58 Impala Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Just saw this model on the shelf at my LHS, is this a reissue? Has anyone out there built one, is it any good? Kind of a steep price for the kit, was wondering if it is worth buying.
Craig Irwin Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I'm with Harry, if thats the kit its nice.
Harry P. Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 If it's the kit I think he means, then yes, it's a reissue, and it's very nice. Fully detailed engine, opening hood, trunk and doors, front seatbacks tilt forward, IIRC, separate chrome trim spears, etc. I think there's also an open/closed sunroof option.
58 Impala Posted November 12, 2011 Author Posted November 12, 2011 (edited) You're right Harry it was a typo., I meant 52. I think the kit box said it had the 1200cc engine. It looked like a neat kit,I think I may go ahead and buy it. Edited November 12, 2011 by 58 Impala
Craig Irwin Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I remember it being about $50 ten or more years ago. (and worth it)
Harry P. Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBMFF
Casey Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Yes, it's a re-issue, and as mentioned, very nice. Lots of detail throughout, but it builds a 100% stock split window Beetle. I bought one in the '90s to use for a Durachrome Bug F/C project, so I have very few parts left on hand, but the beltline chrome trim is indeed separate, as are the door handles, center hood trim piece, and I recall semaphore turn signals in the B-pillars. I think I paid $60 for it over a decade ago, so prices really haven't gone up that much on these kits. Buy it. You won't regret it.
Chuck Most Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Just what I need.... ANOTHER 1:16 kit to buy!
Greg Pugh Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I think the kit box said it had the 1200cc engine. Not if it's a '52. 1200 was a later engine.
Junkman Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 It is a reissue and it is worth every penny. Yes, it would have a 1131cc engine, which is fiscally a 1200 in Germany. Even a 1101cc would be.
62rebel Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 in that scale there's no reason for not installing working lights. it BEGS for details and deserves them.
Junkman Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Moving trafficators would be nice with the working lights.
62rebel Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 don't see why not.... carve them out of clear styrene; paint the surface and put a light fiber into the end... Q.E.D...... was this the same basic kit that Revell used for the "Elegant Beetle" custom Rolls nose version?
Casey Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 was this the same basic kit that Revell used for the "Elegant Beetle" custom Rolls nose version? No, the two kits are not related. The Elegant Beetle was a Monogram kit, and the VW Kafer was a Revell AG tool. The VW Kafer is related to the 1/16 Karmann Ghia, though.
Swifster Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 So it's not a 3n1? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Foxer Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 What we REALLY need is a 1/24-25 split window!
Junkman Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 What we REALLY need is a 1/24-25 split window! Absolutely! Until then, we have to alter the Gunze/Mr. Hobby oval window. Or whack out the division bar of the Revell and make a 1:16 Inch Pincher out of it.
larrygre Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I agree. Buy it. Don't even think about whether or not you should. I reviewed it many moons ago in CAR MODELER and had my socks knocked off by how nice the kit was. That said, we still need a good split-window Beetle in 1/24-1/25 scale.

VERY nice kit.... just too darn big. A 1/25 Split would be great, especially with a Hebmuller option!
Chuck Most Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I'm all for a split Beetle in 1:24/5 scale, but I'd really like to see a Thing kitted first. Reworking a Hasegawa Kubelwagen just isn't really workable.
Chuck Most Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 This is a '60 model, but there are a LOT of great reference pics here. Check it out, just seeing a 60 Beetle with 7500 actual miles is a pretty cool thing to behold anyway! http://www.oldbug.com/marxred60.htm
