slantasaurus Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Well, I got a charge out of it... At least the discussion has been positive.
ScaleDale Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 ^^^ Yes. I hate those polarizing threads where everyone gets all juiced up and wired. Dale
Harry P. Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 Yeah, I'm glad this topic didn't get short-circuited by someone blowing a fuse...
ScaleDale Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 There seems to be more resistance to that than some other forums on the Net. dale

DrKerry Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Here's the MSD diagram. One thing to note, all of the magnetos that have the external coil i think have to have a 12v source. This would be in the 70's on to todays vehicles. The diagram provided is for a MSD single mag set up but they are the same, dual or single mag don't matter. It's been the same since the early 70's when Cirello used to convert Vertex Magnetos from internal coil to external coil. (maybe even earlier than that but I think Cirello came about in the early 70's.) I understand where your coming from on this. I've never seen a top fuel of any sort with a battery kill switch on the back of them. NHRA mandates battery disconnects on most cars, I would suspect they surely would on a 4 second pavement burner like top fuel.
ScaleDale Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 ^^^ Once the car is fired, it runs off the magnetos, which provide up to 44 amps each. There are two means of shutting the car down, one manual and the other automated. These quotes are from the Top Fuel section of the revised 2013 rule book but would apply to FC as well. The auto shutdown is triggered by any engine malfunction such as a supercharger pop and kills the engine and deploys the parachutes. Courtney Force popped a blower 60 feet out and both of her chutes fell to the track. It looked like the car puked. Given that Team Force can absorb the $$$$ it took to fix, it was funny. IGNITION SWITCH “Each car in competition must have a positive on/off switch, capable of de-energizing the entire ignition system, in good working order, located within easy reach of the driver.” SHUTOFF DEVICE “Properly installed and operational Electrimotion Top Fuel Safety Shutoff Controller Kit (part number SB001TF or SB002TF) and Electrimotion Shutoff Receiver (part number RF001) mandatory. The Electrimotion Top Fuel Safety Shutoff Controller Kit must be installed per the manufacturer’s instructions. Modification of or tampering with the Electrimotion Top Fuel Safety Shutoff Controller Section 18, page 25 Top Fuel Dragster Kit prohibited. The activation of the system override switch by any means other than parachute deployment is prohibited.” Dale
DrKerry Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 That's what I've been thinking Dale. I've never seen a battery on board a top fueler and was pretty sure the cars on board electrics ran off the mags. Thus when they hit the starter at the line the car doesn't fire right away. It takes a few cranks and then it pops off. Gotta spin the mags to get the juice to fire, along with other things. On a positive thought..............
AZ Boy Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 The model that had Harry originally questioning the use of a battery in a funnycar was based on the Mickey Thompson titanium Pinto from the 1970-71 seasons. If you do a Google image search for it, you'll see the battery on the real thing.
ScaleDale Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 ^^^ At one of the televised National events a crew guy was walking the line with a fanny pack/diaper bag kinda thing with wires hanging out of it. All the announcers could get from him was that it helped start the car. A TF rig, I think. Makes sense to power up the oil and fuel systems before cranking one of these things. AZ Boy: We know we've digressed. If you go back to about post three, you can buy the car (or one like it) in the OP off Racing Junk.com. $25,000. Dale
