Looking at the photos I'm going to put this one right at 1982, a few months before it got totaled.

It's death stemmed from the lower right ball joint going out and the control arm went through the tire, fortunately I was just pulling out so that was all the damage.

I called for a flat bed and the driver said I needed to remove the driving lights or they would be removed forcibly, since I was only a few blocks from home I ran and got a couple wrenches. When I returned the car was in flames, a moron decided he could nurse it up the bed. Considering the control arm was embedded in the asphalt, I have no idea what logic he was using.

When he tried to start it he flooded the side draft Webers fed by an electric fuel pump and then the car backfired. Dumass left the key on so the pump fed the fire plenty of gas. I was told flames came through the defroster vents and hit the idiot in the face. Served him right.

I sued him won the case and bought the '73 Camaro with a few hundred left over.

Whoa !

I am left speechless by the stupidity

As tragic as I felt the loss was at the time, the reality is I would likely never found the Camaro (that I still have) had that not happened.

I learned a lot from that Vega, and I while I've wanted to make this model of it for a long time, I don't want another real one.

hard to make a vega wagon look cool, but this is it!

I too had one of these 'things' back in the day, orange with brown doors and that plaid interior. I got it near the end of it's usefull life, but it managed to get me where I needed to be :)

While casting some other parts I was using dye to color the resin and came up with a near exact match to the color of the spoke section of the wheel straight from the mold.

Finding tires proved to be more of a challenge. I settled on this two piece injection molded tire from a MPC Volare Road Runner with Parts Pack.

I filled the tire with polyester filler and turned it down and reshaped on the lathe.

Then I cut a little tread pattern into it and removed the axle post. For a curbside it should be fine especially after the side wall details are added.

These are the resin parts I will detail and finish.

Wow that is great looking. Can't wait to see them detailed out. You have a lathe at home for turning these? I would like to see about getting one down the road.

Digging around last night I found a piece of aluminum pipe in my metal stockpile, it had a slightly larger O.D. and a smaller I.D. that what would work for the outer rim for the wheels. So I machined up a set and also modified the wheels I cast to accept it. The aluminum is something from the plumbing supply section of a hardware store. Not too soft, but also not heat treated and very gummy to cut, but it was so close to the size I needed it was worth it to use.

This is the first one I test made before doing the set of four I’ll actually use.

Very cool project, My first car was a '71 vega panel express, and my current racecar is a '71 vega panel express. I'll be following along closely.
