Roadrunner Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I can't believe that I just now discovered this thread; how utterly cool. If I have the time, and can get my ducks in a row, I'd like to take a stab at this group effort.
Belugawrx Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Welcome aboard Kevin just post a pick of what kits you will you use ...and your in We only have until Dec. 1st tho so...y'kno Get Crackin'!! Cheers
Jantrix Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 What's wrong with Washington? Wrong time of year, but... If your going to be in the Seattle area and have time, Skyway Hobbies is a pretty cool little shop. We are actually having one of the warmest, driest January in a very long time. Nothing is wrong with Washington. I'd just rather do my job at home. I had my fill of being away while I was deployed in the Coast Guard. What were you convicted of? Eight weeks of hotel room nights sounds like some modeling time. I'm not going to be bringing my models. I'm told that I'm in for long hours and long weeks, so what time I have I'll probably take in the sights a bit. I'll be in Redmond, not too far from Seattle. However I just found out (minutes ago) that there is still a meeting with the project lead tomorrow, to determine suitability on both sides. They are looking for an RF tech and my RF experience is easily 15 years out of date so we'll see how it goes. Fingers crossed.
Jantrix Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 New subject. Lets talk about glossy paint. How suitable would a nice gloss paint job be on a sleeper 77 Pacer wagon? You think it would come off as a polished turd and be unremarkable, or do you think it would stick out and kick it out of the sleeper category? My final goal for this model will be something oddball that I can compete in the tuner category with at local contests. So after the Cannonball photos I'll be adding some racing decals and a wheel/tire change. But I want a nice gloss paint job. So am I gonna have to paint this one twice or you think a glossy paint job would still fly? I'm torn here. The car will look VERY stock when I'm done with it. Standard street tires with chrome baby moons. I could REALLY use some feedback.
Lunajammer Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) Oh well, that would still give you 40 more weeks to dabble. At the Cruiser lab it was agreed that when you have a wagon with a lift gate and a big fat engine as cargo, ya might as well show it off. Opened up the gate. Now I need to do my first hinge job. As Charlie Watts, drummer for the Rolling Stones said when he was asked about why he was playing at the famed NY jazz club The Blue Note... If you want to continue growing as a musician (modeler) then it's inevitable that you learn jazz (hinging doors) so you might as well stop fearing it and embrace it. bill_67 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Mike that pt cruiser is looking great. Can't believe how well that fits.
o-man Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Rob, I'd say shine it up. To me it would be an almost period correct looking car with a surprise
Lunajammer Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 How suitable would a nice gloss paint job be on a sleeper 77 Pacer wagon? .......I could REALLY use some feedback. I've kicked it around myself for my own project and after much thought I think glossy is fine and here's why... I believe we said there is no date restriction or timeline so you can claim it's, say, 1979. Would it be a shiny sleeper that year? Secondly, I remember clearly there was no fondness for Pacers then, no matter how shiny, it would not be looked upon with any particular admiring notice. I'm going shiny on mine because even in the snow belt I haven't seen hardly any dull PTs. I say the more it looks like a family wagon, the less it will look like a street threat to anyone at all. I don't think junker is the only form of stealth.
Lunajammer Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Mike that pt cruiser is looking great. Can't believe how well that fits. Lots of great surprises. Chassis had long engraved ridges at the exact width I needed, just followed the lines for cutting. It's nice and flat so no troublesome protrusions. With the exception of the rear interior floor, the interior requires no further mods. Engine front comes right up to the console ash tray like it was meant to stop there.
zenrat Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 That'd be Charlie Watts not Bill. Bill Watts is a former professional wrestler. I'm going with shiny paint in a bland and boring colour. I've just goggled Chevy Citation and there were some wonderfully yawn inspiring 2 tone paint jobs.
Lunajammer Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 That'd be Charlie Watts not Bill. How embarrassing. I have a professional acquaintance named Bill Watts.. The confusion. This is my vote. Insufferably conservative. Put on your fedora, pack your pipe, don your tweed coat and get out the earth-tones.
Dragfreak Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Messed with a little tint, does this speak sleeper or grab attention? I'm not sure but I like the looks of it. Opinions anyone?
hacked Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 hi Guys, gotta get in on this, i'll be doing a 53 chev on a roadrunner chassic with a dodge 660 engine.

Build what tickles your fancy, you are really the one that has to be happy with it in the end.
Jantrix Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 , i'll be doing a 53 chev on a roadrunner chassic with a dodge 660 engine. This I gotta see. In my opinion sleeper doesn't have to mean it's junk.. Build what tickles your fancy, you are really the one that has to be happy with it in the end. I quite agree. And trust me I will. I just value the input from you folks, and since your thoughts seem to jive with mine, I feel even better with my decision.
zenrat Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) Mock up. That spoiler has to go. Wheels are (probably) AMT '76 Caprice I found in one of my "wheels" boxes. Tyres are (probably) AMT (probably '66 Ford Galaxie) Goodyear Blue Streak Stock Car specials. I like the way they have "for racing use only" moulded on the sidewalls. Fitting the Prowler chassis is going to take a bit of work. It needs to lose 5mm to match the wheelbase and if I mount the engine in the usual location i'll be driving it from the back seat. Especially given I plan to replace the stock V6 with a V8. Edited January 28, 2015 by zenrat

Looking good there Mike re; hinging rear gate.. you might want to look at reverse hinging it... tube and wire on the gate and receivers inside on the roof? doesn't look like there is much meat left on the door to fit receivers just a thought That there is a lot of engine crammed in that there hole Cheers

I've just goggled Chevy Citation and there were some wonderfully yawn inspiring 2 tone paint jobs. Yawn inspiring ...for sure Fred My parents actually had one of those back in the day 4 door hatch, front wheel drive Talk about under powered... It sounded like a herd of gerbils in a blender and would pull to the right,.. when you punched it from a stop! Make a nice sleeper tho Cheers **(no gerbils were harmed in the typing of this post)
TFchronos Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Wow, we're barley a month in and you guys have done so much already. That PT is going to be a killer Mike. Fred, if anyone can make that combo work, it's you. I share the same opinion as Andy, I don't think "sleeper" is restricted only to junkers. I think it can also apply (in some cases) to some cars that appear factory stock or normal as well. The point of a sleeper is to make you believe it is something that it is not. Whether it's a rusted and dented junkyard special or a stock normal daily driver, of course which way you go with it depends on the car you are building. In your case I think you could get away with it, if I didn't know it was planned to be a sleeper I think it would fool me.
Jantrix Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Gentlemen. And everyone else too. After conferring with Gregg, he will not be altering the poll function for our December race poll. I'm not angry at him, there are other options. I've found this. http://www.poll-maker.com/ I'm fairly certain a site like this will allow us to create ONE poll with all entrants listed, so we get one winner. Easy-peasy. We'll create a completed builds thread like we did last year, and add a link to the poll elsewhere. I'll get with Tim when the time comes and we'll get it sorted. Problem solved.
hvymtl Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Well i hate to say it but my 1:1 project 84 Elky is the exact same colours as that 4 dorr citation. i would show pics but am at work. still planning my my entry for this year coming to gether this weekend so pics forthcoming Michael
Lunajammer Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 We'll create a completed builds thread like we did last year, and add a link to the poll elsewhere. My only concern would be if voters need to register and create an account for the free site in order to vote. That might ward off a lot of voters. Even if we had to stay within the confines of this forum, it could still be done with a "none of the above" tab on all questions, then just pick the one car and "none of the above" on all the rest. Either way, we're sitting okay for the final vote.
