jamie Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Call me Santa!!! And here's my other WIP... A 1970 Formula 400 which is being built for a close friend of the family. She is currently getting her Formula overhauled, so I thought this would be a great time to build a kit for her as well. Her father, who passed away many years ago, was a model builder as well. He had built a Formula 4oo about 25 years ago or so, using the old MPC kit. I was originally going to restore the MPC kit that her Dad built, but take a look at the pictures and you'll realize why I decided to buy the Revell kit instead. The only thing I used from that kit was the hood, being that the only option in the Revell kit was the shaker hood. I was using the dual intake hood. The fun part was getting the shaker hood cut out and replacing it with the dual intake hood. Keep in mind, the old kit was 1:25, while the new one is 1:24. But, thankfully, it wasn't that much of a problem like I thought it was going to be. Here the cut out piece is on top of the Revell hood. Here's some shots of the new hood on the car: I still have some smoothing to do, but it's going good so far... Up next is the interior and chassis... Thanks for looking!
jamie Posted November 13, 2007 Author Posted November 13, 2007 OK, next up is the chassis, body and interior.. The chassis was easy..I just painted it good 'ol Home Depot flat black and weathered some silver paint on it. Nothing crazy. The exhaust is painted with silver bottle paint from Model Master. I've primered the body and attached the side mirrors by pinning them. I don't think there was any way of getting those mirrors to stay on there by just glueing them! And I've just finshed the interior. Again, nothing crazy. Just trying to do some good brush painting... I'll be updating as soon as I get something done! Maybe the engine.........oooooh....LOL. Again, thanks for looking!
crispy Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Jaime, Please tell me you didn't cut up that MPC hood?? Reliable Resin makes that piece. I would have left the original Formula alone, sentimentally speaking. Aside from that, it looks great. Nice work and the hood transitioned well into the shaker hood. Chris

Chris Funny you should say that..... I LITERALLY found out 2 days AFTER I cut the hood that Reliable Resins offers that hood. I wanted to punch myself in the face, but what's done is done.....BTW, I checked with my neighbor to see if it was alright that I took her MPC apart. She had no problem with it. But yes, after I found that out, I felt retarded to say the least....

Anyway, keep up the work and post your progress. I'm a die hard Trans Am/Pontiac fan. Chris
LVZ2881 Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 looking good!! you should get that hood to someone to resin cast it, I think it would sell pretty good.
Gregg1LE Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Great progress on the kit ! The early 2nd gen Formula is one of my favorite cars and you are doing it justice....outstanding work on the hood !
fatherdevine Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Jaime, that is an awesome job! Keep up the good work!
jamie Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 Thanks for the compliments guys! If there's anything that looks off or whatever, I'm pretty good with critisism.... I think I'll be doing more engine work tonight...... Oh, and Tony, I'm from North Plainfield, NJ, if that helps...LOL!
crispy Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Jamie--On your hood conversion, is that ram air hood you made designed for the New Revell Motor City kit? If so, take LVZ2881 advice and get someone to copy that in resin. You'd surely make a few bucks off of that. The MPC ones that Reliable Resin does wont work with the Revell kit, I mean they would but you would have some extra work. Since you did all of that work you may want to see if it could be cast. Anyway the progress looks great. Keep it up. Chris

crispy Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Yeah, it's for the 1:24th scale........How would one go about doing that? I would contact Don at Reliable Resin and see if it would be something he would be interested in doing for you. He posts here on occasion, but he's a builder first before a internet chatter. Marc Nellis could get you in contact with him as well. Check the resin section of the site and see if he's been on lately or you can find his contact info through the site. He's a really nice guy but kind of brash but that's just how he his. I'm not sure how he works out the details but go the routes I mentioned. Another person to talk to would be Darin Bastedo. He mastered a few items that Don creates now. It will consist of you sending your hood to him though. You'll have to work out the details with him. But if you do this let us know as I will buy one or two from you. Chris
LVZ2881 Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 definitely contact either Marc or Darin, they would be able to help you out.. and yes, please do, I'd be in for 1 atleast, maybe 2....
jamie Posted November 15, 2007 Author Posted November 15, 2007 Thanks guys! Very interesting...... The only drawback I see is the fact that it's not a build for me, so I need to know what the turnaround time would be for something like that. If it takes too long, I'm not sure I could do it. But if it's not too bad, say a week or two, I might be able to make that happen.....
JAFFA Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Nice to make some money from buliding , anyways what wheels ya gonna go for?
jamie Posted November 15, 2007 Author Posted November 15, 2007 Basically, this is the exact car I'm building. I found this one off the web a la Google, but the lady's 400 looks exactly like this, except she has the aero kit in the front. Everything else is to the T...
DarylH Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 Wow........it's my all-time favorite Firebird! If that hood gets cast I'll do multiples Great project Jamie
Jairus Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 That picture reminds me of the Pilot for the 70's TV show "Rockford".
Jeff Johnston Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 I really want to do that style, and I'd love to see someone cast that hood in Resin.....I really hope someone agrees to cast that for you. If I had all of the "parts", I'd do the hood and have it cast. Really nice work on that.
