Safire6 Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 I want to get rid of the texture of this vinyl tip and make it looks smooth like a regular steel hardtop. Any suggestions on how to do that? Sand it or fill it in with putty I guess are the only two options? Anyone ever do this before and have any tips? I don't mind keeping (or eliminating) the 'ridges' along the sides and front. TIA!
StevenGuthmiller Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 It's quite a bit of work, but just my 2 cents worth, I would sand it. That's how I eliminated the vinyl top detail on my '64 Grand Prix. Steve
espo Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 In addition to sanding the surface it would be a good idea to mask off the trim around the roof area also to prevent any damage.
Greg Myers Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Paint prep is also an issue as there will be bleed through if care isn't taken. Prime, sand, prime, sand etc.
Bainford Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 I think I would sand most of it off. First scribe the window trim quite deep so you don't lose it. Sand most of the texture is off, then mask off the rest of the body and apply a couple heavy coats of primer and sand that smooth. Keep some masking tape over that fine engraving on the 'C' pillar while sanding so you don't accidentally damage it.
64Comet404 Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 I would mask off the mouldings, sand, and then brush on some liquid cement. Once dry, sand again, and another coat of liquid cement. The liquid cement is used to try and remove the 'memory' of the texture, so it doesn't pop through again.
Safire6 Posted November 6, 2020 Author Posted November 6, 2020 Thanks for everyone's replies. I will take all into consideration. What kind/brand of liquid cement do you recommend Ken? I have never heard styrene having a "memory".
64Comet404 Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 I use Plastruct Bondene or Ambroid liquid cement, something which is hot enough to engage the memory of the plastic. Many modellers refer to it as 'ghosting', where emblems they have sanded off/removed return after applying a coat of lacquer.
