  1. Here it is. My build of George Follmer’s 1973 RC Cola Porsche 917/10. Built using the AMT (Matchbox) 1/32 scale Martini Porsche 917/10 kit, and Indycal Decals. I’m really pleased with how this kit turned out. I always wanted to build a static kit, reflecting the old Aurora AFX slot car I bought from Auto World, of the same car back in 1973. The kit itself was great to build. The detail is pretty good for what it is. The rear cover comes off exposing the engine. But, once it’s on, it’s so tight, and the engine has so little detail, I decided to just leave it on for these photographs. I did cut the decals, so it can come off if it has to. Speaking of decals, the decals from Indycal Decals where great for this kit. They went down beautifully. And snugged down tight in the difficult places using Tamiya’s MarkFit Strong decal setting solution, as recommended on Indycal’s website.

I’m please with the kit. I’m please with the decals. I’m please with the overall results. And I hope your pleased looking at it here too. Now to go find a bottle of Royal Crown Cola. And raise a toast to George Follmer, Porsche, and the great Can Am races of the 1960’s and 70’s.

Found this picture of a build-up online and you can see the rear suspension with its SN-95 Mustang rear axle and stamped lower trailing arms. It's a novel design and certainly a counterpoint to radius rods and coilovers, but the SN-95 Mustangs also have fairly obvious stamped upper trailing arms and the kit has neither representation of these arms OR of a crossmember to which they would attach.

This is the setup on AMT’s Phantom Vicky?

OK, I see what you are referring to about the Model A kit.  I think we are all pretty well aware that Revell added the molded in brackets on the Model A Hot Rod frame as an assist experienced builders assemble their model correctly, not as a representation of the real thing having the rear end solidly mounted to the frame. (They used the same approach on their Foose FD-100 kit)  Many more experienced builders (including myself) cut away those mounting brackets during assembly.

Regarding the lack of a panhard bar - may 1/1 scale hot rod builders use a "triangulated" approach to rear suspension geometry, where the front bars are mounted to the frame in a position closer together, leading out to the rear axle where they are mounted farther apart.  This "triangulation" approach prevents the side to side motion.  Some builders add a panhard bar in addition, but not all.

As for the Phantom Vickie, my point remains unaltered.

Others are, of course, welcome this differently that I do.

I think it's probably best on my end to not comment any further; don't to create a controversy about this.  Best....TB

Any photos of the Phantom Vicky setup? I’m a little unclear what you guys are talking about. And my Phantom Vicky which I build about 20 years ago, is buried and inaccessible at this present time. Making it hard to pull out and look at.

Had a power outage from some storms Monday, power came back last night. I picked up some models this past Sunday at an auto swap meet.

I bought two builds, one was this Mustang II and a Pinto. I gave the pinto to my brother. the kits are still at my brothers house in his garage.

All right. A Mutt II. I really wish Round 2 would reissue MPC’s old Mustang II Cobra II kit. It’s been a long time. Too long.

  5. Looks great. I love the old “Street Is Neat” decal on the back. I remember MPC putting that slogan, in that round shaped form, on or in a lot of their kits back in the early 70’s.

  6. Please don’t boo me for this one. I know it’s totally inaccurate. But, I love it strictly from a nostalgic point of view. And that is the early 70’s Revell, now Atlantis, Jungle Jim Camaro funny car. After the Mean Maverick, another “drag racing” car I love, it was the second funny car I ever built. And the first one in the common 1/25th scale. Again, is a great kit? Most say no. But, it will always be favorite of mine. And I’m glad I had a chance through Atlantis’ reissue to enjoy the kit again.

Hello @unclescott58, Chris is not a show builder; he's a generalist and enthusiast who builds and paints models simply for the love of it. He may or may not research a project ahead of time, he may do something approximating something from his childhood, something a family member/friend once owned/drove, something loosely based on something from a movie or TV show, something based on the box art, or sometimes even by imaginary stories he creates of fictitious owners and vehicle histories. By his own account, Chris is not the be-all end-all of perfection, accuracy, or authenticity. Chris sees something online or envisions something he thinks is neat, does/changes things "as he goes", and in general, is in it more for the sheer fun and speed of putting out TWO build videos per week.

Hope this provides some perspective, thanks.

Oh, I understand all of that. And I’m big fan of Chris for a lot of the reasons you listed. That’s why I tried to not be to harsh in my criticism about his building of Gurney’s Indy car. He did  very good job on the model in general. But, he did say he was going to do some research on colors. Obviously like others of us out here, I’m sure he found little. So he did the best he could. And other than my questioning his choice of painting the engine blue. I think he did a great job. And choosing to paint a Ford engine blue is not a great crime. After all, that’s probably the color most people think of, right or wrong, when it comes to Ford motors.

