  1. yes Andy I was going to mention that the concepts were being freely mingled here and perhaps they don't fit together. by the way, since it was brought up above, I don't really consider "Peoples Choice" to be a "major" award. oftentimes the winners of PC are the best in the show but oftentimes its much easier to fool a crowd than to impress a knowledgeable judge. For PC, "bigger is better" is generally a good watchword, regardless of level of build or detail. jb
  2. wow some great galleries of photos from the past few days. heres one from the swap meet (which by the way seemed to have a lot of really kool halibrand front wheels)... what the heck is this anyway? two door Chevy wagon but its not a nomad? I don't think I have ever seen one like this oops, try here: http://bangshift.com/gallery/march-meet-2014-thursday-swap-meet.html?pid=177018 jb
  3. nice gallery of photos of engines, great reference for wiring and plumbing: http://bangshift.com/gallery/march-meet-2014-all-engines-gallery.html?pid=176731 jb
  4. I remember I found a 20$ bill on the floor of woolworths in St Louis probably Christmas of 1963, and I didn't hesitate a minute to lead my mom over to the model department where I pointed out the Big T and that was the end of that 20! but like art says interest kinda waned by 65 or so, probably due to expense but also complexity and difficulty of getting the things to hold together using tube glue and the patience of a 12 year old. oh and the display space if and when... jb
  5. good score! I am surprised to hear these are on clearance these days; seems like only yesterday they were reissued! jb
  6. Awesome doesn't even cover it! did I miss that Bugatti or it this the first time its been shown here? jb
  7. that looks great and that is a great story to go with it. my experience back in 1961 was very similar to yours: I just couldn't fathom how you blend those nose and tail pieces in with that putty stuff. and the result showed that! jb
  8. that is so excellent! your paint is gorgeous! that nailhead is super! and that engine stand you made up there from the sprue: I totally salute you! fantastic! jb
  9. Ummm, could you repeat the question please? jb
  10. >Why don't they just make a simple rule... any model may compete in this event ONE TIME ONLY. >The people putting on the contest can keep track of the entries, and the next year they check last year's >entries to see if anyone is trying to enter the same model again. and what happens the third year then harry? kludges like that never really work and just lead to a lot of extra paperwork and frustration. I built the model, I can show the model. and if I want to enter it in the same contest I entered it in last year and the year before and the year before...well that should be alright. though without more work there should be no reason for it to fare any better than in the past and in fact if your old models are anywhere as good as what youre building now, then you got a building problem not a showing problem. so basically its a self defeating proposition and especially if you have to pay to enter, enter on sport! now in the case of major award winners, its totally bad form to enter that car in that contest again at least for some number of years and ideally declaring it for display only. if the awards garnered so far are minor: best interior, motor, paint, etc then I don't see any problem re-entering it another year. limiting this sort of thing causes all sorts of problems though: imagine you entered a new build in a contest and win best in your class but maybe not best of show. maybe that was because there was an unusual influx of entries from out of the area, maybe a visiting genius at work, and your best was totally outclassed. but that was not the norm and the next year you only saw the more local entries and the same entry that faded into the background last year now stands out like a diamond in a field. its really not fair to exclude that model from entry simply because of the best of class win, when his entry is rightly best of show this year. the luck of the draw among entries is too heavy a factor. same with prejudiced judges and a host of other possibilities to outright exclude entries based on winning some major but not THE major award seems kind of unfair too. then that leads to endless lists of entries qualified for which awards and endless headaches. this is all pretty theoretical to me though as I don't really seriously enter "contests" too much. I just don't really put much stock in the outcomes most of the time. jb
  11. it might be worth dropping in there for the primer then because that is what I use and the price is astronomical. so I assume (hope) you mean 40% off of 7$ = about 4$?
