  1. OMG! 180hp naturally aspirated 4 banger in 1986 would have been a game changer if installed in a passenger vehicle. If Ford have done multiport fuel injection and a turbo on that the 5.0 might had some competition on the sales floor. That would have been a killer SVO motor. Now that would be a great choice for you pace car IMO. Preserve the balance and handling of the car, and be late 70's, early 80's high tech kitsch to boot.
  2. The purple stuff has plenty of intended uses. We have adapted it for our purpose. I use this stuff all the time for detialing my 1:1 cars. I have a few different sprayers with different dilutions for various things. Strong dilution (1:1) works great for removing the old protectant and blooming (browning) on tires, as well as brightening white walls or rwl's. For wheels and general degreasing I use it at 5:1 for cleaning under hood and wheel wells and door jams. A good spray, a few minutes of dwell time agitate with brush and rinse. I always make sure to rinse afterwards. Not sure what the long term effects would be even with it being diluted. I always use gloves when handling this stuff. I looks like it did a nice job on those beat up wheels, but if I had something nice that were clear coated or bare polished aluminum I would stick to a dedicated cleaner for that purpose.
  3. Scott, at least you are honest and admit to the project snowballing, I know the rest of us do it... but hate to admit it
  4. I am assuming this is the compass ink quill method?
  5. Doesn't say on the package, and unfortunately I am in process of moving to my new house so the fun stuff is packed. Hopefully some other member can measure it with a caliper and chime in? Maybe you can pm Kris Morgan here... he is a member
  6. Oh, now I know better than that. With all the reference material available via the web there are no excuses
  7. I have some MAD ditributors, the difference of 6mm and 8mm is scale is visibly impossible to see. The wire gauge matches the wrapping wire I have. I am a DIY guy, but after hearing all the praise of Kris's product I pulled the trigger on a few and they are definitely as nice as everyone says they are.
  8. Like Tom metioned, it depends on the subject matter. Most of the stuff I build would be show cars, or over restored classics in 1:1, so I dab them with a little aluminum, or steel paint on a toothpick, maybe even sometimes gold to represent zinc plated fasteners.
  9. Rob's method is spot on... The tape acts as some protection from errant scuffs or the blade possibly jumping the cut groove. Plus it is much easier to see your cuts
  10. Jeremy John, I remembered this car when I saw your rendering... the pic on the left is the rendering the one on the right is the final product. Back to topic... first and formost for me is inspiration, then writing down my build goals, and then executing each sub assembly for trial fit, and potential scratchbuilding and detailing efforts.
  11. Sadly speed has been mostly reruns of Gears, Chop, Cut, Rebuild (with that no personality host Dan Woods), and NASCAR (which I am not a fan of). Maybe one of the other networks will pick up Gears, and Hot Rod TV.
  12. sounds alot like solvent pop, if it was all over and not isolated to certain spots that rules out fish eyes. OP is it possible for you to post a picture to see what happened to try to diagnose further?
  13. I make time when I can... sometimes I go 6 month to a year with no build time. Life, and occupational requirements definitley take precedence.
  14. The tip with the hole in the sharpie sounds pretty awesome... I will have to try that. I am cheap and use wrapping wire as well
  15. The edge would have the styrene strip aded and then file/ sanded fit to the opening.
  16. Cannot help but wonder if you could get a battery powered nail file for cheap from a Sally beauty supply. Small enough for nails, small enough for models. And probably plenty of replacement grits.
  17. I got the idea for using micro balloons from this link: http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2004/02/stuff_eng_tech_microballoons.htm I just recently tried it, and it seemed to work well for filling deep ejection marks. I have yet to prime over it though. Now I am wondering what issues might crop up with the primer. ...on a side note, we got away from the initial topic, but I am glad the info here has gone beyond the typical "what glue/ filler should I use?" which seems to get beaten pretty hard where the search function was handy, as is Bills way of searching the site on Google
  18. To you guys that posted the links to the pictures... A thousand thank yous! Very helpful
  19. ...fair enough. I have not done extensive research, and you may be very right. The Firefighter chassis could work, but with some mods. Some scratch building some rear half frame rails are going to get it closer to realistic. No way ladder bars would be bolted to a stamped steel pan in a Pinto or Mustang II like the kit portrays. I modified the one sitting on my bench right now because of this reason. OP which car are you trying to replicate and from what year?
  20. Or the magazine features to back his work up as well.
  21. Art appreciate you sharing your experience in all your years of experience in the craft (and all the other folks that have responded as well). I remember in my teenage years (1994) reading SAE and seeing Art's name all the time when resin bodies where mentioned.
  22. I had to go Google this car after watching it. I was curious how a few cars made it past the crusher. Jay Leno's is one of 3 that still run out of 9. Neat stuff. http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/jay-leno/vintage/jay-leno-drives-one-of-the-last-chrysler-turbines
  23. Slammers seem like art expressions. They have their niche and only have to go as far into other details that you want. A popular slammer model builder I remember is Ken Brickell. Some of his stuff is over the top and could never work in the real world but looks cool.
  24. Its an alright show. I dig the cars. I have known about the farm truck for awhile, and Big Chief was on Pinks before. My girlfriend hates the show as it glorifies street racing, which I have been guilty of and she does not approve. It may be scripted but it is sort of close to how the life style is. The ranking thing makes me chuckle... seems like a real life video game. And to all or you that mentioned the cars that compete in Hot Rod Magazines pump gas drags unlimited class... you guys are right. Those are REAL street cars. It would be interesting to see the cars on the show which all but Murder Nova rely on Nitrous to run some 10.5 Outlaw cars with massive boost
