Old Coyote Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 ..... I was rummaging around in my model boxes in the attic and came across this car ........ I originally built it almost 50 years ago ......... my first reaction eas to take it apart and rebuild it using all the aftermarket parts and pieces which are available today ........... but then I thought better .............. it's built like it was nearly a half century ago ............. only changes are a new set of wheels from a Polar Lights funny car, Cobracolors Fiji Blue Pearl, and Slixx decals ................ upon sanding the body down, I went through five layers of paint before I reached the white plastic ............... red, black, silver, yellow, and green ............ this old beast has been around the block numerous times
1320wayne Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Leave it as it is. They don't make them like they used to. This looks great, especially for 50 years old.
John Pol Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I remember this kit as a kid keep it the way it is for sure
nitro norman Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Looks great! I really like the paint. Maybe Round 2 will bring this one back.
High octane Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Nice job on that 'Vair John, and I don't think that Round 2 would bring back a Corvair kit simply because I can't see enough return to break even with a release like that.
johnbuzzed Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Very cool! Looks like something that could have been in Car Model magazine back then.
rmvw guy Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 This must have been a fun project and now you have a real treasure to keep for ever. Nice job, the decals and wheels look great.
10thumbs Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Wow, 50 years ago and a Corvair is still around! Excellent. 1964. Ole George Nader whooped bad on Corvairs, got them off the road. This time must have been about the beginning of some kind of "safety swing" from Detroit. I can still remember outside rear view mirrors was an extra, especially on the right side. John, about the time you did this Corvair, I had a 65 Mustang that went under heavy surgery. Altered wheelbase, my first attempt, moved the engine back till it was under the windshield, and fixed up an interior with thin cardboard that I painted silver/grey. Cool cars, and building models that were not like the directions showed was an adventure. Please keep this "time witness" as is, it's better than great! Michael
jwrass Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 John, I Absolutely love it! I know the phrase Back In The Day is used on a regular basis! But I miss the "Run What Ya Brung" days!!! Nick Names, Wild Paint Work, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG Smokey Burn Outs! I am so blessed to have had a Father who took me the races on a regular basis. Thanks for the Memories!!! jwrass
Dragracer Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Looks awesome John, lots of colors used there over the years, blue looks great!
62rebel Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 the tooling is still there, AMT released the '69 (?) Corvair in their Prestige line in the '90's and maybe once or twice since then.
