Old Buckaroo Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) First off you guys are a really bad influence. I have spent the last few weeks reading every post in the BIG Rig section between paint drying on a couple of cars I am trying to finish up. The last Semi I built was over 33 yrs ago. A few days ago both these kits arrived from an old friend in a trade. I thought I could resist but nope Somehow I dont remember all those pin marks from way back and I prefer the old white plastic over this gray stuff - it seems softer. That is all for now Edited February 28, 2014 by Old Buckaroo
tbill Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 haha, welcome to the dark side i have both of those kit's waiting their turn. can't wait to see this done, should make for a nice combo.
purepmd Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Hey Buck, I think you will find that these are as infectious as the real ones. Once they are in your blood, there is no hope, your hooked. Great start. Very cool work stands. Mark.
Force Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) Sean Have you shortened the frame? If not, the one in this kit is too long for what I suspect you're going to build from this one. Around 65 mm (2 9/16 inches) shorter is about the right length. Edited January 10, 2014 by Force

You betcha, Although I only removed 48 mm as with the mock up it looked right to my eye. *Disclaimer* I am going for close not exact otherwise I will get to obsessed with details and never get this built. Like my frame shop And your right on the money with your suspicion. Edited January 10, 2014 by Old Buckaroo
Force Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Looks good, happy building and be sure to update often.
Q tip Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 just forget the disclaimer, your already sucked in,"wa ha ha ha!". im green with envy about that combo, model truckin.com has got a nice selction of aftermarket decals including bj and the bear........
Kostas Parchas Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Nice so far. I like those white bricks helping you there. I have to ''borrow'' some of them from my nephiew to make a frame rails jig. Keep it coming. Kostas.

I have to ''borrow'' some of them from my nephiew to make a frame rails jig. Keep it coming. Kostas. They are so useful, I started using them years ago to assist with leveling aircraft wings , Make a small box to hold those tall skinny glue bottles , decal setting solutions ect. Q-tip - thanks for the links and encouragement to jump in the deep side of the pool
Old Buckaroo Posted January 12, 2014 Author Posted January 12, 2014 I am starting to see red on this build Still need to unmask the other airbags.
kilrathy10 Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) Awwww, Man....Why'd you shorten the frame???? Just kidding....I like to stretch frames, for some reason....I haven't found a reason to shorten a frame, yet....Not that I'm looking for one....This one is gonna look good.....You've gotten yourself a couple of highly sought after kits in the Big Rig modeling world....I wish you well on this one....Excellent work, so far....I like the red frame....And just like in fence building, if it looks right it IS right.....I do a lot of eyeballing in my work, as well....Makes things go a lot faster, too.....And the Lego box for glue bottles is an AWESOME tip.....I don't know why I never thought of it.....Wow!!!!! Funny thing about shortening this frame - It is against my beliefs ! I grew up out west where you had forty acres or more to turn a rig. When I was a teen I bought two of the BJ Areo's and stretched the frame and doubled up the sleepers for a real highyway palace. Legos - I love them I cant tell you how many of these bottles I have knocked over when doing work - wearing my Optivisor so I can see. Thanks for looking in and commenting ! alangarber Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 That is looking good. I wish when I done my B.J. and the Bear years ago I would have shortened the frame. That looks better

JT, you like to lenghten frames because you always have tons of neat equipment to put on your rigs! That's why! And Sean, you're in for a fun ride, everything's bigger and easier to handle than on 1:24 & 1:25 cars. I'm not knocking them 'cause some of them are just like little jewels. But trucks are fun! Good thing you shortened the frame, cabovers don't all look great with a mile long frame, especially if it's a fleet unit. Besides, a long frame partly defeats the purpose of a cabover tractor anyway. Edited January 12, 2014 by BigBad
Force Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) If the frame needs to be shortened or stretched to do a correct build of the subject I'm building I'll do it, and sometimes when I do a more generic build I'll eyeball the length, leave it as is or modify to my liking. The frame in this AMT kit is unnecessary long as it was meant to go under the transporter bed of Tyrone Malone's Papa Truck and Hideout Truck and was modified for them, but for a tractor that's supposed to haul a trailer it's far too long and doesn't look right...not ot my eyes anyway...and the BJ truck was quite short. alangarber Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 From what I was told a long time ago is that the reason those frames in those COE kits are long is beacuse the molds are from the Tyrone Malone PaPa Truck kit thats why they are all long and was never made shorter.

Hey I just bought one of those today ! I like the looks of it way better then that AMT Ford LN 8000 Race car Hauler.

trick my mixer Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Here is my version of a short frame.............LOL!!!!!
Q tip Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 looking good, cant wait to see more! heres one of my shortys too.....
Old Buckaroo Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Nice short trucks Qtip, You could always hide one of those model railroad smoke units in the sleeper and fire up those stovepipes in that KW ! Still working on this - Spent most of last night masking the interior to get it painted. Haven't decided how I am going to paint the blanket yet. If I was high tech and had a printer I would go for a "Pendelton" blanket. Now the hard part painting all the details. Edited January 13, 2014 by Old Buckaroo
Old Buckaroo Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Didn't want you all to think I am slacking. Got my replacement engine in the mail so I have been working on it. Not to dissapoint Q-tip with my disclaimer I did have to change the fuel filter setup for this old gal. Did not care for the compressor to the turbo either. Yeah Q-tip I know... olsbooks Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Looking good! I have gotten hung on using paper for fabrics. If you have a Hobby Lobby, go in their scrapbooking section. Some incridble stuff there...including pendleton blankets. I just "rough it up" if needed at all with very fine grit to give it a just a bit of fuzz plus it is easy to put in "wrinkles" for those that did not spend time in the barracks.
Q tip Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 "welcome to my web" said the spider to the fly! lookin good, where are you going to get the decals from?
