Art Laski Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) Usually I like to build serially, but lately I've been getting the itch to try some other things while I'm hung up on other projects. I have been dying to try working with some brass since I was given a rack of metal last year. I thought a good first project might be a replica based on parts and dimensions of a die cast midget I bought a few years back. I wanted to see if any of the parts would be a help to me in building my dad's midget he had back in the '80s. I'm not quite ready to start that project, but I thought instead I might modify the die cast to resemble my little brother's midget he raced in Indiana back around 2008. Most of the project will be scratch-built or contain parts from Monogram/Revell sprint car kits. Here's a few shots of my brother's car: Edited December 10, 2014 by Art Laski
Art Laski Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) Here's the die cast: This my first attempt at scratchbuiling an open wheel chassis and my first attempt at brass work. So far it's a lot of fun. It's not dimensionally correct to the real car, but is consistent with the die cast so that the parts fit. Edited October 21, 2014 by Art Laski
2whl Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Art....this looks like a cool project. And you have some excellent photos to document the build. Can't wait to see more.......

Art Laski Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 Wait a minute! Are you talking "Modified Die Cast classes" at the Phoenix Dessert Classic? I'm going to have to step up my game, lol Absolutely! I'm planning on being there, but not sure this one would be ready on time. We'll see, though...
AzTom Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 I'm looking forward to seeing it. I sure hope I will get something done by then.
Art Laski Posted October 18, 2014 Author Posted October 18, 2014 I managed to get the other side built. Amazingly, it matches up pretty well with the first side!
Art Laski Posted October 19, 2014 Author Posted October 19, 2014 Not all the bars are in place, but the two frame rails are connected...
John Teresi Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Art…….."WOW" buddy looks soooooooo dang good man………perfect for your first time Art……….way to step up your game
Art Laski Posted October 23, 2014 Author Posted October 23, 2014 Small update- I added a few more bars. The anti roll tubes on the ends will get trimmed later. Not much different visually, but this actually took quite a bit of time to get the rear cage braces done.
AzTom Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Very nice. Gets tricky keeping all the joints together at this point
Metalmad Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Very impressive work with the brass Art ! and I'm sure this build will be amazing when it is finished.
Art Laski Posted November 5, 2014 Author Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) Thanks for looking guys! I have been making some progress on the components, but nothing much to show yet. Should have an update soon. Edited November 5, 2014 by Art Laski
