youngtiger1 Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Hey Guys, I need your help with information regarding a car model I will like to build. I am a big fan of the Andy Griffith Show and I will like to build the police car from the show. Is there any 1/25 or larger kit/decals out in the market that will help me with this project? Are there any figures of Andy and Barney out there? I remember Barney had a motorcycle with side care in one episode...that will be cool to build as well. Most of my resources are on military vehicle and aviation, so any input will be greatly appreciated Mike
Mike Kucaba Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Someone made a 4-door Ford in resin. don't remember who though. I think it was a '63.
Deathgoblin Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Looks like one of the cars was a 1964 Ford Custom, according to the IMCDB. Here's a link to one of the pics: http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_59128-Ford-Custom-54E-1964.html It looks like AMT made a 1964 Galaxie kit that would be close. Model Roundup has a resin kits of 1959,1960 and 1963 Fords done up as a Mayberry Police cars. Here's the link for that: http://www.modelroundup.com/category-s/192.htm
1930fordpickup Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) As Brian has pointed out. On the website above it shows 1959,60,61,62,63,64,65,66,67 Ford Galaxies four doors. http://www.imcdb.org/movie_53479-The-Andy-Griffith-Show.html Edited September 19, 2014 by 1930fordpickup
pharoah Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I've noticed on the show that the cars are always kind of dusty and dirty. My guess is to keep the lights from reflecting off of them.
youngtiger1 Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 Now this is what I'm talking about...thanks guys. After looking through the imcdb link, I think I really like to build the 1962/63 Ford Galaxie and looking through modelroundup site they have a conversion for the 63 police car. It's listed at $52.90 for the top body, bucket light, and Mayberry decals. According to the description I will still need to find a AMT 63 Ford to build the model. Well, I hope it's not a hard kit to find. It's interesting this project will cost just as much as an average 1/32 kit and depends on the aircraft...this will half in size. Well, I think it's still worth it. Btw, is it safe to order from model roundup? First time ordering anything from them, so I thought I ask. Thanks again guys. Mike
mikemodeler Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Modelroundup is safe to order from, they have great service and I have bought from them many times without an issue.
1930fordpickup Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 AMT 63 Ford is not a hard kit to find. If you did not know the 62 and 63 are different cars. The 62 is more like a 61 .
youngtiger1 Posted September 20, 2014 Author Posted September 20, 2014 Thanks again guys for all your help. I found an AMT kit on eBay for very reasonable price.
Edsel-Dan Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I believe ONLY the 62 & Possibly 63 Used the 'Galaxie' name on ALL Full sized Fords. In 60 & 61 they were Fairlane's, From 64 up they were Custom's. All had Only the Base level Trim. I have seen the Gum-Ball Rotator Dome & decals available as a set from PoliceCar Models (dot) com Too. Try there. But, I am not sure the Rotator is fully accurate as it is Too flat topped. I believe ALL Mayberry Cruisers Expect the Chevy in the Reunion Move were Round top Gum-Ball. The Chevy had a Blue Whelan Strobe Lightbar!! As for a 59, If Model Roundup is offering a Mayberry version, I Hope it looks like an LAPD car as the ONE & Only time we saw Andy In a 59 In the Danny Kaye/Danny Thomas show episode that would be the Pilot for Andy, it had the "Coffee Can" Lights on it, NOT a single Gum-Gall Dome I have a 59 Mayberry in progress!!! I have already posted pic's but can here too if desired. I believe Ed Fluck's (Drag City Resin) Father {F+F} Offered the 61 Fairlane 4dr sedan, But Ed dropped that shortly after his father retires/left the after market business. AMT's 64 Craftsman kit will take A LOT of work to convert. You Might be able to make the 61 Styline/craftsman roof work, but they are very different. Also, Removing all that chrome trim. Especially from the front fenders. The 65 & 66 can be done more easily.. And the 70 Ford Police car kit might be a good one to do too Wasn't "Mayberry RFD" still on then?? With Goober as Deputy or even Sherriff?
ToyLvr Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 "Missing Link" resin caster offers a '64 Ford Galaxie 500 4-door body. That might make for an easier conversion for your project.
Mooneyzs Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Where is Danno when you need him..... "Paging Danno to the Lobby.... Your assistance is needed".....
oldcarfan Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Is Chimneyville still around? I built a BFC (Barney Fife Car) years ago using a MOdelhaus '63 Ford 4 door and C-ville's Mayberry Sheriff decals.I think they also used to carry an Andy figure too. Oh and a long whip antenna made from guitar string.
youngtiger1 Posted October 21, 2014 Author Posted October 21, 2014 Sorry for the late checking in here...been busy with work tryin paying bills. You guys are great with tons of info for a guy like me. I sure do appreciate it very much. Edsel Dan, please do share your photos. I'm always happy to see models of what I want to do. It gives me motivation...at least to pull out my wallet and spend money...
Edsel-Dan Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 (edited) OK here are the 2 pic's I have of the Andy/ Mayberry 59 Ford. Note, This Cruiser was seen only Once, And Not even On the Andy Griffith Show!!!!! I wish I had her painted, Not likely now though with Cold coming so fast some days!! And YES the LAPD Can lights Are correct for this One! Just, Not sure if rear lenses should be red, or amber The Roof is from a resin 59 Edsel. Body is an AMT Sunliner. ALL Bright-work had been removed. A previous owner was going to use the Revell parts on it I have a second 59 Ford Police Cruiser in progress. 1 2dr Sedan for Baltimore City That one started as a Revell Skyliner kit I don't have the decals for her yet either, so................ And, Yes, I would Love to do as many of the Mayberry cars as possible. How long did Mayberry RFD run After Andy?? Till 71?? And then the what, 78-89 Impala/Caprice of the Reunion Movie "Return To Mayberry"?? Edited October 21, 2014 by Edsel-Dan
Agent G Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 The LAPD Mickey Mouse ears set up was used most likely because that's probably what was on the lot at the time of filming. LAPD used steady burn red to the front and flashing amber to the rear. Return to Mayberry featured a black/white '79 or '80 Chevrolet Malibu 9C1. That car had a red/blue Twinsonic light bar. All the rest except that '59 Ford previously mentioned had the single red rotating beacon on the roof. G
Edsel-Dan Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) The Return Movie was a Caprice/Impala, not a Malibu, and had an All Blue STROBE Lightbar Whelan possibly Not a Twinsonic, and No red on it I know the ends were Round, Barney drove up with the Siren on (Yelp) & Strobe flashing when Opie's wife was in labor. At least, I Don't remember a Second car, Only the Impala/Caprice I have only seen that movie once, and do not know if it was ever repeated, or released on video/DVD Is it on-line somewhere?? I believe all single rotators were round top (Gum-Ball) Federal's. The resin one offered in the Chimneyville/Policecarmodels.com set is almost flat-top and not correct for most years of the show. (I am Wrong here! 1964 Custom shows a more flattened top rotator) Edited October 22, 2014 by Edsel-Dan
Agent G Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 http://copcardotcom.fotki.com/photographs_of_greg/fgs/foreign_departments/zreturntomayberrymo.html I'd call this a Malibu. G
Ron Hamilton Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 There are a few 4-Door Fords in scale. Missing Link Resin '64 If you can find one, a Hubley '61 Which is the quintensential Mayberry Squad Car, and what I plan to do with this one.
