carsntrucks4you Posted October 4, 2021 Author Posted October 4, 2021 I'm sorry for the late solution of this very easy ? quiz. It is a 2002 Mazda Cosmo 21. In my opinion a forgetable retro design of the original Mazda Cosmo from the sixties. peteski Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 Funny, I didn't do any research, but as soon as I saw that photo, I thought to myself that it has some of the Mazda Cosmo "flavor". Looks like I was right. I didn't know that Mazda produced a new "retro" version. I'm not a fan of the new version -- the original looked much better.

I totally agree with you that the original looks much better
Pete J. Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 (edited) I disagree. I like the updated version better, but it looks like the designer tried to copy some of the styling cues from the Merc 300SL. Maybe if they had copied the gull wing doors it might be a stand out. To me it looks to bulky (heavy), the sides are too busy with all those "features" tacked on, and that heavy molding in the middle. The large silver wheels with low-profile tires also throw it out of balance.

Like so many cars of that era, there is a lot of stuff just stuck on. I also like the transition of the roof into the rear deck better. Yes the rims are not to my liking but I see the "tribute" aspect of them. Also easily changed. It is interesting to see a side to side comparison.
peteski Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 (edited) Funny how we see things differently. Chrome? What chrome? There is barely any chrome on the original (compare it to its contemporary American cars). IMO, it had very restrained chrome trim. Window surrounds, headlight cover surrounds, and bumpers. Can't really be any less on a car from that era. As far as "a lot of stuff just stuck on", to me the new one is much busier looking with "stuff" stuck to the sides. Plus, as the photos show, the now one looks too "heavy" or "portly", where the old one looks much "lighter" (svelte, more sporty). Overall, its shape looks cleaner. Edited October 6, 2021 by peteski
Pete J. Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 Peter, there is no arguing taste. I remember cars of that era with modest fondness. I had a 72 240Z that I bought new. Never much liked the chrome bumpers, especially with the addon overrides which were critical for others who parallel parked by sound. In 1974 when the national 5 mph bumpers were mandated, a lot of these type of cars got real ugly! I appreciate your opinion. I just don't share it.
gbtr6 Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 Todays Japanese cars are too overwrought with the curves and such. I like simpler. Perry
