Constant paint can bulges, what to do?
StevenGuthmiller replied to aurfalien's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This shouldn't happen @ 90 degrees. I heat my cans before painting too & I've never seen this happen. warming the cans definitely helps the paint lay down better. If you plan on cooling them, expect the paint to not perform as well. If I had to guess, I would say you've just had an "unlucky" streak of bad cans. I've had spray paint cans sit in my garage for years where the temperature can exceed 120 degrees in the summer & fall to 30 degrees below zero in the winter, & I've never had one pop like that. Constant paint can bulges, what to do?
StevenGuthmiller replied to aurfalien's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've never, ever had a can bulge on me like that. I don't think shaking has anything to do with it. It has to be something with storage conditions. Temperature or possibly altitude? Steve -
I don't think I'd go through all that hassle. I was only wondering. with that strange looking "grille" on the drivers side, I thought it almost looked like it could be a dash board out of something. Just thought it would be interesting to find out what the source was. Regardless, it's a great looking model!! Steve

Paint questions

You can use the Testors clear lacquers over pretty much anything. They won't hurt enamel paint. Steve -
When did color fall out of favor?
StevenGuthmiller replied to Lunajammer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks pretty good to me. But at least you had other options. Steve -
I love it Tommy! 1961 was a great year, especially for GM. The color is terrific! I do have a couple of questions though. First, what kit did the up top come from? I know the AMT '61 Buick kit came with that dopey "half top" instead of a proper up top. It fits pretty well. Second, I'm a little baffled by the firewall. It looks nothing like the firewall that came with my '61. It doesn't really even look like a firewall. I don't even see a master cylinder. Not trying to be critical. I'm just curious where it came from. Overall, it's a very pretty Buick!! Steve

I like silver, but when it's 4 of the 8 color choices offered by a manufacturer, it's a kind of overkill. Steve -

I agree 100%. And the number of colors offered were huge compared to today. The late 60s & early 70s cars offered a large array of colors as well. I believe there were nearly 30 paint color options available for the '70 Plymouths for example. Now you're lucky if you get 6 or 8. Steve -

My last truck like that was a Dodge Ram in '03. it was silver with a dark gray interior. Steve -

This is one of my biggest pet peeves! The last half dozen new cars that the wife & I have purchased in the past 20 years have basically given us the option of black, gray or tan. Boy, I can hardly contain my excitement! We always try to opt for the tan if possible if for no other reason but to brighten things up in there a bit. But of course with everything being bundled into "packages" these days, those tan interiors are only available with certain colors, because as we all know, tan does not go with blue. I think if I have to live with another gray interior in a car, I may just slit my wrists!! Steve -
Exactly. I don't dwell on what I've spent on a particular kit either. Sometimes it may bother me for a moment when I think I may have spent more than I should have on a kit, but the feeling quickly fades when the excitement of building it kicks in. I have no regrets about what I've spent on any model I've ever bought. I figure it's only money & I might as well spend it on something I love. Steve

1965 Plymouth Fury. Update, 7/27, WHEW!
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I'm hoping that now I'll be able to continue with this project. Things didn't work out great, but I hope well enough to finish. I have virtually ZERO paint left, so it will have to be good enough. By the time I got to the final color coat, I was so short of paint that the hood got a little "grainy" but I should be able to work that out with the clear coats. As long as the color matches, I'm not too worried about getting it shined up. Steve -
Sharp Al! And you couldn't have picked a better color! Excellent! Steve

I think anyone who knows me knows that I will build absolutely anything, no matter how old or rare it is. If I don't plan on building it, I won't buy it. Just my "short list" alone includes several MIB kits. None of them are sealed, but I still would probably build them even if they were. I have an AMT '67 Ford Galaxie, an MPC '66 Bonneville, an AMT '62 Bonneville, a Johan '67 Chrysler & Johan '63, '65 & '67 Plymouth Furys, All in mint condition & all slated to be built within the next year or two. The '65 Fury is on the bench right now. I do have kits that I know I'll never build, but it has more to do with little interest than saving them for posterity. Steve

Thanks so much guys! Every time I think this thread is long dead & buried, it seems to rise from the grave! Not that I'm complaining! I'm glad that there are still some of you enjoying it! Thanks to everyone!! Steve

Very nice Al! I built the same kit in the same colors, but in reverse. I still think the '59 was the most handsome of the 3 years. Good work! Steve
-
That's pretty cool Al! I would have never guessed that those colors would work together, but if you're looking for attention, you will surely get it! Steve

Looks spot on! My wife drives ours around like that all of the time! Drives me nuts! Wouldn't want to mess up the hair though. Steve

Any idea how to "tint" windows
StevenGuthmiller replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I think he's done both Harry. I can see a very light green tint on the glass overall. Do you think it would be possible to dye the strip across the top & then the rest of the glass? Usually, I shoot a strip across the top with acrylic paint & then spray the entire glass with Testors "Window Tint". It works pretty well but I would prefer a green overall tint rather than "smoke". 1960 Lincoln color choices
StevenGuthmiller replied to gtx6970's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Me neither. But if it helps, the same color was available on other Ford products that year. The T-Bird color was the same code but called "Springdale Rose". I also found this pic of another model painted that color. A bad pic, but you get the drift. MCW doesn't have it in their catalog anyway. Most likely you would have to have someone mix it for you. But they do carry a Cadillac color called "Persian Sand" that looks extremely close. I doubt if anyone would ever know the difference. Steve
