We've been asked to sell this old bed for a relative. She bought it second hand in Seattle, probably in the 1960s. It's painted a blue/turquoise color and has floral designs on the headboard and footboard. A shipping label from Stickley Bros. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is tacked on the inside of one of the side rails. It looks like the paint is original, and while worn a bit in spots (mostly on edges) I'd say it is in pretty good condition. I've tried google but haven't had much luck. Anybody have any idea how old it might be? What Stickley called this style? What it might be worth?

I can't answer your questions specifically, but from watching many episodes of "Antiques Roadshow," I can tell you that Stickley furniture, especially with the original finish, is highly collectible... and depending on the specific piece, can be very valuable.

Do not sell that bed until you know what it might be worth!

Stickley usually built what they call "Arts & Crafts" style, followed by others including Frank Lloyd Wright (his work was similar, but called "Prairie Style"). Should be very collectible, but don't even think about rpainting it or touching up anything.

You have good photos. Find a knowledgeable antiques dealer in your area and try to get an appraisal. Don't settle for just one. Many dealers don't know a lot, and don't bother to research. Some others will try to lowball you to make a fat profit when they resell.

Here's a dealer who offers appraisal services on Stickley pieces...http://www.ssolomon.com/

Here's a bunch of Arts& Crafts pieces, as Skip mentioned. http://www.webteek.com/search.php?sid=1&keywords=Furniture&keySub=Stickley&skp=0

Stickley did make a line of colonial-style furniture in the 1920s and '30s, too.

It's not as valuable as the Craftsman/Mission pieces, but it's still well thought of and well-made. I don't know if that decoration as it is is original, though.

I would definitely have a Stickley furniture specialist examine it, if only even the photos.

Everybody, thanks for all the advice. I was able to contact someone at the Stickley Museum who was able to help with some information. He said the style is called "Quaint American" and the bed was made in the 1925-1935 era. He thinks the finish is original. He said there isn't much of a collector market and value is "discretionary." Now we need to find somebody local to look at it.
