I seldom build an out of the box model, so the first thing I do is deside what I want to do with the model. I then set down and think about what parts I will need to build it. The next step is to check out which models will be donating parts to the build, and check to make sure those parts will give me the look that I am after with my build, I test fit them using a dot of white glue so they can be taken apart easily without damage. I know this takes a lot of time but it will pay off with a better build. Also at this stage I choose any after market parts I want to use and test fit them. After all of the parts of the build have been chosen, I clean all of them and remove all mold lines and othe imperfections, do all of the Body Glazing, and sand the parts starting with 400 grit, then 600, then 800, then 1000, then 1200, and finally 1500 grit. I then spay all of the small parts, and bag them by colour,I place the engine parts, and running gear in their ow zip locks. I then spay the frame and body with primer, let them cure and then sand them with 400-2400 grit wet paper, use a light touch when doing this sanding, you want to remove all imperfections without sanding through the primer. I then wash all of the parts with dish detergent, rense them making sure all of the soap and sanding dust has been remove. I use my airbrush with the compresser set at 100psi to blow dry the parts making sure that all moisture is removed. The model is now ready for it's final colour coats, I use the same methods as Donn Yost for painting my models. Donn Has a very good DVD available on painting that I highly recomend! I assemble my model in which ever order it takes to get the best build with the easiest access to the areas that I am working on, I only use the instructions as guid for deferent sub assemblies. I alway test fit each part before adding glue. CHEERS!

Castrol Super Clean, or Formula 409 Cleaner will work just as well! Any of the Purple Cleaners will work. I have used Alcohol 91% to clean bodies also, but it takes longer. CHEERS!

I received my Contest Issue on Monday, and I found the coverage to be outstanding. All of the pictures are clear and in focus. The models were well chosen to represent the different shows, and show good to great craftsmanship. The model builds show that thought and planning went into them. Several of the models have extreme Detailing, Great paint work, and Body Work. Overall this years issue should inspire the readers to do their best at all aspects of Model Car Building! CHEERS!

revell 5 window question
Ragnar replied to Phatsamurai's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The Hemi is more like the Early Hemi engines. The placement of the Distributor and the dual water outlets fit the design of the older engines like the 331Ci. The Heads are incorrect for any Hemi and so are the Headers, but this is easy to correct with the Head and Valve cover kits from R&M co. of Maryland. Norm also has correct over the frame style Headers For the Revell Hemi engines in the 5 Window kits, he also has Manifolds with Carbs for them: Two Fours, Four Deuces, Six Deuces, and Eight Deuces. In 1960 while searching Salvage Yards, I found an old wooden Runabout inboard boat with the strangest looking Engine I had eaver seen. It appeared to be a V8 of some kind it had a Ford Flathead style Block with a twin bulb style distributor, but there were no visable sparkplugs, and the wiring was all gone. It had a high rise manifold for twin 2 barrel carbs, but one was missing, the one that was there had parts missing. Laying in the bilge was a strange looking tear drop shaped aircleaner that was so covered with ###### I couldn't be sure whether it was all there or what shape it was in. I was intriged by this engine, so when the guy running the yard said I could have it all for five bucks I bought it. When I got it all cleaned up I found that What I had was a 41 mercury flathead that was actually in good rebuildable condition, no cracks and the cylinders had never been bored. The reason there were no visible spark plugs, as I found out when my uncle looked at it, was because it had a pair of thickston head covers to keep the plugs from shorting when water hit the engine in a marine istalation. The Manifold and Aircleaner which also was in pretty good condition was also made by thickston. The Motor needed a new distributor, starter, generator, oil pump(solid sludge), and fuel pump, but it was still quiet a find for that five bucks. It became the engine in my first Roadster. I really enjoyed the way people kept trying to figure out that strange looking Flathead! CHEERS!

Nice Job. It will handle better if you solder the drop arm solid. How do you like that chassis? It is very like the Chassis I was building in the mid 60s, I mostly build steel pan chassis today! CHEERS!

I like the paint job, and that Highrise with two Fours is BAD! CHEERS!
