Dumb questions: CA glues

I am thinking about buying a bottle of super glue for my building.

What brand should I get?

Are there any super glues with a longer open time?

Is the Testors brand super glue okay? (Hobby Lobby has it in stock)

My model is in full primer. Do I need to sand either primer or paint off the plastics where my glue points are going to be?

Super glue - Cyanoacrylate - is a generic chemical thing. There isn't a better brand of sorts. What there is, though are different setting times and thicknesses ranging from thin that sets in seconds to thick (gap filling) that takes a longer time to cure. Go to a hobby store and buy the house brand. It comes from Bob Smith Industries. Here's a sample from the competition resins link:

EDIT: A bottle of UnCure is a nice thing to have for when (not if) you glue something to yourself. "Bonds Skin Instantly" is truth in advertising in action.

I like Loctite, but there are plenty of good lines. Satellite City Hotstuff, Bob Smith Ind., and several others.

Gel super glues generally dry slower. Bob Smith Industries also makes a slow-dry formula and a retarder.

If possible, yes. Super-glue will hold to plating, which is my main use for it in the event I can't remove plating easily. If the primer can't be removed, the super-glue will usually hold.

A thick super glue is better in my opinion, it tends to stay where you put it and you can use it with tooth picks and not drop off...

I buy the 4 tubes /1.50 at Walmart, and I buy 4 packs at once. I probably use 2 tubes a week, in my model car hobby. Been doin this for probably at least 10 years, and have no problems, other then the same problems you get with any other.

Ditto. Best price you'll find anywhere. It's the thin, watery kind... not gel-type, but not an issue for me. If you like the gel-type, you'll have to look elsewhere, but for me you can't beat that 4-pack from Walmart.

I have used some of the Dollar Store variety, and it works okay, except that the glue dries up in the tube pretty quickly. Will I experience this with the special applicators in the bottles, like the Testors?

My hands down favorite is Pacer Poly-zap. The main reason I like it is that it is much less inclined to fog other parts. It was designed to hold lexan radio controlled car bodies so it has a little flex. It is also a slower curing gap filler. If your plastic hobby section doesn't have it, try the Radio controlled shop.
