That was no big deal, but the rest of the mag is great! Also has a great photo of the Malco Mustang Gasser that is soon to be re-issued by Round 2. $6.99 is the cover price, wow I remember when the mags were 25 cents. Guess that was awhile ago.

Yes Nick, we can wax nostalgic all we want about 50cent issues of Hot Rod, but those days will never come back. Most mags today have adopted a style reminiscent of teen gossip mags, just small sound bites (print bites?) and some splashy graphics. Hot Rod Deluxe does a great job recalling the old Hot Rod and others from the 60s. I like Hot Rod Deluxe plus all the Hemming's publications and Collectable Automobile...those mags are written for adults.

Greg...thanks for noticing and posting.

There always has been a strong linkage between model cars and the readers of full size car mags, but most car magazine editors are not too aware of this, and even if they are, they often have other battles to fight.

In this case, HRD Editor Drew Hardin is aware of the link and devoted a full page of a very full issue to model cars. There are literally millions of Baby Boomers out there that built kits as kids, and don't have a clue that their one time hobby is alive and well. Bits like this help to spread the word.

Thanks again...TIM ..

HRD is no doubt the best magazine being published nowdays. keep up the good work. got almost every issue plus the three special editions & 2 overkill editions. lotsa good ideas in them for model building.

Perhaps if more "real" car magazines ran articles about our hobby, more people would take an interest and actually participate and build. Couldn't hurt. Street Rodder and Hot Rod magazines both ran articles some years back (if I remember correctly, Tim Boyd was a contributor to Street Rodder), and many of us remember the articles in Rod and Custom.

can you do that ? Copy Rights and all ?

Ehhh, I don't think that would fall under the Fair Use clause, would it?

Guys...like many magazines, the publisher Source Interlink Media would not appreciate an article from a current issue of one of their magazines being posted online.

As many of you know, magazines live and die by circulation numbers....if your budget allows and the subject interests you, it would be best to buy a copy.

Best regards...TIM

I have to agree Tim. I recently wrote an article for MCM and it wouldn't be fair game to put what I wrote on the 'net and post it here. Gregg and Harry spend a lot of time to get material for the mag, and it's only fair that articles that are written be kept to such.

Just my 2ยข worth! ;)

newsstand sales do absolutely nothing for circulation numbers. they are throw aways. Subscriptions are where circulation numbers come from, no ifs ands or buts. as it was so shall it be.

and so that is why most smart magazine advertising executives, who tend to know what side their bread is buttered on, would like to see articles such as this posted on the web for all to read. it sells subscriptions. and subscriptions through circulation numbers sell advertising. and advertising is what periodicals live and die on.

so in essence one is stabbing themselves in the back by not putting interesting articles, particularly when they are of interest to the otherwise non-target or marginally targeted audience for the magazine, on a website that could attract future subscribers amongst an expanding reading audience.

that is the real world situation. selling single copies is chump change and rarely pays its own way. newsstand sales are simply a loss leader to fish for future subscribers...something the internet has been shown to be much more efficient at.

JB, you are certainly entitled to your view on this but I suspect many magazine editors would take a much different view than the one you articulate here.

This is particularly true for Hot Rod DeLuxe, which is one of the single most successful automotive magazine title introductions over the last decade, and which was ONLY available via newstand distribution for several years until they began to take subscriptions a little over a year ago.

Most editors (and publshers) care about BOTH newstand and subscription circulation numbers, as together they are a sign of overall magazine health and as the basis for their advertising rate cards.

I don't formally sit on any magazine staffs these days but I have worked closely with a number of magazine editors over the years as a freelancer, having contributed articles to over 30 different titles worldwide over 35 years. On that basis, and also based on my understanding of Intellectual Property Law in part from my 35 years in the automotive industry, I stand by my position on this subject.

Thanks for your comments nevertheless. Always good to have an informed dialogue....TIM
