m408 Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 I posted this in the "general" section with lots of views but no reponses. Maybe better luck here? I have a single use 35mm camera, and am not terribly skilled on my PC. Can anyone tell me step by step how to post some pics?
Zoom Zoom Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 Honestly, if you've got a disposable 35mm camera model pictures aren't going to be terribly good. Cheap digital cameras, such as camera phones and webcams are also pretty bad. Lousy pictures (fuzzy, out of focus, poor lighting) of models don't get much of any interest on forums. You'll have to take the film to be processed, get them to put the photos on a CD, or scan the photos, then upload them to a photo host where you then use the photo URL (the address) to link to photos. I think you can use the host provided here, but I don't know how, as I use another one (Fotki). Gregg can tell you how to upload your photos here. A decent digital camera with a decent lens w/Macro is the best way to share photos. If you go to the trouble I mentioned above and your pictures aren't clear, you won't be doing yourself or viewers much good. Model pictures need to be sharp and in focus, single use 35mm cameras are for taking people or scenery shots, not closeups of models. You may try to borrow a digital camera to try out beforehand, it will be a lot less hassle than using a 35mm camera, but even then there's a learning curve.
MrObsessive Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 Echoing what Bob said, I think great photos go a real long way into what type if any responses one will get. I've seen pics of what looks to be really nice models, only to have the pics fuzzy and dark as to not be viewable. So as it's said "Practice makes perfect"! Sometimes I've had to reshoot model pics several times with my digicam to get them "just right".............not to mention running them through my Paint Shop Pro software to get the lighting touched up a bit. My camera is a Olympus D-540 Zoom I bought back in '04..............one of the best "modeling tools" I've bought so far! It's just a 3.2 megapixel type so an upgrade down the road is probably in order compared to the turbocharged stuff out there now! Closeups are great though and it's fairly simple to use.
dub Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Not to hijack the thread but, it is on topic... My question is where do I find the URL on my fotki site to type in the "insert image" box? I am not very computer literate either, so I don't have a clue where to look. I know I have everything I need to do it but I'm stuck. I'm not getting frustrated yet but I have many pics I'm accumulating and don't know how to show them off. Maybe a tutorial for all us 'NOOBZ' would be a good idea. I know not all of the new folks popping up here are not new to the internet but I surely can't be the only one who is! Thank you in advance for any help offered!
Zoom Zoom Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Click on a picture in your Fotki. If it's a premium (paid) account, you click the button below the photo that says "share photo". Then you highlight & copy the URL under the "Image URL for use on other sites:" line. Paste that with the link here, and it should show up. If you have a free account, you can't link photos. You can link to the page with photos, but the photos won't show up here.
dub Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 No wonder! Boy, how simple is that! Thank you Bob, I truly appreciate it. I will have to upgrade the account to a premium one.
Jairus Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Someone here (Billy Kingsley?) posted a nice tutorial on adding pictures to your post. I have searched and cannot seem to find it. I THOUGHT I had pinned it at the top of the general section.... but not there either. Anyone else know where to find it?

Not only that, but there's really no easy how-to for people who want to use the MCM gallery to host their photos and link to them. I thought that was also a pinned subject, but I couldn't find it either.
Harry P. Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 No wonder! Boy, how simple is that! Thank you Bob, I truly appreciate it. I will have to upgrade the account to a premium one. Try photobucket instead. Easy, user-friendly, and free

I thought that was also a pinned subject, but I couldn't find it either. I actually found that. It was about 6 pages in on the general thread. I still didn't know how to find the URL but maybe I just didn't know where to look.

dub Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Try photobucket instead. Easy, user-friendly, and free Thanks Harry! I am actually using the two week trial on the fotki site, but now I know where to go. Good thing I only uploaded six pics to my free fotki account!
MrObsessive Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Just to add a tidbit about Fotki................I used to right click on the photo, copy and paste the properties and the pic would show up here. But Fotki has changed their method of hosting pics to where you almost have to use the "Share Photo" URL. Otherwise the pics will disappear after so long. Guess they're feelin' the budget crunch too because of bandwidth costs. I used to be able to post the full size pics (1600 pixel) but they too will disappear after a while.
MrObsessive Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Yeah, I actually have a Photobucket account...........but one of the reasons I hang on to Fotki, is I like to add comments about each of the photos I post there. Especially when it comes to WIP stuff I post here. If Fokti keeps up the shenanigans about hosting pics come next year when it comes time to renew......................they'll be history.
m408 Posted September 28, 2007 Author Posted September 28, 2007 Thanks for the help gang. Per previous posts, I'm attempting my first diorama. Ran out of shelve space for my cars so I decided to remove a wine rack from a spot in my living room and convert it into a used car lot. Having never done anything like that before, I asked for help and ideas on the diorama forum. Loads of great responses on every question I asked. Thanks again to all for sharing your knowledge. Now some of my mentors are asking for progress pics. Since my car building skills are fair at best (detailing for me is adding plug wires), wont be posting any of them. All shots will be from at least 3' so my throw away 35mm should work. Maybe as my skills improve, I will be able to justify a good camera, but not now. Would rather spend my money on kits.
