kpnuts Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Hi all started this one but I am having all sorts of problems with the paintNever had this problem before still stripped it all off and tried againstill not happy with it there must be a reaction with the plastic or something, might try barrier coat or something.
Jeremy Jon Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 (edited) What paint is that used Ken? Sometimes there can be reaction if the body still has residual mold release agent on the surface I like to wash thoroughly with dish soap, then let dry a few days (spare microwave is nice dust free place), then prime coat (Tamiya white primer is ideal) Use Castrol purple degreaser to safely strip the bad paint off Good luck! slusher Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Jeremy has a real good point. If you Tamiya primer the paint has something to stick to...
Guest Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 You may be putting it on a bit thick as well, 2nd set of pics are better.
kpnuts Posted October 5, 2014 Author Posted October 5, 2014 Hi all thanks for the comments I have been using Halfords grey primer and Humbrol enamels, never had this problem before and I would've thought the oven cleaner I stripped the first lot of paint off would have taken care of the release agent.
iBorg Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Then the question is how well did you remove the oven cleaner? That could be your problem.
High octane Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Kenneth, I got around those paint problems by building the pre-decorated Batmobile. I had a LOT of fun building it, as I was constantly checking the website so I could get the details right, or at least close. Even though the kit was pre-painted, I still used 'bout 18 colors to detail and finish the model. I also liked the pre-painted figures as well. Someone said that they were rather cartoonish, and I certainly hope so as Batman started out life as a COMIC book.
kpnuts Posted October 19, 2014 Author Posted October 19, 2014 Ok all I know its been a long time since I updated this but its not been forgotten I have tried mr muscle, modelstrip and even nitromors and this is what ive got. I've spent half the cost of the model on stuff to get the paint off. It doesn't show on the pics but there seem to be little holes in the paint that go right into the plastic, I think the paint has bonded with the plastic and actually soaked into it, which is why it wont come off so I think my only option is to sand it and try spraying it again I will just have to live with whatever the results are. its a shame as I was really looking forward to this one.
rustybill1960 Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Wow bummer Dude A real shame about the kit and paint problems Maybe some filler primer, wet sanded and flat black, then check out the body for smoothness, pin stripe and then just clear coat it? I hope You get it to work out. I started a Futura conversion a long time ago, hmmmmm, I wonder where it is? Good Luck Ken Later Russ
kpnuts Posted October 20, 2014 Author Posted October 20, 2014 Hi all well this is after one sanding and undercoating I think I might be winning
gtx6970 Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Went thru a similar issue when stripping a Polar Lights 65 Dodge a year or so ago. It was about ready to drop the body in the trash and start over . Finally got the paint to loosen up after soaking in brake fluid for over a week , even then it took a brillo pad to get the paint to come off
rsxse240 Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I have had very similar experiences with some of the softer AMT plastics where the paint seems to bond with the plastic, or it leaves etching that is impossible to sand off or even fill with primer and block sand smooth again. Painting is one of my least favorite tasks of building models, unless it goes well. When it does go well, I know there is something else that is going to make me want to smash it into little pieces.
fantacmet Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I've had that issue with some department store paints that used tow ork fine but don't now(they changed formulation, even krylon fusion does it), it seems to be etching the living BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH out of the plastic. It's a royal pain. (no that wasn't a British pun either). I've saved very few, and usually end up trashing them. I have a pair of wings for an airliner I'm going to find a way to fix because the rest of the kit is perfect. Glad to see you have gotten somewhere with it.
kpnuts Posted November 3, 2014 Author Posted November 3, 2014 Hi all giving up on this paint job its reacted again, so I'm going to do something different with it. Batman is forgotten all his wonderful gizmos and gadgets have fallen into disrepair, including his trusty old batmobile. That's going to be the back story on this model now. So will start tomorrow with a renewed enthusiasm for this build
stitchdup Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I had a problem with Plasti Kote primer not drying on just the blue plastic from the Revell escort rs1800 kit. my first lot just wouldn't dry so i sanded it back and used a new tin(bought that day) and the same happened. I ended up getting a tin of Holts acrylic clear plastic primer followed by Holts acrylic filler primer and it worked fine. Might be worth a try before it drives you mad. I plan to use the plastic primer first every time now and stick to Holts for all my bodies.
kpnuts Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 Hi all well this is going back in the box and being buried at the very bottom of my stash. as I was warned the decals are awful and do break up but they also dont stick. it must be a draught that moved the decal as I hadnt touched the model when I took these pics. so I have had it with this kit. I was going to do a dio of it on a dereclect street all rusty with weeds growing out of it but with no decals to show what it once was it would be a pointless dio, could be any car with no decals.
