Just wondering what everyone uses as paint for painting an aluminum engine block. I used to brush on Model Master enamel and I looked the look of that. I now prefer to spray the engine blocks with rattle can. I've tried the Model Master Metalizer Aluminum Plate but it is mush to bright of an aluminum for an engine block...it almost looks like polished aluminum. I tried a Rustoleum Aluminum as well but it looks close to the Model Master Metalizer....any other ideas?

I used Alclad 'dull aluminium' on a Porsche 904 engine i am working on. So far not bad.

Alclad is awesome stuff, but it is expensive. Also is the requirement to paint a layer of gloss black to get the metal sheen and then several light mist coats of the Alclad. I love the stuff, but the Krylon Metallic paint comes out nearly as good and it is just point and spray.

The heads on this one are Kyrlon Brushed Metallic Satin Nickle, the bell housing, intake manifold and oil pan are Metallic Matte Aluminum also Krylon.

It it sprays well, dries in 15 minutes or less and you get big 11oz. can for under 5 bucks at Wally World.

Or you can use Model Master Metalizers. I use them in my airbrush, they have every metal finish you want and they dry instantly. They come in 1/4 ounce bottles and some are buffing and some are flat non buffing and they are already thinned and ready to airbrush.

This is the best next thing if you dont have a air brush, I have a bottle of the steel metalizers , even brushed on it still looks good

If you're replicating 'rough cast' aluminum, I recommend Testors One Coat 'Diamond Dust' lacquer without primer, topped with Dullcote.

When I was doing my son's chopper, my older brother's 1:1 SofTail inspired me; his engine and primary case are in a very cool semi-rough texture, and I tried to replicate it on the wee V.

Krylon Dull Aluminum in their "Metallics" line.

Does everyone use this for Transmissions as well or something else?

OK I got the Matte Aluminum by Krylon....it looks good....but I still think it is way to bright and shiny to be realistic...almost like chrome. I don't know what else to try

Get a can of testors dull coat, that will take care of the shine for ya

I try it....thanks.

Is the Matte Aluminum different from the "dull aluminum"?
