Tom Geiger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 When people buy me a kit for Christmas or something, they tell me they had a hard time picking a kit out. I have let all my friends and relatives NOT to buy me anything hobby related for presents, pretty much because like said above, I have most everything I want or need, certainly much more than I am entitled to! Also, being inside the hobby, I have better cheaper sources for kits than the local hobby shop. So it bothered me when someone paid full boat retail for a kit I already had. Plus non hobby folks tend to look at models like we're assembling puzzles. They would give me either as complicated a kit as they could find (Bet ya can't build this one!) or I got my share of large scale (Lookit I got you a real biggun!) Overall I'm much happier giving presents than receiving them. I pretty much tell people not to get me presents at all. I'm blessed to have all I need in life. For instance, in my wife's family we had a $25 grab bag on Christmas day. I wound up with a $25 ITunes gift certificate, and I've never even been to that site, nor have any interest. And that's how presents to me usually go. One exception is that my sister and I find each other odd, gag and unusual gifts from time to time. This year she had mentioned a game we played as kids, so I found one on eBay and gave it to her for Christmas.
gtx6970 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 In my stash I probably don't have more than maybe a dozen kits that I don't have multiples of As an example between the various examples of the Lindberg 1964 Dodge I have at least a dozen probably closer to 20
DrKerry Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Same here, I have about 8 39/40 Fords by Revell and/or AMT. As well as the AMT 57 Fords
bpletcher55 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I FIND MY SELF BUYING A LOT OF THE REVEL 32,S AND THE REVEL 29 SEDANS AND TRUCKS ,ALSO THE NEW TWEETY PIE KITS ,
jaydar Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I don't buy multiples of the same kit. I will buy every year of a corvette or mustang and i will buy a convert and hard top of the same car. Joe.
peter31a Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I have multiples of woody kits, The AMT/MPC 29, the Revell 30, the AMT 41 and the Revell 48 and intend to have multiple of the new Merc as well. I also have multiple different Model A and 32 kits.
ToyLvr Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 For many years, I used to buy two (2) or more of every kit that I really wanted to build. I figured that if I goofed-up the original, or encountered deformed or missing parts, I'd always have a backup kit. Because of this, I wound up with a lot of multiples of the same kit. (yes, I know that I could/should open the kits upon purchase and inspect the contents, but I prefer to keep them sealed until I'm ready to build). If everything went ok on the project, I would then sell or trade the extras. These days, since kits have gotten so expensive, I cannot afford to buy multiples. Besides, with resources like this MCM forum, I have a lot better chance of finding replacement parts if I run into trouble on an out-of-production kit. Otherwise, the only kits that I buy multiples of are the JoHan Chrysler Turbine car and anything related to the Chevy Corvair, since I'm crazy about both of these cars. What's the use in having a hobby if you can't obsess about it? ;-)
russosborne Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I've been buying a lot of multiples lately. Mainly ones like the AMT Double Dragster and others that are 2in1 or 3in1 or more, because I want to have the ability to build all the versions of that kit that is shown on the box. Mostly ones that were originally released back when I was a kid and I couldn't even afford one of them at that time. Need to buy them now before they go back to collector prices. And then there are always a few of "hey, I have been wanting that kit" when I see it at a store, only to get it home and realize I had already bought it sometime in the past. OOPS. Done this several times, even with the same kit a couple of times. Some are just to have a backup in case I screw up the first one. And then there are the ones that are just my favorites, like the Badman 55 Chevy, just can't have enough of those. If HL carried this one, that is probably about all I would use the coupon for. Russ
Shardik Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I have 5 or 6 copies of the Revell '67 Chevelle Pro Street. I have no particular fondness for Chevelles, but these kits are excellent sources for a host of pro street parts. I also buy multiple copies of kits that I plan to modify heavily, both for safety spares and because some of my mods require multiple bodies to execute. Then of course there are those kits that are just too cool to make just one.: Revell '48 Ford custom, AMT '50 Chevy pickup, Monogram '36 Ford coupe/convertible... The final category is pure automotive obsession: Every manifestation, iteration, and permutation of the Ford GT40 MkI through MkIV.

Tom Geiger Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 These days, since kits have gotten so expensive, I cannot afford to buy multiples. Ah the good ole days. Back in the early 1990s a certain dealer used to sell kits at our club meetings for $6 each. More than not, I'd grab an empty Ertl 12 kit case, and just fill it. He'd give you a discount for a full case. So I'd buy duplicates, no problem. Sometimes I'd buy almost anything to fill the last two slots in that case! Yea, I don't do that at today's prices!

I buy ALLOT through GMScustoms on ebay.....new issue kits for under 20.00 and he does surplus sales and " 1 at a time " sales and "lucky dog" sales where he lists new kits for like 9.50 - 14.00 I just pre-ordered a few of the new Firestone ford truck kits through him and at the same time scored a revel 59 impala for 9.50, a rat roaster for 11.50 and a few other current kits for 14 including the 70 Cuda. I have a few trusted dealers that I buy everything through, so with prices like that I grab a bunch of kits at once and stock up. Heck he has been listing the new Foose 1/12 Camaro at 39.99 buy it now, when most others are charging 55-60.00 Edited January 12, 2014 by mademan
