crazyrichard Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 well there was not really paint on the body but aluminium zinc spray , actually a metal like coat .. because i wanted it stripped to bare styrene and didnt have anything to put the body in ... and also think the zincspray would not come of that easy .. eevn thinner only got like a micrometer layer of and nothing else happened .... i smoothened the body ...... that idea was playing in my mind but i did not have the nerve for it , afraid i would ruin the lines ... but then when filing and sanding the zinkspray of .. i thought it would be easy now to clean the bodylines and flatten the styrene completly .. so i did it .. and after that sanded it and with a file made all the corners and lines rounder ... in the end i think it fits the racer theme , like streamline ... and fits with the new nose .. now dont get me wrong i like the ford body better with all those raised lines .. but sometimes going outside the box and trying new stuff is cool too now i am in doubt if i will fill the speedholes again and close them up
crazyrichard Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 well decided to start with a rough roof set up .. as low as i could
Modlbldr Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Nice work so far. I've been following this and I like where you have taken it. I really like your choice of wheels for it. They have the old time racer look to them. For the mesh on the front brake scoops they make metal mesh reusable coffee filters that you could cut up. Later-
crazyrichard Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 thnx and thnx for the coffe filter idea !! i will take a loo at those
bryan_m Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) lookin good! heres the willys axle i did. i should get back to work on it! i finished it up last week, ill start a thread on it, dont wanna hijack your topic. keep up the good work cheers bryan Edited January 18, 2014 by bryan_m
crazyrichard Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 thnx and nice axle .. will be watching for the build thread
crazyrichard Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 closed up the engine compartment with thicker round plates also plastic welded the speedholes ..... the side panels , i had to get the hairpins loose from the chassis , these will sit firther back and i will make new ones or alter these added tiny mesh on the brake air scoops , sadly some glue sits in the tiny holes .. but in the end i think after paint and some weathering i can make it look like piled up filth after racing ?
crazyrichard Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 some bondo and started work on the roof
crazyrichard Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 well closed the sides in the roof with round pieces of styrene ... i left thme like this not going to make it level with the rooof , i loved the looks styling wise better vieuw , i think the extra round shape there makes it more interesting now to make side windows , a front window ...
Dinky Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Your on speed again Looks great so far, the closed wheels on the red/white are very cool. Whats the plan for the color? I did not have much time the last two weeks, Today was the fist time on the Roaster. Made some spacers for rear wheels and another radiator mount.
crazyrichard Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 thnx arno , well color not sure in this update i already was thinking about that ... maybe red .. i never did a red one .... just put a good coat of primer on , nice and thick so i can sand out the last imperfections ... it already came out very nice , one mistake i made was to leave a ridge in the rear of the roof , without primer that looked cool now primered and in one coor it looks weird ... need to smoothen that and put some bondo on that , also need a small amount of bondo on the round side things on the roof ... and color wise .. hmm still thinking red .. maybe even the so-calk colorsceme with red and white and the round design .... only if i'm convinced i can mask that off in a nice way though
crazyrichard Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 gave the body a good sandjob when i came home , already really smooth
crazyrichard Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 thnx jonas .. not so cool at the moment i'm affraid so bizarre , i painted it red .. used a spray can i use for small parts and just when it was almost done it sputtered like dots of paint .. i quickly took a cap of the same style can but with clear in it and put it on the red can .. i had runners and splashes .. i was so like grrrrr and this paint can be sprayed real thick i just sprayed it out by building layers .. not the best option but .... but it worked !!!!! then i have like a radiator in the kitchen with a wooden front that opens as a door i always bake my paint for like 5-10 minutes on there and now did the same this was the endresult > ooh and i sprayed those wheels chrome well i was happy just saved the paintjob ... bit thick but .. its was flat and shiney .. so i already thought in a bout 2 days i will mask it and paint it with white like the so-cal racers took the pics above and thought well i put it on the radiator for 5 more minutes and put it in the closet to harden i walk away and hear poink ....uuuh poink i thought .... i walked back and it had fallen behind the radiator and was wedged inbetween the radiator and wall... seriously i was like ggrrrrr this is how it came out of there and squeezing my hand behind the radiator i had to grab the body .. so fingerprints so this means after harding i can sand my ...off grrr i was soo close ... and i cant use that red anymore that can is only sputtering ... so hmmmzzzz
crazyrichard Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 nope .. but i kept my cool haha ... just came home and i already did some sanding .. this paint is hard to sand .. like sand of layers .. but i will succeed !!
squirrel886 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I like where you're going w/ this Richard. Sorry to see the accident, you'll prevail!
Baugher Garage Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Richard this looks amazing! Good eye, brother! Very cool lines!
crazyrichard Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 thnx guys and well .. long story short , in the end i got most off .. sprayed it again and didnt feel happy and stripped the paint with thinner .. now that luckely worked and the plastic is still in tact .. hard to get it smooth again .. the good news is ... i sometimes go to a bog industrial factory .. with the truck .. and they make pigment poweders .. only white pigment .. the whole yard / factory / buildings / road is white .. i noticed if you walk there the stuff gets on everything .. i was thinking today when i was there i buy rust pigment powder and that works great .. hmm building a racer ... salt flats .. white pigment powder .. so i found a jar and asked if they had some for me .. and said what it was for and they have different types .. so he said follow me and gave me what he said would do the trick .. so my idea is to keep it slightly rougher and weather it like salt covered (not to extreme) use the pigment as like salt spray marks and use small dots of bondo to mimick salt residue the cool thing is if it works like i think and i put some powder on a piece of paper and roll the tyres over .. te tyres should have white on .. like they just drove through the salt .. because that stuff just stays on .. when i've been there my trucvk tyres are white and when i use the steamcleaner to wash it off its pretty stuck on the truck .. so on amodelcar it shoudl stay on this is the stuff
crazyrichard Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 pfft got it in primer again and i must say i expected worse .. still needs a good snd job but its saved .....
crazyrichard Posted January 23, 2014 Author Posted January 23, 2014 added a engine , some plating on the chassis .. need to close the pint of the nose at the bottom and sanded the body a bit , needs bondo and sanding .. but its saved
crazyrichard Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 well i'm glad it fell down and i had to start over lol just painted it black and man this looks so much better on the car it will dry up semi matt because it was just painted on the pics , but i used this paint before and when i'm done with details and decals i will spray it with high gloss clear coat and it will shine as much as on these pictures closed the nose like you see on a lot of cars , no grille just streamline nice deep panellines used new hairpins on the front axle these will sit on the body instead of the short ones wich where on the hood .. when painted chrome they will give a great contrast on the black body also have a parachute for the trunk , just dont know what color to paint tthat , maybe matt black on the gloss paint ?
