W-409 Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Great looking project! This kit sure needs some extra effort to make it look really good, but looks like you're doing a great job. The opened grille is a great touch. I've seen Petri's build in person in both stages (WIP & Finished) and it sure looks great. I'm sure yours will be another winner when done.
GeeBee Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Looking good, these old Esci kits can be made into nice models with a little bit of extra work ....
Randy D Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Hi JC, That front end work really paid off !!! Randy
dublin boy Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Nice work on the grill. I have the last ROG boxing of this, not so easy to find now.
afx Posted November 23, 2014 Author Posted November 23, 2014 Nice work on the grill. I have the last ROG boxing of this, not so easy to find now. Yea there is one on ebay. Last I checked the bid was $51

If you know Petri please tell him I said thank you. His build is a great reference and an inspiration.
PowerPlant Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Great work so far! Which PE set are you getting for it? I ask because I like how you've opened the grille, but the only PE set for this kit that I am aware of is the one from Reji, which includes a couple of grilles, so all of that meticulous labor you've put into it might have been redundant, no?

Hey Matija. Yea I ordered the Reji PE set. If I like the PE grill better I will use it or save it for a later build. I want to build more that one of these kits. Edited December 15, 2014 by afx
PowerPlant Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Cool! Looking forward to the progress on it
Art Laski Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Glad you're building this. I have one I want to build and I appreciate what you're pointing out here. Looking good and I'll be watching! -Art
afx Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Thank you for everyone's interest so far. Here is a comparison of the modified and the unmodified body sitting on the same chassis. Modified wheel well. Unmodified wheel well
jbwelda Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 looks good but I want it lowered about 4 - 6" all around! I think those tires should be up inside those flares. maybe not for a rally car but definitely for curbside appeal! jb
afx Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 (edited) I hear you William, but rally cars of that era needed quite a bit more clearance for wheel travel than current rally cars. Even on tarmac events. Edited January 6, 2015 by afx
hjracing Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Looks really better whit the mod! keep it coming!
afx Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) Here is your chance to tell Revell you want this kit reissued. Vote here. Vote for the street version here. Edited December 15, 2014 by afx
afx Posted December 15, 2014 Author Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) If you look closely at the passenger side front wheel arch extension you will see that it is at an angle to the side of the car. This is incorrect and does not match the driver side. In addition they width of the flairs are much wider than the 1:1 car. I will attempt to correct this. Using the back edge of a #11 blade I carefully scribe off the front fender. After quite a bit of sanding I was able to remove 2mm (2 scale inches) from the overall width of the flairs. They should be narrower still but I was concerned about removing so much material that I wouldn't have anything left to reattach the extensions. The white body shows the original shape and width. afx Posted December 15, 2014 Author Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) The rear wheel arch extensions (Ford's official term for the flairs) also need to be reduced. However I chose to reshape them with sanding only in lieu of cutting them off. That would have required that I recreate the belt line crease in the rear fender. I removed the stone guard from the front edge and sanded them down until just before I sanded through the outer edge. Here are the results. Edited January 5, 2015 by afx
afx Posted December 15, 2014 Author Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) A couple of fellow modelers from another forum were kind enough to send a photo of the engine bay and suggest some revisions. So I reshaped the snout (wiper motor box?) on the firewall and also removed the braces in front of the inner fender. Before: After: Edited December 15, 2014 by afx
afx Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 (edited) Radius rods are complete. I still need to fabricate the Panhard bar and the shocks/struts. If you notice the cut out in the floor pan is too shallow, it would interfere with the radius rods under full compression of the suspension. SOO we have to make them deeper. That is what I am working on now as well a fabricating the full roll cage. Edited January 5, 2015 by afx
1 bad55 stan Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Great fab work!your doing a good job...
