Taillights and Blue Dots for taillights

Was just Micheal's hobbies and craft store and found the following.

Little adhesive rhinestones. Both purple and red. Silver backed. Will made great taillights. And the very little purple ones should made blue dots for taillights. $2.49 for a package of 116 pieces.

Haven't used them yet. But, with tweezers and my OptiVisor it should work out. We will see (for sure with the OptiVisor).

I have been trying to find some of those that are not beveled.

I haven't seen them in a while, but HL used to carry a similar product called cabochons that were the same as rhinestones, except they are smooth with a bit of a dome shape. I picked up a couple of bags of them, clear and multicolor in 5mm, but have not seen them in some time. They also came in 3mm and 7mm, IIRC.

Here's my first use of them.

AMT's old boat kit came with no taillights for its trailer. No problem now. I think they work perfectly in this application.

I keep checking to see if they have "non-facetted" versions of those rhinestones but have yet to find any.

I have a hard time forcing myself to use red bumps that don't actually look like tail light lens.

I used nail jewels for my blue dots. Found them at a Sally's beauty supply store while shopping with the wife. I also bought sanding sticks in differant grits.

Are those rounded or are they cut like a actual rhinestone?

they appear facetted but they're so small that it doesn't seem to matter.

Faceted would be ok on a Blue Dot, as they are faceted in 1:1. Tail lights on the other hand, generally are not.

Yes the nail jewels are faceted, but they are really small.

Never have heard of jewel nails. What exactly are they?

At places like Michaels, Jo Annes, etc. Look for small bags of blue sequins, about 2 bucks a bag..... Check the bottom of the clear bag; in the packaging process the little 'punches will show in the bottom ( sometimes a LOT).....These make PERFECT scale blue dots; coat the tail light with clear, place your blue dot where you want it . The slow drying clear will let you move them around and adjust. Let dry, then coat the entire tail light, blue dot and all, with the clear again. I use 'acrylic' clear, because of it's slow drying time......'Z'

Nail jewels are decorations that are glued onto women's fingernails.

For blue dots, try MV lenses. They are intended for model railroaders, but cross over just fine. Hobby shops that carry a lot of RR stuff should have them or be able to order them, and they are available on line, of course. The lenses come in assorted sizes and colors and there are many model car applications where they can be used.
