DrewCfromSC Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Hello, trying my first pre wired distributor in my big black chevy engine. Got the distributor drilled into my block now the wires need to be drilled into the heads correct? What size drill bit works best? #72? Thanks! Drew C.
Guest G Holding Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 it will work if you push the boots flush to the head, or go down a few sizes to cover the boot
Blown03SVT Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Not fully sure what the gauge of the spark wire is that you are using to tell you. A simple caliper from Harbor Freight changed my life.
DrewCfromSC Posted June 1, 2013 Author Posted June 1, 2013 Im using detail masters prewired distributor kit. I don't see any plug boots in this one? I did pull out my caliper and that's a great idea was well! Why didn't I think of that myself? Thanks everyone. Drew C.
ScaleDale Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 I bought one of these and could wire an engine with cat hair if I wanted to.http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Drill-0-013--0-079-0-4-2mm/dp/B001IC9CXK/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1370122677&sr=8-5&keywords=micro+drill+bit+setDale

What if it won't stretch ? How do you make the hair longer? Do you have a list of all kinds of cats and how long their hair is ?
bill_rules Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 My cat's hair is too short. Then use the whiskers, they are much longer

ScaleDale Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Bill get a "hair stretcher".....should be listed next to the "hair splitter"......past the "hair puller" I thought every scratch builder had at least one good hair puller. I have several and use them all the time. Dale
Pete J. Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 I thought every scratch builder had at least one good hair puller. I have several and use them all the time. Dale If you are pulling hair off a cat, Scratch builder would be most appropriate. Or would that be scratched builder?
Danno Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Hey, Here's a tip that does not involve torturing or harvesting cats. I have a drill set that comes with a storage globe. Whenever I need to drill a hole for a rod or a wire, including scale spark plug wiring with or without boots, I use the storage rack's holes as a size guage. I just slip the wire I'm using into holes (one at a time) until I find the size that allows the wire to slide in easily without binding, then I use that drill bit or the next size larger to make the holes. Remember one thing: It's important to use a bit that makes the holes large enough to allow for your adhesive! The thicker your glue, the larger the hole you need.

Pete J. Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 All kidding aside it doesn't sound like you have a good set of wire gage drill bits. They can be had for as little or much as you want to pay for them. Here is a good source for them. http://www.ottofrei.com/Cobalt-High-Speed-Steel-and-Tungsten-Vanadium-Twist-Drills/ They have always given me good service. Last bit set I bought from them was a set with 10 of each set. I use the heck out of them and I can guarantee you that if you use the really small ones you will break your last one at a critical juncture in the build and it will frustrate the heck out of it. There are a lot to choose from and I will warn you, this is a nasty catalogue to browse. It is amazing how closely tools for our hobby coincide with jewelry making.
DrewCfromSC Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 great info from you all as well as a few laughs! Thanks im going back to work tomorrow from vacation and will see if any of my drill bit suppliers has a small set like these that I can order. Drew C.
