afx Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) When I traded for the LS/Arii GT40 kit I was really hoping to build the '65 Daytona Winner (GT103). Unfortunately after examining the kit and in particular the shape of the nose it was clear that it would take substantial work the make it look like GT103. I dug through my reference material and searched the internet and came up with something that I think I can handle. I intend to build P/1005 that was entered by Scuderia Filipinetti in '65 Le Mans. The car only lasted until the 2nd hour but I think it is a nice looking car by a significant race team so I am going to give it a go. This is the kit we are starting with. Edited June 9, 2014 by afx
cobraman Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Love that car. looking forward to your progress.
afx Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) So as you can see in the kit photo above the chassis and interior are useless as a basis for an accurate replica. Therefore we will be using the Fujimi GT40 chassis and interior. As you can see from this photo the wheelbase is quite close. Unfortunately the Arii body is quite a bit shallower than the Fujimi. With the tires mounted they foul on the body quite a bit. This mean significant suspension mods will be required. Edited March 30, 2014 by afx
afx Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) We start raising the detail level by replacing the molded in fuel and oil fillers on the front clip. Edited April 25, 2014 by afx
afx Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 I felt the nose was a bit to elongated so I removed as much as I could (about 1.5mm) without having to relocate the headlights. You can faintly see the line in the photo marking the material I removed. The change is subtle but worthwhile.
Rocketman Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Great work so far, especially on the left front headlught area. Really does make a difference!
afx Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) Opened up the front brake cooling ducts Edited March 30, 2014 by afx
afx Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) The modified front suspension is on the left, notice how much lower the upper A-arms are. I had to modify the wheel upright to accept this lowered A-arm position. Fortunately the brake detail is not visible through the wheel. Edited March 30, 2014 by afx
afx Posted April 6, 2014 Author Posted April 6, 2014 (edited) Attached the front and rear panels and reshaped the front wheel wells slightly. The rear wheel wells still need significantly modification. Created the round driving light opening in the front valance. Opened and reshaped the air extractors in the front clip. afx Posted April 6, 2014 Author Posted April 6, 2014 I'm very happy with the chassis fit so far. Well see how the rear suspension goes.
Jeremy Jon Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Cool project JC, looking good! IIRC is that Scuderia Filipinetti also had a Shelby Daytona Coupe, in same colours, entered that year?!

afx Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) Finally have the rear suspension installed. A surprising amount of modifications were required to get the body and chassis to fit one another. Edited April 24, 2014 by afx
vamach1 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 And all this time I thought you were working on the Porsche.
afx Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 The Porsche is finished. I am also trying to get geared back up to finish the Cobra.
Duntov Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I really like how you are doing mock ups and set ups on the floor jacks and body dollys --- very similar to a 1:1 build --- I do this a lot for my own amusement ---but I am glad you shared this with us ----it is fun to do this!!!---your build is looking really good ---!!!
Bill J Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 The GT40 is coming along nicely. It should be quite unique with all the mods to the Arii body. It looks darn good!
