ridinframe Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I'm building this 49 merc and I want to detail the engine a little more but can't seem to find out what kind of engine this thing has?? Would anyone happen to know???
Chuck Most Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 It's an early Cadillac- not sure exactly what year it is supposed to represent, but the first-gen postwar Cadillac OHV V8 was made from 1949 to 1962.
azers Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 The 1st gen post war caddy v8 started out as a 331 v8 in 1949 and ended up a 390 v8 by 62. Carburation in stock form ranged from a two barrel to a single 4 barrel the eldorado versions ran twin 4 barrels and tripower. There was also a lot of aftermarket speed equipment made for these engines as well. The other hot engine was the olds engine.
Greg Myers Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 (edited) here's one in a Cad-Allard sports car from the '50's Edited March 23, 2013 by Greg Myers
blunc Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 for anyone not familiar with the carbs on the Allard, those are 2 Rochester 2bbl carbs, very common on GM cars/trucks from the 50's thru the late 70's
Greg Myers Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) the red one's out of a boat, they used these beast in just about anything you can think of. Edited March 25, 2013 by Greg Myers
Greg Myers Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Another Allard engine, this time with four British S.U. carbs
Greg Myers Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 and a little bit of history can be found here : http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=12108
Brett Barrow Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 It's a Caddy, like the others have said, I believe it's meant to represent the late '50's factory tri-power setup (3 2bbl Rochesters), at least that's what it looks like to me. Track down a Revell Parts Pack Caddy and you've got some cooler (IMHO) valve covers and more intake options.
Brett Barrow Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 (edited) "Laid-over" Strombergs from 53 Studebakers. Carter made a very similar laid-over carb for the 50 Olds as a replacement for the Rochester AA. If I didn't recognize the 1:1 this pic comes from I would have said they're Carters. Ace-Garageguy Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 (edited) ...... Track down a Revell Parts Pack Caddy and you've got some cooler (IMHO) valve covers and more intake options. Excellent advice. Lots cheap on repay. Mis-labeled as a 354 though. Edited March 26, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy
