GeeBee Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 And now for something completely different, I've never built a hotrod before, so here goes, and another thing I've never tried is finger nail polish, so this one, if I get it right, will be done in a very nice shade of blue metal flake .... Removed a few very faint mold lines and re-scribed the panel lines, got the seats built up and started on the engine.
dublin boy Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 I'm sure this is going to be fantastic Geoff, it took me long enough to wangle you into making a Rod!
GeeBee Posted April 25, 2017 Author Posted April 25, 2017 Well the blue flake finger nail polish didn't go to plan, tried it out on the spoon test first, it barely made it through the #5 tip on the Paasche H, however I did find some gold flake finger nail polish, that went well on the spoon test, but didn't cover over the primer on the body, looks like it needs to be put over a gold base first, so the body sat in the stripper for a few days, and today got it back in primer, think I'm going to give the finger nail polish a miss until I've practiced a little more, so after looking through my paint stock, I've decided to do it in Chrysler Neptune blue metallic, a colour from the late 70's.
thatz4u Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Geoff, know you'll do great job on this one as usual, Al Rich
mustang1989 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Hmmm.............I've never tried the fingernail polish either Geoff. Will be watching to find out some tricks of the trade. I love the subject BTW. Never can see enough of these.
bobthehobbyguy Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Great start. One suggestion you really should trim the tabs on the hood. You run the risk of chipping the paint as they come.
microwheel Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Well now you've peaked my interest Geoff. Cant want to see how this one turns out. I know what you mean about finger nail polish. I never had much luck with it myself.
GeeBee Posted April 26, 2017 Author Posted April 26, 2017 Got it airbrushed in Chrysler Neptune blue lacquer, much better luck this time, just a few dust nibs to remove before it gets a few coats of acrylic clear coat
GeeBee Posted April 26, 2017 Author Posted April 26, 2017 Sanded out the dust nibs, had to blow it over, as the paint went down to the primer on the edge of the rear wing, pretty happy this time, not a dust nib in sight
dublin boy Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 (edited) Gorgeous. What kind of paint is it Geoff, it's already very shineyOh, and do get rid of those thing on the bonnet, Bob's right. Edited April 26, 2017 by dublin boy
GeeBee Posted April 26, 2017 Author Posted April 26, 2017 Gorgeous. What kind of paint is it Geoff, it's already very shineyOh, and do get rid of those thing on the bonnet, Bob's right.those tabs are now history Shay, the paint is old school cellulose lacquer, I really doesn't need a clearcoat, as it could be polished as it is, but as it's a hotrod, I want the paint to have a real wet look gloss, the colour was used on late Hillman imps, Avengers and Hunters.
GeeBee Posted April 27, 2017 Author Posted April 27, 2017 Got the clearcoat done this morning, it will now be left until next week, then it will be wet sanded and polished to get a deep wet shine
GeeBee Posted April 28, 2017 Author Posted April 28, 2017 I'm not sure just what this clearcoat I got from my local bodyshop is, but it dried pretty much straight away, it's the same stuff I used on the 57 Chrysler, and as I'm going to be a little busy over the weekend, I thought I would get a little work done on it today, it really didn't need wet sanding, there was one tiny dust nib in the drivers door that needed sorting, and then I started on the polishing, using the different compounds I usually do, so far I've got the roof, bootlid, drivers door and front wing done.
mod3l Lover Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 NICE!!! That color is perfect for that body shape!! David S.
GeeBee Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 Got the one side finished off last night before I retired for the night, just the bonnet and the other side to do, and that's the polishing finished, then I can start on building the rest of the model.
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 Wow - the reflections tell it all..!!!! Looks like you laid it on really nice.