  12. the cycle fenders are very nice jb
  13. heres a couple pics of the offy motor that I used in a project: jb
  14. they must have electronic cash registers and they enter a product number or code...so its just a matter of the front end on the beast behind it. but my main concerns would be: do they have a good selection of Tamiya paints and where can I get that coupon? jb
  15. that aurora Ferrari box art belongs in the thread about which sort of box art do you prefer; here it would fall into the totally deceptive category when you eyeball the contents and that misshaped body. talk about your royal letdown. 1 more vote for actual built model on the cover! jb
  16. first off no one makes any money when you use those 40% off coupons; they are to draw you into the store and get you to buy other stuff. what used to be called a loss leader. if you walk in there every time with a coupon that you use on your entire purchase, the marketing people do not put a high value on your patronage. if all modelers come in there with that scenario pretty soon they don't value customers of those items (models). you might be surprised how closely they track stuff exactly like this to figure out what to stock and what not to stock. its what I hate about these places, they are the Walmart of hobby shops and that means on pretty much all levels. that includes mercilessly gathering as much data about you as they can and then selling it to whomever they can. its one way they help increase their profit. those coupons might well be part of that, I don't know because ive never personally participated or even stepped foot in a hobby lobby. but I may soon just for the sake of further investigation. second, IS there a place one could say has a "lot of model builders" in it? I kind of doubt it, in fact I would guess model building, such as it is, is spread through the USA demographic pretty evenly. I know people rich and poor who build models and I don't think you could identify them by any other characteristic. jb
  17. Might have to make the 2+ hour (note disclaimer) drive to go there in person. They usually have a pretty good model show/contest too. jb
  18. Chalk up another one for the League of Concerned Mothers. "Is it safe?" jb
  19. well then keep looking around until one comes up for 50.00; meanwhile those with the wherewithal will be paying what they bring and you will be completing models and buying your own beer. jb
  20. to answer the question about selling parts though, that sort of thing requires a whole payment structure be set up and at least someone available to answer calls and presumably take orders over the phone. and then charge like 10$ shipping for a part that presumably would cost like maybe 5$ or something to make it worth the while. that might buy you the sprue the part/parts you want came on or something, but with the expected landslide of calls (sarcasm) it would be a very fast money losing proposition. companies like revell aren't set up for retail sales themselves; they operate their warranty/problem department as a commitment to their customers. just introducing the taking of actual money into the equation causes large leaps in security and financial obligations to make it not worthwhile for a small time deal. plus they figure in the case of needing spares for some other build etc you should just buy another kit. jb
  21. >At our store they won't put the new kits out until the clearance kits are all sold. that's completely nuts. they actually do that at a Hobby Lobby? what earthly reason could they have for doing it? aren't they missing sales of new releases that are instead taking up space in the back room, waiting for some dead stock to grow legs? Man that's messed up if its true. just sayin'. jb
  22. don't plan your retirement yet there Dwight, those are very common and go for maybe up to a hundred bucks in the shape you describe. obviously this current auction was not for an ordinary car. the starting price was 700$. there were 38 bids from 13 distinct bidders. the price shot up immediately after the first bid and then cooled off a bit, then increased spectacularly on the day of the ending, in fact the last hour of the auction, as mentioned above and as often happens. there is no question from that bidding pattern that the item is pretty highly sought after and attracts a pretty wide audience. pretty darn amazing...I personally wouldn't even think it would go for the opening bid but there you go... jb
  23. so have any of the math wizzes here taken the dimensions I supplied above and scaled them up to real life and then contemplated a real ignition wire? interested to know because my bet is that the RC ignition wire is the closest to actual high tension ignition cable and the regular closest to normal stock wiring. and the detail wire is for use in smaller wiring gauge wiring applications like low tension wires to the volt regulator etc oh and naw your website isn't messed up or anything...I have NO IDEA how that last post of mine ended up like that. jb
  24. it would probably be best to save a search on ebay for it and see if parts cars come up. I do come across them occasionally. also check with fred stern (sorry don't know contact info I used to mailorder from him) because he gets in lots of odd kits and parts and may well be able to help you. its too bad someone doesn't repop these and the Hussein as AMT doesn't seem to be interested in the job jb
  25. Sounds like a great way to burn down your house. I would keep a careful eye on it for the first few times and not leave it unattended in a room. maybe I am just paranoid from narrowly escaping third world deathtraps. jb
