  1. My goodness. Talk about a walk back in time. I built this model sometime in the early 80's, back when I was a kid. I found it on the shelf of a locally owned discount store, a junky type of mom and pop pre-Walmart place, if you will. It was the only place in town that carried models, and while I really wanted the International Harvester tractor model, the VW was priced at about the exact amount of money I had in my pocket. Truthfully, it was probably the last car that I ever built. I remember thinking 'what a piece of junk', and "here I sit building a car that isn't cool or fun". I switched to War Birds after that, and never really looked back.
  2. Thank you for all of the replies. I'm just starting back into the hobby, and I only have about 6 colors right now, all Testors. I'm going at this by buying whatever colors I need at the time. So the next trip to the LHS, Michael's or HL, I might only be buying 4 or 5 colors. You fellow builders are a God send, and a true asset. Building models these days are much easier, thanks to you, than they were back in the mid-80's in small town Indiana. Again, thanks!!!!
  3. I am gearing up for a car build, and I need to buy some paint. Last year, I went to the LHS, which also happens to be a locally owned national franchise. They had one college kid, who was as helpful, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about building cars and war birds. I liked buying from him!!! But, the store manager was not friendly whatsoever, and when he found out that I was "only buying model paint" (and not a $500 RC kit), he became a real turd. I'll most likely lean towards Testor's enamels in the small bottles, and maybe some Floquil if I need it. What is the cheapest way to buy paint from Michael's or Hobby Lobby? Do they have coupons? Can they be used for paint? Thanks in advance!!!!!
  4. Thank you for the replies!!!!! Where can I find these high grit sandpapers? A body and paint shop supply store?
  5. Thanks, everyone!!!! I appreciate the help!!!!!
  6. This is a great thread. I am just getting ready for a build, and wanted to make realistic looking hoses. Thank you!!!!!
  7. What grit should I use for sanding the primer coat? Thank you in advance!!!!!!!!
  8. Sorry. I think the kit is molded in soft yellowish plastic. I owned one of these kits last year, and sold it on ebay...and then bought another last week. The kit should be here Wednesday. I have no idea what type of paint that I'll use. There is a good chance that I'll use Testor's MM in the baby rattle can. I am hoping to get an airbrush up and running sometime, but am feeling a little intimidated buy the set up and clean up. (Yes, I know that is a dumb way to think.)
  9. Wow!!! Nice job on the rack!!!! It sure beats the tool box and tool tray that I'm using.
  10. I an looking forward to building a 1:16 AMT '64 Mustang. Originally, I thought it would be best in a final color of Springtime Yellow, even though it Springtime Yellow didn't appear until '65, IIRC. Now I am leaning towards the bright red that Ford offered. What color of primer would I use for those respective colors? I am building on a tight budget, and am hoping that I can use the same color primer that is used on an early Model T in a final coat of black. I am strongly leaning towards using Plasticote, since that is what Dr. Cranky suggested. Thanks in advance!!!!
  11. I just bought the same AMT kit. Definitely looking forward to the build.
  12. Nice work!!!!
  13. Wow!!!! Stunning workmanship!!!!!
  14. Well, dang it. After much contemplation, I decided to buy the Doctor's book. I am fascinated with building junkers. One reason I quit building cars when I was a teenager was because, at the time, back in the 80's, no one was building rusty cars, and everyone I talked to acted like I was a 3 eyed monster when I talked about weathering a car. I switched to military tanks and WWII aircraft, and never looked back. I did attempt building a junker sometime around '94, but it was pretty much an utter failure because I was only using the paints I had on hand that was left over from my teenage years. I just tried to buy the good Doctor's book, and it is sold out. I am disappointed. I have a kit in the mail right now, and was getting super excited about this build. Back to square one.
  15. I am returning to the hobby after a 25 year hiatus. In fact, it has probably been 30 years since I've built a car, save the Corvette my daughter and I built for her last 4-H project. When primering and painting a car body, what do you do about the inside of the shell? Do you primer and paint it too? The kit we are building is the 1:16 AMT '64 Mustang. I'll most likely be using rattle cans. Thanks in advance!!!!
  16. I had to vote box stock since I am coming back to the hobby after 25 years. I hope you all are going to be patient with me as I learn and relearn all the tricks.
  17. Oh, Doc, I forgot to mention that I tried to find the book via inter-library loan. Of all the libraries that participate in the inter-library system that she was using, there is a single library...I am not making this up...in Spain that has your book.
  18. Dr. Cranky, I tried looking for the book in the surrounding libraries, so I tried our local library since I was supposed to be there anyway. I asked the head librarian about buying the book, and she looked at me like I was high on crack. You see, our local library wanted to build a new $36 million dollar facility in the middle of a flood plain, and then spent $150,000 on a marketing campaign trying to sell the idea to the public. They then exercised an option on some land, at a reported $100,000, and an untold amount on architectural drawings, scale models, and the like. In the mean time, the library tossed about 1/2 of the books in the stacks, trying to pretend that there was a real 'need' for a new library. The shelves look like a ghost town...I kid you not. The new library went to vote last fall, and the public voted it down 3 to 1. Now the library says that they don't have enough money to pay the employees, and may have to shut down to save money, and therefore, have not a dime to buy any new books.
  19. I am returning to the hobby after a 25 year hiatus. I just bought a 1/16 AMT 1964 Ford Mustang. This will be my daughter's 4-H entry...and I, um, er....she wants to win. We are going to make this a rusty junker, Doc Cranky style...but I have a loooooooong way to go.
  20. That is a good idea, Doc. I might try it, but my local library isn't too keen on ordering books that their customers want. Sad, but true.
  21. Thanks, Doc!!!! The very day that you started a thread about this, I had the AK website pulled up, and literally, was about to hit the 'buy' button. I was interrupted, and thought that I would buy it later in the day. When I got back to the computer, I checked the forum before going back to AK's site, and saw your new thread. Thank you for getting back to me. I still don't know which book to buy. Money isn't growing on trees around here, especially this month. Telling the wife that I now want to spend the better part of a Benjamin on two books really wouldn't be prudent or wise. Again, thanks!
  22. Again, THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLIES!!!!!! I'd love to hear more, so please feel free to post. Email sent. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
