Local shop closing - Sad days indeed.
jbwelda replied to Qwit Pushin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
yep i have been a happy customer of riverside hobbies for 20 years or so and am very disheartened to see them close up. its gonna be university hardware in berzerkley or the interwebs from now on and unfortunately that requires planning. cant just pop into riverside hobbies for the great selection of supplies and paints not to mention a whole boatload of car kits. very sorry to see them close. -
Any feedback on this paint booth
jbwelda replied to RTK434's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
75- 150$ SHIPPING? you got to be kidding, even to canada. doesnt that thing fold up? i would not buy a booth for 250$ and then expect to pay half that to have it shipped. just sayin...sounds like gouging to me. that said a pace booth is on my christmas (to myself) list. -
was the 348 the same block as the 409? i always thought they were, just the displacement difference from boring and/or stroking? i agree with you though that a street mill would probably be more appropriate. tri-power does come to mind.

you know i went back and searched for the article i cited above about the exploding paint room and i found this. i dont think this is the same story i was thinking of but it is similar. the one i remember seemed to me to include photos of the aftermath...a scorched wall and some other rubble. quote: I found this on the Model Truck discussion board. We’ve all heard stories of this happening. Anthony encouraged me to forward this. From: MTDG@yahoogroups.com [mailto:MTDG@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Anthony Oteri Sent: Thursday, February 18, 2010 6:07 PM To: MTDG Subject: [MTDG] Spray booth story, sad story I know this topic has come up in the past but it needs to be discussed again. I friend of mine built his own spray paint booth from a kitchen stove exhaust hood that he was using in his garage. Last night he was using it when it caught on fire. He has burns on his chest, arms, face and head. His wife told me he has no eyebrows, eye lashes or hair left on his head. He also wears contact lenses which melted in his eyes from the fire. He's in pretty bad shape and was transferred to a Shriners burns hospital in Boston. He was using Testors rattle can enamel on an airplane model that he was building. His wife told me she herd a boom sound then a scream. When she opened the door into the garage his shirt was on fire. Luckily there daughter's boy friend was there and he used a fire extinguisher on him to put out the fire. If anyone is using a home made spray booth don't use it anymore. The fan motor windings are exposed and will ignite paint fumes and vapors. You need to use a motor this is in a vapor proof or explosion proof case. This guy Dennis is 47 years old and is a pipe fitter by trade, ironically he installs fire sprinklers. I didn't intend to ruin anyone's dinner, but I hope it may help save yourself from getting hurt, or worse. Sorry for the gloom and doom, be careful! Anthony end quote that was in february 2010. i presume these present booths dont have any issues despite those dire warnings...lawyer bait in other words. -
Any feedback on this paint booth

i recently bought an airbrush and all i have shot through it so far has been water diluted india ink. i havent progressed on to real paint because of this very issue. i am using a second bathroom as my spray booth as such and unfortunately it only has a ceiling fan which is totally inadequate for the job. i was thinking i could try to find a kitchen stove top with fan and then duct that out a window, hopefully for low bucks, or i could go the bucks and buy a booth and duct it out the window as well. that video embedded up there pretty much convinces me i need one. i love seeing the "in use" photos of similar booths in the real setting. so mike, i cant really make out your booth in that photo you posted. do i see it there in the middle section of that bookcase thing there? and the ducting is out the back into the tube exiting the window? do you get much overspray or does it pretty much stay there and get sucked up by the exhaust fan? i remember there was a post here some years back either by the guy who it happened to or maybe he saw it somewhere and reposted it here, of an actual explosion caused by a fan and a solvent-rich environment. i would imagine the cure is to not let it build up by having adequate exhaust strength. -
does or has anyone ever made a 2004 Monte Carlo?
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
thanks folks, diecast is not my game but looks like selection is limited otherwise. -
for some reason this design has been looking very nice to me on the street, especially lowered down a bit with some fatter tires all around. of course i have looked around for a model to build of it, or even a diecast, but havent found much. any clues? seems to me like AMT or someone would have jumped on this instant classic design.