I will keep watching Chris/HPI guy’s videos on YouTube. I like his builds. I like his sense of humor. He has a very mid-west sense of humor. Which makes sense since he’s from right next door in Wisconsin. His humor, mainly reflected in his comments, remind of several of my male cousins for some reason? And that’s a good thing. In fact, being that he lives fairly close to us over here in Minnesota, I hope someday I’ll get a chance to meet him. Maybe he can to the NNL North sometime, here in Twin Cities. (How about it Chris?) There are several other in the MCCM (Model Car Club of Minnesota) who also enjoy his work, and I’m know would love to meet him too.

Nice build in the end. I’m glad to hear that the decals worked well. I am a little disappointed. He said he going to do some online research to get info for painting. So, I’m wondering where he got the idea that the engine should be paint blue? Engines painted Ford Blue really didn’t start until 1966. One of the restoration videos of the real car shows the engine apart. From what I could see, I did not see any blue paint on it. Other than that, Chris did his normal informative, and fun build. What it may lack in paint accuracy, he makes up in showing us how the kit goes together. And some things to watch out for in building the kit. Over all he did a good job.

  9. Oh! I forgot. What should have been my all time favorite drag racing model, is AMT’s Cal Drag Combo Falcon Funny Car. With the Tim Boyd Racing and Writing decals used as the sponsor for the car. The only reason it did not make it as my favorite, is because the Tim Boyd Racing and Writing decals, and the Driver: Battlin’ Boyd decal will not show up well with the color I choose to paint my Falcon, Galaxie, and trailer. And that is with Tamiya’s TS-54, Light Metallic Blue. Which is really not a very light blue as you can see below. And too close to the color of the decals I mentioned above. Which you can also see below. Bummer!

Now, before people start jumping on me. The above is all done tongue in cheek. Giving a fun little poke at Mr. Boyd, whom I have the greatest respect for. I did seriously debate painting the Falcon white, to use the “Boyd” decals. And it is a shame they would not show up on my Falcon in the color I choose paint it in. Not to embarrass Mr. Body, but it would have been fun to use them.

Unclescott58, I saw your 917 project. That’s cool. Indycals has resin tires also. My turbine car really needed them. The old mpc tires were not in the best shape. Enjoy your build. Here is a pic of my mpc turbine. Indycal decals and their resin tires.

Your Lotus Turbine Car looks great. I too have one in my stash that I need to build one day.

  11. Tim, I have several of your books, including the one on Drag Racing Model Kits. Your books, your writing style, and your knowledge on model cars is second to none. And I can’t disagree with any of what you said in post here.

I’m not the biggest drag racing guy. But, of the kits you mentioned above, my favorite is AMT’s old Double Dragster kit. It’s fun to build. With many fun variations. A classic kit in my view.

I love these builds. Cool subject. My buddy Mike is into these. If you need information there is a classic indycar site on Facebook that has most of the cars in detail. I’m not a fan of Facebook but I used my wife’s account and could not get off the darn thing. So many cool cars ! I built the mpc lotus turbine of Joe Lenords car. If your decals are bad indycals has pretty much every decal for just about every indycar. I bought tires and decals from them. Have fun, I’m a fan of these kits and it’s going to be a blast!!!

Thank you for the info. By the way, if you see the thread I started on the 1/32 scale MPC 917, you’ll see my thoughts on Indycals decals. They are some of the nicest decals I’ve ever used. So far, I’m impressed with their stuff.

At lunch I stopped at an "Antique Mall" near my work.  Been there a couple times before, and have never even been tempted to buy anything.

Seemed like another waste of time, but I decided to go down one more row of vendor booths before I left. Wouldn't you know it, someone was selling a box of five built-up AMT sixties Ford kits: '61 Sunliner and '63, '66, '67, and '68 T-birds.

All are well-built, definitely too nice to call glue bombs.  Fortunately no custom parts on any, except the mags on the '61, which I don't mind.  That one has plastic pins on the chassis, not screws, so I'm suspecting it may be the late sixties reissue?  The '63 body is bare white styrene.

The only one that seems to have any missing parts is the '66, which also has a crunched windshield frame.  Frankly I could care less about that one since its still available as a reissue.  It just came along for the ride with the other four, since it was a set price for the whole box of five.  For the bunch I paid less than the cost of one typical new kit.

I don't know anything about the kit, but I need one! I looked on BoxArtDen and found this image from the Entex 1981 catalog. It's also shown in the 1980 edition.

I've built many of the Entex, later Minicraft 1/16 Model T & Model A Ford kits and found them to make a nice build. I'm sure your Vette is likewise.

If the photo above is what the kit looks like when done. I personally would not be pleased. The thing looks awful. The proportions are way off. I hope yours looks better than that when you get it Mike.
