Sport Suburban Posted September 1, 2014 Share Posted September 1, 2014 I wonder if your rear bumper is like mine. My 72 has some serious sink marks in the rear bumper. I thought it was glued but when I took it apart it was snapped and no glue was used. The chrome on mine is shot. So I was planning on filling it in and getting it rechromed. You are right that the Johan snapper kit is the same as the promos, then there was a NASCAR issue of the '72 Torino but the body and bumpers have been modified , the tail lights were blocked off on the NASCAR version. Modelhaus does make stock front and rear bumpers. If the new Revell kit is going to be a full detail kit it should work great as a donor. The platform would be the exact same for the 1972-1976 Torinos-1971 and before the Torino's were unibody -then changed to the down sized 1977 LTD II The front and rear bumpers look right to me on the Johan kits I'm looking forward to the new release of the Starsky and Hutch Torino myself, with a few '72 Torinos that are going to get the donor treatment. I will build one of the new Revell kits as a stock '74 Torino like my aunt had but never really liked the Starsky and Hutch show-or that car.....LIKE two undercover cops would drive around in a ketchup red car with a big white stripe down the sides and not get noticed ? You've got an MPC Torino stock car body. Jo-Han's Torino stock car body wasn't altered other than a hole on the drivers' side quarter panel, for a fuel filler. Jo-Han's Torino stock car body wasn't altered other than a hole on the drivers' side quarter panel, for a fuel filler. It had a separate flat hood, and all of the stock trim was left on. The bumpers were stock; the headlamp fillers, grille mesh, and taillight fillers were separate parts. You are correct- I think that stock car was a reissued (MPC) Model King kit-that was the reason I bought the gold promo with a broken A pillar---for the stock interior tub, stock bumpers, glass ect. It might be hard to see in the photo but the fuel filler door has been filled/smoothed. It has no side maker lights either. And a removable hood that I opened up the scoop. The stock car body also had hood pins molded in . But the bumpers , interior tub and glass fit like a glove -THAT is the body I'm planning to make a tubed 1/4 mile car out of. In that picture the primed/sanded stock car body has the stock front bumper on it from the gold promo (it has the turn signals molded in and I have drilled out the head lights to take clear lenses ) But thanks for pointing that out. I think they are referring to your statement about the JoHan body and bumpers being modified. Johan promo kit and NASCAR racer version had the exact same bumpers and grilles castings.....showroom stock lights and details. (but for the NASCAR gas filler) JoHan supplied covers for the grille, headlights and tail lights for the racer version. The MPC racer kit was cloned from the JoHan so the two kits will swap bumpers, grille, glass, hoods etc. The Model King was just a slightly modified reissue of the MPC kit. The NASCAR Torino has a flat hood and open . Sometimes the body appears completely stock with the side trim and a hole for fuel filler on the side. I am not sure if the AMT version was borrowed or copied from Johan, but some appear to have racing covers on the grille. The johan Gran Torino Sport has side trim. The fuel filler is behind the license plate in the 72-up Torinos, unless the car in question is a Ranchero or a station wagon. Then it is in the left quarter panel. Years ago, I bought a set of Lazer stripes for the Gran Torino Sport from a vendor on Ebay, and they looked pretty good. Today, I was going through my collection, and found a Nascar body that was given to me by a good friend well before the Revell announcement. I have a Johan Snapper that is unbuilt, as well as a Nascar kit. When the Revell kit comes out, I am going to kitbash it with the Body I have to do a variation of Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino.
