rigbuilder Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I am building a 1950 Chevy 3100. I am planning on ditching the stock suspension front and rear. I have a Monte Carlo NASCAR front suspension I plan to manipulate to fit for my steers. I want to make a four link for the back. Should I use the NASCAR suspension and just cut and shrink and manipulate it to fit or would it be easier to scratch build one. I am also using the V8 from the same kit with parts box headers valve covers and carb. I really need help figuring out the rear suspension. Maybe someone can help with a four link diagram. Thank you, Rig.
1930fordpickup Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 The rear suspension in NASCAR is based from a Chevy truck. Could you just use the frame from the car or is the wheel base way off?
Edsel-Dan Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 The rear suspension on those is a little newer than the 1950. It is from the 60's trucks., and is not really 4 link is it?
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I would suggest just using the Nascar-style 'truck-arm' rear suspension. It would be perfectly fine in 1:1, unless you wanted to build something that handled like a sports car. It adapts easily to a variety of chassis installations, and is a reinforced Ford 9" to boot. It's MUCH easier than fabbing a 4-link, and again, would work great in full scale. To adapt it to a '34 Ford frame, I only had to narrow the forward crossmember, like so... Adapting it to a '64 Mopar chassis was a little more work, requiring shortening the arms and fabbing spring pockets...
Randy D Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Hi Jeremy, I have a diogram here....http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=47809&page=2 Hope this helps, Randy
rigbuilder Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 Thank you everyone for responding to my inquiry. Unfortunately I do not have the space to scratchbuild something that elaborate as I am building this pickup in the cab of an 18 wheeler. I have a very small box with limited supplies and two kits. But I really appreciate the plans provided. I am fixen to cu and manipulate the NASCAR suspension for the truck. I will attempt to post pics once done. Thanks again y'all.
rigbuilder Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 Rear suspension cut and manipulated to fit. Now I need to figure out the front. Thanks for lookin y'all.
rigbuilder Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 A minor update on this build. Things are going slow as I am building this truck in the cab of an 18 wheeler. Is there a way to change the title of this thread to something more fitting?
rigbuilder Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 Sorry for the duplicate pic. I thought I posted pics of both sides.
cahilj Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Cool idea and nice execution. Especially while building on the road! You should be able to go to your very 1st post in this thread, click the edit button and change the title.
