Speedfreak Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 (edited) This is a build I started in 1999, really. I painted it, then put it back in it's box and quit modeling intil 2012. I then built the engine (Four-Barrel version) and again put it back in it's box and quit modeling until about six months ago. Two/three months ago I decided to get it out and finish it. First up was the 'Four-Barrel' decal on the air-breather, and , after two failed attempts I decided to build the 'Six-Pac' version, hence the color variation between the block etc,.. and the air breather top. So, that's where this thread picks up, hope you enjoy! A special shout goes out to 'Tubbs' for helping me with this build! Comments/tips are very welcome! First up is the kit box: Working on the Six-Pack in-take system and the wing: The engine installed: Interior mock-up and undercarriage: Wheels: Outer/top rim: kit chrome, rim wall: semi-gloss laquer, Hub: flat laquer over chrome, Center: MM steel. Tires: AMT Custom pack The body that was painted in '99, Scoops were painted recently: A couple more body shots: And now the current problem, I filed the bottom of the tabs on the dash, preventing proper location prior to interior installation: What it 'could/would have' look(ed) like: I'm now faced with doing another dash (major bummer), unless someone has a solution. Thanks for looking! Edited March 22, 2014 by Speedfreak
slusher Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Gene, your build is looking great. Love the white interior and the paint finish is nice and smooth.
Speedfreak Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Thanks Carl, it's about time I put up a WIP!
PappyD340 Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Very NICE start, I have the same kit in my stash that I'm going to start before too long, going to do mine as a replica of the one I owned, although I actually owned a 72, mine was white on black with a matte black hood no scoops, anyway yours is looking good!!
hemi Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Very nice looking so far,I noticed that only one of those tires has the size on it.
mrmike Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Since you had filed the tabs off the dash, why not glue some new tabs on using sheet styrene? Here's a couple of pics showing the location of the dash in the chassis of two Dusters I have built. I hope this helps.
Mopar - D Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Gene this has been a long WIP for you but what you have done with it over the time looks great really like you clean build and choose of colors. I would try doing what Mike has suggested I think that would fix your problem with out having to get a new dash
Speedfreak Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Thanks Larry and Lee! Very nice looking so far,I noticed that only one of those tires has the size on it. Kevin, good eye! It's on the other side, I need to turn the other three over, thanks! Mike, thanks for the tip and the photos, I will give that A LOT of consideration. Gene this has been a long WIP for you but what you have done with it over the time looks great really like you clean build and choose of colors. I would try doing what Mike has suggested I think that would fix your problem with out having to get a new dash Dan, I already have a new dash, but , I will consider Mike's suggestion. I've never done any work with sheet styrene before, I guess now might be a good time to start.
Skypower Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Gene your build looks great I just bought this kit to steal the 6 pack motor out of for my attempt at building an AAR Cuda out of the new Cuda kit, I may just throw the Hemi from the Cuda in the Duster. Your doing a great Job!!!!! Bob
Speedfreak Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Thanks Bob, and , Ira! An AAR Cuda sounds really cool.
Speedfreak Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 Thanks Bruce. I painted that body 'outside' with a can of MM Panther Pink. What you see is just the paint, no polish (yet) etc,..
slusher Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 How is that dash coming Gene? With all of us looking in we should be able to help. I had the same problem with my first duster.....
Speedfreak Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) Nothing yet Carl, I'll get the new dash I have out today and clean it up so I've got a good idea where the tabs should be and how long/wide. Then I'll decide if I want to do the new one or not. It would be so much easier to just do the tabs, (any idea what sheet thickness that would be?) jeez then I'd be moving into the world of 'modifications' on a model, woooohoooo! I'll try to get something together to look at the stance also. Thanks Carl. Edited March 23, 2014 by Speedfreak
Speedfreak Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 I think I'm going to be able to make the current dash work, (I think). I'll post pics when I get it in.
BenG76 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) Why not use scrap plastic to rebuild the tabs you shaved off? Day late n a dollar short. Edited March 23, 2014 by BenG76
Speedfreak Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 Thanks Ben, There's still enough on the tabs that I think I can make it work, just needed to file some of the dash away around them. Hopefully I will have pics up by tomorrow.
tubbs Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Gene, it looks KILLER!!! I really love the color. I started a pro street one back around when you started this one. great detail, may be PM'ing you on some tips when mine comes back out.
BirdWatcher Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 What was your impression of the paint? I always thought Panther Pink from a can was a little thin. Looks like you did a great job getting the paint laid down.
Speedfreak Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 Al, thanks for the compliments. A pro street version of this car would be cool. First tip: Don't file the bottom of the dash tabs off prior to installation! Buzz, I painted this car like 15yrs ago. It was my last paint job of my last great modeling binge which lasted about three years. As far as I can remember it went on well. I used a rattle can (outside) and there is no primer on the car. I 'never' used primer until I started hanging out on this forum, I just did a lot of prep work.. My paint jobs were better than I'm doing now. Thanks for taking the time to post a comment, glad you like the paint.
Custom Mike Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Gene, you can build a Pro-Street version of this kit easily, just get another one of these and an AMT '70 Super Bee Pro Street kit for the chassis and rear end!
Speedfreak Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Wow, that's cool Mike! I've never seen anyone have the latch tab on the back window the way it's supposed to be, and the windows even open! Is there actually a 'latch' inside there? Fine looking car, that paint job is incredible. cool idea too, someday I'll get the Super Bee Pro Street Kit, got my hands full at the moment though, thanks for the post.
