Ferrari 250lm

Been over a year since I finished a model, it seems my muse went on an extended vacation. Still not sure if the muse is coming out to play or not, but I did manage to actually start a (hopefully) quick project a few days ago. The kit tires really started eating into the wheels rather quickly, so those got tossed aside. A quick dive into the parts bin netted a set of wires from the old Monogram 427 street Cobra, which I fitted along with the Cobra's kit tires. Today, I stripped the wheels and airbrushed them in Tamiya XF-16 flat aluminum, leaving the kit knock-offs chrome. I also ditched the Cobra kit tires in favor of the no-name big-n-littles from the '66 Penske Vette kit. Also made new tail pipes from drilled out evergreen tube, and fitted the intakes to the openings in the body. Not alot of work done, but at the rate I have been building (or not), it's a step in the right direction...

Bill,

It's a curbside kit from Academy, very simple, but comes with PE trim for the headlight rings. I got mine from Nicholas Henson, but they pop up on the 'bay frequently. The decal sheet has the numbers for the version I am building as well as the yellow Ecurie Francorchamps version, and a pair of scuderia shields for a street version. I've seen two different boxes, one with a red street version (mine) and a white box with illustrations of all three versions.

I think Hell has frozen over... I actually got motivated enough to squirt some paint this afternoon!! Tamiya TS-08 Italian Red over Tamiya white primer. Gonna let it cure up, and hopefully I can mask it without too much trouble and get the blue on it. WOOHOO!!

Well, it's "make or break" time for the Ferrari, and I've tackled the one thing that I sorta dreaded the most: Masking. The center stripe is actually pretty easy, but I had to eyeball the curves to wrap around the nose. I think I've got it where it needs to be, but I'll take a look tomorow with fresh eyes before I start squirting paint. My plan is to airbrush a thin layer of white primer before I airbrush the TS-10 french blue, so it stays nice and bright over the red. This is gonna be fun

You might try a light layer of clear, first. That way if anything bleeds under the tape it'll more than likely just be a little bit of clear that will easily be covered with a final coat od clear after the stripes are done.

Good luck,

Took a look at the tape lines again today, made one small adjustment, then got down to business. Decanted a little Tamiya white primer and a little TS-10 french blue, and fired up the compressor. A light dusting of the primer to keep the blue from turning purple, followed by a few super thin coats of blue worked out very well. I love Tamiya tape. The radii across the nose look pretty darned symmetrical to my eye, and bleed through was not an issue. I forgot to tape the back of the headlight openings, so I got a little overspray in the buckets, but they are gonna be silver anyway, so it's not a big deal. Could this be the slumpbuster I've been waiting for?? Hope so :-)

Now that's some excellent masking Brian! Tamiya tape has come to the rescue more than once when I needed to mask something.

It's the best stuff out there IMO for masking! :o

I agree, the Tamiya tape is excellent stuff. The other material that I use for taping whenever I want a perfect, fine line is burnished BMF cut with a new #11. It never creeps once it's put in place.

Still workin on gettin my muse back... and got the interior done!! Pretty much OOB, but I cut the openings in the door panels to match the 1:1, and I had to sink the instrument binnacle down in the dash a little to clear the windscreen. The seats are TS-44 brilliant blue with a bit of dullcoat sprayed over them, the rest of the interior is X-18 semi-flat black and XF-16 flat aluminum. I also used a parts box steering wheel. The wheel included in the kit was too nice to be burried in a fixed roof car, so it's been set aside for later use in smoe sort of open-top ride. B)
