philo426 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 The other day I was perusing the HAMB and the running thread "Vintage shots from days gone by".I came across a photo of a '32 Caddy that had been converted into a tow truck.i liked it and since I had the Monogram '32 Caddy dual cowl Phaeton i decided to make the conversion. It will not be an exact repo of the photo but close.I have rescribed the front door and have begun to rough in the truck portion.
codie27 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Looks like you're off to a good start. Ill be watching this one for sure
Tom Geiger Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Cool. A lot of those big old classics made their way to truckdom since they were huge, powerful and essentially built on a truck chassis to start with. I have a '27 Lincoln on it's way to having a huge wood truck body on the back.
Dr. Cranky Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Rare subject, looking forward to seeing more progress.
Eshaver Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Great idea and a project that is totally overlooked !
philo426 Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 Don't forget that with the advent of WWll and the implementation of gas rationing, many owners of fine cars had them converted to trucks(especially farm trucks) so that the owners could continue to drive them. There is at least one documented case of the owner of a Dusenberg who had it converted to a stake bed flat bed for that purpose. He had the coach builders save the older body so that it could be reconverted after the war.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Very interesting project. The big ol' Cad is perfect for that role. Here's a pic of Howard Hughes Duesenberg converted to an aircraft support truck... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=65803&hl=%2Bhoward+%2Bhughes+%2Bduesenberg
philo426 Posted July 23, 2013 Author Posted July 23, 2013 I decided to use real wood for the deck platform. Not bad!
philo426 Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 Made the boom out of brass tube and a couple of old slot car wheels.Pretty massive!
philo426 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Despite the fact that the fenders are molded in black,I still primered and painted them as well as the roof.
philo426 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 I painted the body and hood Tamiya Gold Leaf. The plan is to use vinyl letters and numbers as negative masks which will create the lettering after the body is painted black and the stickers peeled off.
slusher Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Awsume project. Nice work on the wood bed and boom...
philo426 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 (edited) Thanks! I had some wood planks left over from a model ship project! Edited July 26, 2013 by philo426
Tom Geiger Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I'm enjoying this project. You are tempting me to pull my old '28 Lincoln truck project down from the shelf!
philo426 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Might be fun!is that the one with the optional windshield with the bullet holes?

philo426 Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Added the vinyl stickers prior to painting.
Eshaver Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Now you are going to HAVE to do a "Period " service station with "Curb pumps !
philo426 Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Thanks! One project at a time if you please!
