ERIK88 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 How do you guys paint black trim on newer cars and get clean results? Black revell enamel marker ? Perhaps? Or maybe mask? I bought newer model corvettes I need help with .
64SS350 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Not sure of what part you're trying to do but you could maybe use semigloss clear over the area, or I recently purchased some black BMF to try
BKcustoms Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 You could definitely mask the trim with some thin tape but I've found the easiest way is to use a black Sharpie marker. If you accidentally get it somewhere you don't want just use polishing compound to remove it. Oh and nice avatar pic, Erik!
ERIK88 Posted March 8, 2014 Author Posted March 8, 2014 Thanks u have a nice avatar as we'll gotta love the Buick gnx s ! I think I will try the masking with tamiya tape sounds good
Foxer Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I've used the black BMF before and had no troubles with it, though I know some say it doesn't work. It has been on a Subaru I did almost 20 years ago and not lifted or changed since putting it on. I did all the black trim .. the window trim and the band around the middle of the body. For the blacked out areas on window glass I do use a black Sharpie.
cobraman Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I myself hate the black BMF. I tried it a long time ago and found it to be thick and the black flaked off. Did I have an old piece or an early piece I don't know. I have not tried it in a long time to be honest. If you use it please report back.
ERIK88 Posted March 8, 2014 Author Posted March 8, 2014 Looks very convincing , will have to give it a try, doesn't look to glossy [url=http://s219.photobucket.com/user/Foxerjr/media/91%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Wagon/91SubaruLegacy_Video_
Erik Smith Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 (edited) Mask with BMF (just apply as normal but remove the foil on the trim) and paint with appropriate color - I like Tamiya semi gloss black acrylic. BMF will pretty much stop any bleed thorugh and is thin so a paint "edge" is less evident. Edited March 8, 2014 by Erik Smith

Masking with BMF and airbrushing the black trim is by far the best way I've come across to handle this chore. It seems like extra work at first, but there's no better way to reproduce smooth black trim without wavy edges or brush strokes. And I've tried black BMF... I think the batch Mike used on his Subaru model (nice work, by the way!) was the exception, because I don't know of anybody else who has had any luck with the stuff.
