Kennyboy Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) Ok guys, I don't usually build in the vintage category but my current custom build on the 1952 Ferrari 340 Mexico Berlinetta tribute car needs a proper roof. I am getting stuck on what I should use that has the right look to it. I can give some different shots of the 1:1 I am working from to help you but I don't have the Vintage knowhow to decipher which roof from which car. Plus, my stash is not that big so I don't have a lot of parts. I am just guessing at this point and when you piss into the wind you get wet feet. I need the roof for the next step which will be tying up all the beltline body work so I am getting close to being at a standstill so this is quite important (hence the reason I am reaching out for help.) Oh, Would also like to add that this WILL be available as a resin body from Jimmy F. if I ever get it done and to him. So it could benefit us all! Thanks for any suggestions and any and all help acquired! Pics for reference: Edited October 23, 2013 by Kennyboy
2000-cvpi Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Just at a glance a 911 Porsche or similar roof would have almost the same profile.
Kennyboy Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Just at a glance a 911 Porsche or similar roof would have almost the same profile. That is what I initially thought myself.....I had an old 911 in the parts bin so I cut the roof off it and put it on the top of the car, it is too long and the roof profile slants backward too much. Was going to section out the roof to shorten but then you create a circular top to it which would open a new can of worms. I keep looking at the 50 Oldsmobile and/or 51 Chevy roof because it has to have a little height to it. The roof I have right now is a little too short heightwise but the length is good.....it is just a homologation of several different pieces (57 T-bird backhalf, 57 Chevy center-to-windshield, and VW Beetle sides.) Thank you for the reply Corey!

Ace-Garageguy Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 The rather upright A-pillars and the amount of windshield wrap-around suggest to me the old Aurora Aston Martin kit (repopped by Monogram / Revell)...but... ...it's WAY too narrow (going by the rear shot of the 1:1) which would necessitate a section added (and a wider windshield, which would also be skill-taxing) and it's probably a bit too long...so you'd have to section it lengthwise. You'd also have to custom-build C-pillars.
cobraman Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 The front windshield and front side windows remind me of the rear roof section of something but I cant place it. Mini ? I will have to give it more thought. BTW thats a cool body.
Greg Myers Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Those pictures look squished. Wheels kinda tall and narrow Whole thing fat and chunky ? Or is it just me ?

Art Anderson Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 From my experiences doing conversions which involved reworking a roof: Chances are not likely that you will find exactly the roof you need in any existing kit--unmodified that is. You might look at say, the Tamiya VW Karmann Ghia, of course the Aurora or (pretty rare) MPC/Airfix Aston Martin DB-5 (Doyusha--??-- made this body style A-M as well). Whosever roof you wind up with as a starting point probably is best considered as a source for the curves at front, sides and rear--and more than likely the roof panel itself will have to be widened, perhaps stretched in length front-to-back as well. But, at least, these two kits may well have some of the basic shapes you are needing. Art

randx0 Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 How about the roof from the Lindberg Triumph GT 6?
Kennyboy Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 This is the stage I was at the other day..........so it is well under way. In fact, the side vents and the side body lines are almost done now. See what I mean by the roof??

Ace-Garageguy Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 What you've got is already closer than any of the suggested other donor roofs would be as starting points (including the one I suggested). If you can re-work your A-pillars to allow for more windshield wrap at the front of the roof, and drop the rear of the roof panel slightly to match the profile shot...probably re-working your C-pillars, I think you'll be pretty close.
Kennyboy Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice! I am probably going to use the roof I already have, now that I have found there is no roof out there that is just going to be a "cut off and glue on". Was trying to avoid going that route because it will be just like the making of the body......I am going to have cut and splice in "A" pillars and probably "C" pillars as well and then fill and sand. Also, I have the wing on the way for the rear below the back window which will help a lot with the "C" pillar region.
