Raul_Perez Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) Yes, I was surprised to see a multi-page article on brand new, right from the box, Danbury Mint diecast cars!! As the very proud owner of somewhere between 75 and 80 DM models, (ranging from early Ford Model T's to some of their latest and best Pro-Stock and Pro-Street offerings), I was pleased to see the DM folks getting their duly deserved accolades from MCM! Yes, they truly are precision designed and crafted models with features that will amaze and impress even the most discerning of model builders. Here's a few of the DM Streetrod, Pro-Street and Pro-Stock models in my collection (Except for the White '68 Camaro on the right and the Ford GT behind it): For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to see these models up close and personal, Bill did a great job describing just how awesome they truly are. I only wish that the good folks at DM would setup a website to sell some of the parts that they use. So, thanks Bill and Gregg for including some of the best models I've ever seen built in 1/24th scale in this month's copy of MCM! Regards, Edited February 2, 2008 by Raul_Perez
Harry P. Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 I'm also a big fan of DM and FM...I own a bunch of 'em. They're really pretty spectacular models (especially the newer tools...you have to see these things in person to appreciate the level of detail they include). Are they models? Of course! Do they deserve a place in MCM? I sure think so!
MrObsessive Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Yes, I have a few of the 1/24 DM cars as well. I've got three of the 1/12 scale ones.................'57 Chevy Convertible, '56 Corvette, and the 1964½ Mustang Convertible. Yup they're definitely models, while I'm not a major diecast collector by any means-------I will buy 'em if they're accurate looking and not toylike.
Harry P. Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Bill, have you seen the new 1930 Caddy V16 in 1/12 scale from Danbury? Spectacular! I put in my order a few days ago.
Raul_Perez Posted February 2, 2008 Author Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) Bill, have you seen the new 1930 Caddy V16 in 1/12 scale from Danbury? Spectacular! I put in my order a few days ago. I just got the flyer for the new Caddy in the mail yesterday!! It's amazing!! The driving lights that turn with the steering exemplify the level and attention to detail that the DM folks put into every one of their models. And the working latch on the golf club door is nothing short of scale excellence! Unfortunately, I’m trying to keep my ever growing collection to 1/24th scale. I am just out of room!! With the exception of DM 1/16th scale 55 Chevy Pro-Street, that I just couldn’t return after seeing how nice it is, I simply had to draw the line somewhere! Please post some pics when you get the Caddy. From what I understand, they're shipping them now. Edited February 2, 2008 by Raul_Perez
MrObsessive Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Yes Harry, I got the flyer the other day! It's very impressive and I might spring for one even though I'm not into that era of car. I was hoping that their next 1/12 would be either a '55 or '57 T-Bird, or even a '64 GTO convertible! A logical next step might be a '68 Shelby Mustang Convertible since they already have the basic bits with the '64½ Mustang. They seem to come out with a new 1/12 about twice a year so here's hoping........... Raul, I'm kinda limited on space too for 1/12's......(gotta build more shelves!) but I'd certainly make room for the ones I mentioned above!
Bill Coulter Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Thanks Bill for the kind comments. I know how sensitive many builders are to the whole diecast thing but these two Mopars just blew me away. At my age I saw these cars when they were new and on the streets. Being an old industrial designer my designer's eye saw perfection in these two pieces that is rare even in the finest diecast models. Though MCM makes every effort to present the best in plastic, I told Gregg these two cars deserved a place in the magazine. BC

BC Well, Bill, if you liked those two, which I had already seen the reviews of in the Diecast Zone and they're great, then you should take a look at some of their new Street Rod, Pro-Street, Pro-Stock offerings. I show them to my modeler friends and they're blown away by the fit, finish and detail of every one of them. Like I said earlier in the post, I wish the DM folks would sell parts. Here's what I mean: Regards,
Gregg Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 See, it's all Bill's fault!!!! Seriously, it was a great piece, well done, by a great guy. Thanks, Bill. And I have to thank Harry for the great layout work also. I have nothing against diecast, most of you probably know that by now. I have even popped for my fair share of FM ones over the years. All I need now is good display case to show them all off :-)
Harry P. Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Raul, I have that Charger too. Also the 57 Chevy. And the 67 vette pro-mod. They are really incredible models.

All I need now is good display case to show them all off :-) That's too funny!! No, I certainly don't expect, or even hope, that MCM regularly features prebuilt diecast models. I see those reviews on the Diecast Zone, which is a good place for them. It's thier focus. At the same time, I do feel that it's good to occasionally let the folks who do read MCM know what's going on in the diecast world. FMs are OK, I have a few of them, but I'll put any DM up against an FM for fit, finish and detail any day. Thanks again, Edited February 2, 2008 by Raul_Perez
Guest rick r Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Okay, Gregg does the acceptance of the DM and FM cars open the door for an article on the West Coast Chevies I showed you awhile back? They're certainly on the same level of quality... It can easily be arranged...
Gregg Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I would have to leave that up to my team of experts. What I don't want to see is another red `65 Mustang, if you know what I mean It has to be something different, worthwhile, and stands out from the crowd. What comes to mind for me are the CMC models that are being released all the time They are distinct, and of such high quality, we all want them, but maybe can't afford them. There is some in between area that we can cover, that's not covered in Wayne's column, which he has done since the beginning of MCM.
lordairgtar Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I like the DM and FM cars, too. I have a couple of them. I tend to choose ones I can't get as plastic kits. I just wish they would find a better way to address the door hinge problem. Great looking models only to be ruined when you display the doors open.

The CMC models are truly works of art. The only reason I've stayed away from them is because I'm keeping my collection to 1/24th and 1/25th for space reasones...but they sure are tempting... Some of the DM special and limited edition stuff might be interesting. They typically sell for just under $150. Regards,
Guest Davkin Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Okay, I guess I'll be the one to go against the grain here. First off, I don't have anything against diecasts, in fact I had a fairly large collection at one time, (people were getting them mixed up with models I built, so I got rid of the diecasts.) and spent a lot of time modifying diecasts. However, with how thin our model car publications have become the last couple years I'd really rather see the limited space go to model car BUILDING articles rather than reviews of pre-built diecasts. David
BKIN10SECS Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I LOVE DIECAST.....and the reason being...there came a point in my model building that I just got really tired of seeing the same stuff year after year, reissue after reissue. So I began to look elsewhere for subject matter and I found it in Diecast. I totally understand why a lot of contest entering model builders have a hard time with seeing diecast entries....with some I do too...reason being most of the time just a simple wheel swap is all that is performed to that diecast, and then entered as if it was a built model....I'm not with that!!!!! But as I continue to build and modify diecast, and most of my builds are of the curbside genre...but I like to say they are curbside plus because they just aren't nice paint, wheels and dark tinted windows (not that there is anything wrong with that style) I just try to add a lil bit more. I do body mods, paint, interior and I just started some machining etc. I can remeber when in the early to mid 90's there were some shows not acknowledging low riders, and then it took a lil time for the tuners....all I'm saying is there is a lot of good diecast stuff out there...can it sometimes get pricey....oh yea but diecast is kool and I think it will be an imerging subject matter that we will be seeing more of on the contest level. On the same token does that mean I will never build plastic again...of course not, but it doesn't matter to me what that car or truck is made of...if I can use it or it looks good or it may something really different and kool, that I know I can't find it or ever will find it in plastic...guess what...I'm buying it, I may put it on the shelf or I may modify it and if possible....enter it
