philo426 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Ii want to build a Porsche 917 ,but the few kits available seem to be very pricey.I decided to attempt to use an HO Aurora A/FX slot car body as a pattern to scale it up to 1/25.I know it will not be easy,,but I think i have a fair shot at it.I made the templates out of .80 styrene.
Pim Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Awesome idea great to see some more talented scratchbuilding
philo426 Posted August 28, 2014 Author Posted August 28, 2014 Cut out the pieces and put the shell together.
Art Anderson Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Something to consider though: Aurora, just like most other HO slot car manufacturers, used a standard chassis underneath their cars, and designed body shells to fit that standardized chassis. As such, most body shells for this type/scale of slot car tended to be compromised at least somewhat to get a body that fit well, but still looked pretty much like the real thing. You may want to search for more detailed dimensional information on the Web, if your goal is to make as accurate a 1/25 scale model. Art
blunc Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I have a 1/32 version of that. The brand on the box is Matchbox but it looks like a re-pop of the 1/32 AMT Penske Can Am Porsche. There are still some overpriced sales of these on "the bay".
philo426 Posted August 28, 2014 Author Posted August 28, 2014 Yes it does seem oversize.I will press on as a proof of concept exercise and may build another in the future once I successfully complete it(I hope)!

philo426 Posted August 28, 2014 Author Posted August 28, 2014 (edited) After some thought,I cut a piece of 2 by 4 to the correct shape, clamped the plastic to it,and used my wife's hairdryer to heat the plastic to conform. Edited August 28, 2014 by philo426
Jaguar man 21 Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Great idea I'm looking to see how this turns out
philo426 Posted August 29, 2014 Author Posted August 29, 2014 All of the ducts have to be shrouded and the wheel vents have to have arched grilles.Much work ahead but it is looking like a race car.Much bigger than 1/25th!More like 1/16th!

To better get my idea check the following link: http://www.the-blueprints.com/blueprints/cars/porsche/19573/view/porsche_917_10_can_am__1972_/ Scratch build always fascinated me. ZTony8 Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 If it fails to come out looking enough like a 917/10 you could always lose the rear wing and call it a dirt modified-it's that close.
philo426 Posted September 1, 2014 Author Posted September 1, 2014 (edited) Made and installed the rear valence with louvers. Edited September 1, 2014 by philo426
Pim Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Looks great Phil you have much better skills than me any ideas on what you might use as a chassis under this
philo426 Posted September 1, 2014 Author Posted September 1, 2014 Well.it is my idea to get an R/c chassis for it.
philo426 Posted September 2, 2014 Author Posted September 2, 2014 Primered and painted it silver prior to painting it white.