The model honey hole,Mabey
jbwelda replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i would go there and tell them all the story about being in the house back then and maybe embellish it just a bit to make you seem closer to your relatives, then tell them how your favorite uncle passed away when he was young but the models got packed up there. you were hoping maybe some of the models you and him were building together (right before the tragic accident) were still there because it would mean so much to your family dont you know... well maybe dont lay it on that thick but a little theatre probably wouldnt hurt. but if they have been there long they probably disposed of them already. but it dont hurt to ask. -
hey what happened to TDR?

ok a little bit more progress, actually i am about to epoxy the front axle on and then the grille and then do some detailing and fiddling and call this mess done. the more i look at it the less enthusiastic i am about it, to be honest. but i am fighting hard to get it done and off the bench! the problem is the front tires/wheels are too high profile to let the front end sit down any further than it is. oh well, anyhow, moving on... a first attempt at an exhaust system, when i couldnt find my solder and all problems started looking like a nail: but that wasnt looking good so next day i managed to find my big solder and make a nicer looking pipe. was thinking about putting a turned aluminum muffler on there but there just wasnt enough room. those gaps on the bottom of the doors arent really that bad (yes, they are that bad): onward and upward and hopefully not into the wastebasket. sigh.

i always loved those 58s especially lowered all down with some custom touches like sculpted accents, caddy taillights and fender skirts. and of course a 409. and of course with the pearl fogged paint job. you got that one under control so i am looking forward to seeing what else happens!

right on junkman, and well stated. physics is a study in unempirical, counter-intuitive thinking. i got that from the one semester i subjected myself to its study. its great to see it being applied in real life. -
Cheap paint to practice airbrushing
jbwelda replied to lukeeluciano's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
im not sure there is any paint that is "cheap" anymore but how about fingernail polish at the 99 cent store or similar kind of place? i am just getting into an airbrush so i am in the same spot...i think you can get acrylics cheap but not sure they spray the same as the laquers and enamels i am going to be using. so far i have just been using india ink to get used to controlling the brush. -
can we mention the other forum? for ab ers

Anyone have any tips for TAMIYA spray paint?
jbwelda replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
indeed...i was going to say: tips? warm the can in warm water, spray and be amazed. a couple of colors work better than others but other than that its all gravy. the clear isnt really a "wet look" clear though, if you want wet look use model master gloss coat, it wont hurt the tamiya if you spray a light coat or two first. -

let me see if i got this right: >most air brush problums you can fix right here. period at end of sentence does wonders >this a most excellent place to learn..get advise .. etcetera etc etc then this makes sense >but the 40 year experts, the do anything guys, are on the "air brush forum". a couple of additions and substitutions there cleaned things up. but you dont tell us what "air brush forum"...typically useful advise like that is accompanied by a link to said forum. >they bliud utra quite air compresors out of old refrigerators ect ect. couple of misspellings but otherwise easy to see the point, though that "etc etc" style gets old after awhile. like harry sez you can get them cheap (try harbor freight, just got a nice 3 gal tank one for about 50 bucks) on the other hand i do see the attraction of building your own and like you point out, they are ultra quiet, a far cry from the harbor freight model. >great place to learn i assume you mean the air brush forum. your post was informative by the way once you parse it out...just try to clean it up a little thanks mcf writing police. -

i was just messing around with that the other day and i also noticed it was very finicky and unpredictable. i think it has something to do with the pixel resolution or maybe the maximum size of the photo file. but i finally got it to work with a less than optimum choice, but my favorite artist nonetheless.

Brian: did you post finished pics somewhere?

>Better not use USPS when you send abroad have used USPS exclusively for foreign (from the usa) shipments and have never...never...never had a problem. but anecdotal evidence is no evidence at all...but its been my experience. those courior services are just money sinks if you ask me...lots of $ and unless you send them the very expensive way, really poor handling of your package.
