Superpeterbilt Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 (edited) Hey guys, I finally got a break tonight from renovating the house. I was in desperate need of some build time. I didnt really want to jump back on an on-going project, plus Ive been itching to start another one. I was collecting reference photos of Avella's King Kong Paystar rotator, when I decided it was time to convert my old Paystar. Im going to build the real truck later, so this one is just loosely inspired by the truck. I had the body from a trade a while back. It was missing a lot of parts, but the important parts are there. This actually allows me to play around and scratch build the stuff thats missing. Heres the inspiration. Here what I started with Modified some Italeri rims, and added some fat rubber I moved the whole rotating platform forward into the compartment where the outriggers were. Then I moved the outriggers in front of that. I cut off the rear of the body and added a flat tailgate like an older style Challenger. Im not going to have an under-reach. Im going to build a beefier towbar for more of an 80's style wrecker. So, after a few hours Im satisfied with the look. Edited November 26, 2014 by Superpeterbilt
truckabilly Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 Awesome modification of the wrecker body. I like the outriggers on the bumper in your inspiring photo. Never seen that before. Cool.
Superpeterbilt Posted December 11, 2014 Author Posted December 11, 2014 Heres a re post of the pics lost.
Petetrucker07 Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Looking good Terry. Awhile back, there was a guy building something like it, but RC. I dont know what ever happened to it.
Superpeterbilt Posted December 11, 2014 Author Posted December 11, 2014 Thanks Clayton. I originally built the truck years ago after robbing the mixer from it for another build. It came out good, but I never have "loved" it. I put a wet tank on it and a dump trailer at first. After looking at pictures of King Kong, it was elected to become a rotator.
Tesla Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 This looks real nice.Terry. This is going to be one tough looking wrecker!
Mopar - D Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Great subject to build and your doing a great job on your build.
Madd Trucker Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Looking good was looking for heavy wrecker pics and came across the build ofo the real truck if I can find them again wil post the site for you
Superpeterbilt Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) Looking good was looking for heavy wrecker pics and came across the build ofo the real truck if I can find them again wil post the site for youIt was on the Tow 411 site. They detailed the whole conversion. Heres a pic of King Kong before it was a tri axle rotator, and before High Point owned it. :Note the drag winch at the end of the bed: Edited December 12, 2014 by Superpeterbilt
Trucker Al Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Love it! cant wait for the finished product! Alex
Superpeterbilt Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) I reworked the rotator base and added some gussets. I moved the winch platform back along with the hydrolic ram base to make room for the drag winches. I added the base & guides & gussets for the drag winches. This truck will have six winches when completed. Edited December 21, 2014 by Superpeterbilt
Superpeterbilt Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Todays progress, I started getting the winches put together and placed throughout the rig. Im almost done fabbing up the drag winches on the boom, and the rear drag winch. I moved the two main winches on top of the boom rather than in front. I added two big gussets underneath the boom drag winches.
gotnitro? Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 That's a tough looking truck Terry! Great idea adding all the gusset and ribs on the boom. Might have to borrow a few of these ideas for my lonestar wrecker!
