freakshow12 Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 Thanks again. I do have a decal for the oil filter but it will go on once the engine is in for final time. I got a bit more done on the chassis. Subframe connectors and rear cage plates in, driveshaft loop mocked up. The exhaust is pretty much sorted but I'm not ready to show that just yet. Now I'm building brackets for the manual steering rack and I need to make a little more room for the torsion bars near the headers. Not sure what to do there yet
MGL Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Where's the "like" button on this thing? Oh well, looking good, I like this.
microwheel Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Nice work Fred buddy, I really like the scratch built detail level your putting into this.
W-31 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Just like in the real world, dump the torsion bars and put some coilovers on the front.
freakshow12 Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 Thanks guys. I'm a Ford guy in the real world so I had to do a little looking but I found several ways to do coil overs. That's the plan of attack tonight. Also gonna scratch some cal trac bars for it and a fuel tank. By the time I'm done the chassis could be a model in itself. It will be wearing show type glossy plum crazy paint too
johnbuzzed Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Mopars are usually set up with pinion snubbers, not traction bars. I don't know why but it's been that way for a long time. They definitely don't have the eye-appeal of a nice set of traction bars. Your build is coming along nice and it's similar to something I have in mind. I'll be following.
freakshow12 Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 My 68 cuda had inboard super stock springs, snubber and a Dana 60 with 4:88s. Big tires and it hooked! Now days cal tracs are the way to go. They work so good
freakshow12 Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 There we go! About 30 seconds trimming and I had coil overs mocked up on the front. Couple stiffening brackets like I saw online and some detailing and the torsion bars are toast!
freakshow12 Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 Got a bit more done. Adapted a manual rack and pinion steering setup. Made some brackets and got it started. Filing and trimming to make it pretty come next
freakshow12 Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 Now with that and the coil overs the front is pretty well set! I'm able to sneak the steering shaft in through the headers too! Here it's sitting on all 4 at ride height
microwheel Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 .Outstanding conversion on the front suspension Fred. I really love the way the thing sits. It's gonna be one mean duster when you get it done.
freakshow12 Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 Had a good day today. Rear suspension is ready to be broken down for paint. Cal tracs turned out ok. Exhaust is figured out. 3" pipe to modified stock tips. Next up is a fuel cell. Got some black on the rims too
mustang1989 Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 That looks good Fred! What did you use for exhaust pipes?
freakshow12 Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 Thanks. I use some shiny 2.95 mm solder for pipes. Bends and drills nicely. This system I think is going to be flat black. Mufflers are aluminum tubing
mustang1989 Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Hmmmm. I think you may have unlocked the mystery on how I'm going to do the exhaust on my F-100. The bends look so uniform between the two tailpipes. How did you go about shaping them?
freakshow12 Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 I always do the over axle bend first, then I just work my way out until I clear everything that needs room to work. Here are a couple others. On the mustang I made the tailpipes. The kit ones are brutal! Even for a stock 5.0 they are wrong
mustang1989 Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Nice!!! I actually do have some of this stuff in my bench stock. Thanks Fred!
freakshow12 Posted April 13, 2015 Author Posted April 13, 2015 I use styrene pins and ca glue to hold it together. X pipes are super easy to make that way too
freakshow12 Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 Finally some progress in the right direction! Cot some paint and detailing done on the rear end! I got a fuel tank in that I like and made a sump for it. Getting closer to some real results on this one. Thanks for looking
mustang1989 Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 (edited) Man you're just strollin' right along through this part of the build! It takes me forever to get past all of the plan out. Where'd you get the little nuts and bolts for the under ride bars Fred? Edited April 14, 2015 by mustang1989
microwheel Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I like the detailed mods you've done to the chassis Fred. And I really like the way you do your exhaust systems.
slusher Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Excellent work and progress Fred, love the exhaust work...
