Sink Marks

Recommended Posts

No. What you describe is a mold line. You need to sand them down to get them to disappear. A sink mark is a place where the material didn't fill the mold completely. In that case you need to fill or add material to it.

Here is a picture of sink marks in wheels. The spokes are supposed to be smooth.

Those are horrible! I've got a couple AMT Camaros and the sink marks aren't nearly that bad, but I have seen some in person that are. In fact the sink marks are not from a void in the plastic, but a common effect from a thicker-than-normal section of material that's run through a mold a bit faster than necessary. If they'd slow down the cycle rate the sink marks wouldn't be as bad. However AMT could and should have designed the spokes with a hollow area behind the thick part so that they wouldn't get sink marks like that. But of course AMT isn't known for quality control or spending an extra dime to make something right...once it's in the box, they don't care. I'm looking forward to getting a Revell Camaro, I hear it's wheels are perfect.
