BubbaJoe Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 (edited) this is my second build which is a 56 ford pick up.after reading the tutorials on wiring a distibutor cap i just had to try this. i didn't have the supplies on hand to build one so i decided to try and drill out the stock piece.this is my first attempt at doing this .any and all feed back would be greatly appreciated.i'm a big boy and can take critisims .the object is to get better at this..so let me have it Edited May 4, 2013 by BubbaJoe
1972coronet Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Looks like a nice , cleanly-built engine to me -- however , I don't believe that Ford's Y-Block or FE or MEL engine series ignition wires are routed under the exhaust manifolds (a la big block Chrysler) . Looks super otherwise !
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 (edited) ..... I don't believe that Ford's Y-Block or FE or MEL engine series ignition wires are routed under the exhaust manifolds... Looks super otherwise ! Actually, they ARE often routed under the manifolds on the Y-block. BUT, you might check your plug spacing. You have one wire between the center exhaust ports, which isn't quite right. The perspective and camera angle throw this photo off a little, but the plug locations are under and JUST TO THE SIDE of each exhaust port. Edited May 4, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy
BubbaJoe Posted May 4, 2013 Author Posted May 4, 2013 thanks... i noticed my spacing was off as soon as i driled them out.they are bit crooked as well..i had to use a 14 w dewalt to drill them and the bit drifted.i should have tapped the hole with a push pin or something..next time... .i really need to pick up a pin vice. i scrapped an old mouse for the wire(good tip BTW) i used staples to strap the wires down.i'm fairly pleasded with the results but wanted to hear what the group thought ...very encouraging and i appreciate the comments.
Chillyb1 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I think the wires look out of scale. To my eyes they appear too large.
sak Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Those wire inside mouse cable is what I use for battery cables. Buy a roll of "wire wrapping wire" for sparkplug wire.
Erik Smith Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Clean construction. The wires are too thick, but I have seen worse...and most models have out of scale spark plug wires, f you compare to a 1:1. They are visible, obviously, but not nearly as prominent as portrayed on many models (see Bill's post for pictures). I DO like the fact the distributor isn't a glue mess and the looms holding the wires together.

Eshaver Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 thanks for the tip..can i get the wire at radio shack? BY ALL MEANS YOU CAN! I bought a series of spools that the wire is used to re build transformers . The Gold wire is the coarsest , followed by Red , then a Green. This wire can take acrylic paint to color it in another color . Generally, I'll use the Green wire colored Black for spark plugs , Red for Battery cables and the Gold for fuel and Brake lines .
1972coronet Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Actually, they ARE often routed under the manifolds on the Y-block. I stand corrected . I never noticed that the Y-Blocks' ignition wires were routed that way . Thanks for the accompanying photos , too .
Guest Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Looks good, tho a bit large. Jeff, where did you get that?
Kaleb Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 For things you had on hand, it looks great. Practice makes it better, now for the future you have options in wiring, you can also the same wire under another name on the Internet, or on ebay called kynar wire.
blunc Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I was talking this stuff. One roll should last a lifetime. this stuff rocks, and you can get it in colors other than black and it comes in several gage sizes. places like Fry's Electronics or Microcenter also carry these kinds of products for electronics techs/enthusiasts that do repars/mods. it can also be ordered from online sources like Mouser and Digikey but there's nothing like being able to see it and decide what works best for your detailing. alternatively, you can disassemble old electric motors/alternators/generators (even electric fans) to get various sizes of wire for free is you have dead electrics laying around. dead floppy or dvd drives have a ton of parts that can be used if you don't mind taking them apart.
gwolf Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Looks great, man. WAY better than my recent, first attempt at wiring.
