Terry Sumner Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 (edited) Well I decided to tackle the Lindberg 61 Chevy Impala for my 24 hour build. Here is my inspiration and what I'm shooting for. This color is Dupont Prowler Orange Pearl and being unable to obtain a small amount of that I'm going with Cobracolors Kandy Tangerine over a silver base... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki I'll be using this kit: http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki I'm going to use the wheels and tires from this kit: http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And here they are! I know they're not exact but close enough. And I'm not going to try to replicate the car...just go towards the overall look of that car. http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And here are the parts ready to go! I know we're not supposed to cut parts off the trees yet but I already had these parts cut off a long time ago but never built the car. Disregard those 4 tires there...they're not being used. http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki Edited February 3, 2013 by Terry Sumner
Terry Sumner Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 Aaaaand we're off! First a mockup to see how it looks. I'm not usually a fan of the big wheels/rubber band tires look but I do like these. Probably because the tires do have some sidewall to them! Time to pull all the tape off the suspension components and get to painting this thing! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki
Custom Mike Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Are you going for the same paint scheme...it does look perfect for the '61!
Rob McKee Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Nice choice of a build. The wheels are perfect for it. Looking forward to seeing more.
hvymtl Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 good looking so far , Nice choice on colors and wheels MIchael
Jantrix Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Looks like a great project, but I'd never even attempt at 24 hour build. Good luck with this.
Snakebite Customs Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Im also in this 24hr build and Im doing a 69 Hurst Olds!! Looks good so far Terry
Terry Sumner Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 I'm gonna try my best at doing the paint just like the one in my inspiration photo. We'll see! LOL
Modlbldr Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 What kit are the tires from- since you said to disregard the tires. The ones in the mock up are the ones I'm interested in. Later-
Terry Sumner Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 Tom those wheels and tires that I'm NOT using are from the Revell 32 Ford 3 window kit. One thing about silver paint...it's a great tool to show you the error of your ways! In other words...I gotta fix some errors in my bodywork! LOL I attempted to fill in the area where the front fender accent trim pieces are supposed to go and it's not filled enough! That's ok...I'll fix it with some medium thick superglue and some zip kicker! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And I totally missed the mold lines at the rear quarters! Duhhhh! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki
Elliot949 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I will check in in the morning to see how it is going... you really have my attention on this one... Try to get it down in the weeds...
Terry Sumner Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Got the orange applied. Letting that harden as much as I can in the dehydrator before I tape it off and spray the black. When I shoot the clear I'm going to chance it and put some pearl powder in it! Can't really go any lower without MAJOR mods...and not enough time for that. I have it as low as I can get it now. I removed the stub axle from the front kingpins, drilled new holes and glued in some .095 OD aluminum tubing. The hubs from the wheels off the 62 kit have these little .062 steel stub axles. I changed the location from the middle of the kingpin to as near the top as I dared... And in the rear, the tires are already up against the top of the inner wheel well. Which is something I really dislike because if the car were real there would be no room for any suspension travel at all. Luckily this is just a model! Bt it's sitting pretty low and nice and level anyways... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki Here's a closeup of the relocated axle location. It used to be in the middle... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki Here's what I mean about the rear tire right up against the wheel well....without making the wheel well bigger I just can't go any lower! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And here's the front spindle with the modified axle near the top of the kingpin.... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki
Custom Mike Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Great color, and the ride height looks good for the time allowed! Now get back to it, you're running out of time!
AUGIEDOGGIE Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) cant wait to see more its a great color , keep the great work terry!! Edited January 27, 2013 by AUGIEDOGGIE
Terry Sumner Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 12 hours! Halfway through but I don't know if I'm halfway on the model yet! Got the black roof and side panel trim painted. I used flat black because it goes on much easier and dries faster. And I'm gonna clear coat the whole thing anyway. I dooubt if I will have time to add the foil but we'll see in a few hours... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki Basics of the engine are done..... Custom Mike Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Yeah, age sucks, but the model is looking good, I hope you can get the foil work done in time, it'll really set this baby off!
Terry Sumner Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 That's it for tonight....I'm saying Uncle. It's supposed to be fun and it's not when you're sitting here in pain. And right now my lower back is screaming at me to go lay down. Almost 14 hours straight here at the bench! Sleep for a while then try to get back at it. Thanks for the support guys!
crazyrichard Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 crazy still looking good so far even with you having to cut corners time wise and about the back comment , well yesterday i was building all day and i also got pain in my back .. we all get it as we get older
rmvw guy Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Nice progress! I can tell this takes a lot of planning.
OldTimer50707 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Fantastic. Really like that paint color. I think the way you have the suspension set up is perfect. Now since I'm recently back into building when you say a 24 hour build do you sleep at all? I'm old an I would need my beauty sleep and in my case a whole lot.

Last year I did stay up all night and work straight through. That's the aim of this event. But in a lot of cases there are groups of guys (and girls) who get together at one persons house and build as a group. They have TV on, the 24 hours of Daytona, food, beverages, etc. I was on my own at home so I took a break around 2 AM.
