I consider it PC when you feel like you have to walk on egg shells for fear of offending someone. I think this post illustrates that fear & why it's become so prevalent in our society. I can't do this, it might offend person A. I can't show that, it may offend person B. Exactly what is acceptable to "everyone". I don't know, do you? It's perfectly acceptable to me to have people post their photos on my threads. Seems it's acceptable to Tom. Are we wrong? Are you right? I personally am very tired of trying to decipher what is acceptable & what is not to every individual on the planet. This is a "public forum". It is not our "private space" We can not expect to not have our space encroached upon. As I don't wish to start another testosterone fueled pissing match, I'll just leave it at that & conclude by saying, I have no problem with photos on my threads. I am not offended, I don't feel that you're being un-courteous by doing so. I guess I'm just an oddball. Steve

I agree Tom. I think it's a little silly too. I have posted photos of my builds on other peoples threads, mostly WIP threads to show what I did with the same kit. My motivation was the fact that almost all of the kits that I've built in the past 5 years have been vintage kits, & I personally would like to see anything that anyone has done with those types of kits. I guess From what I'm hearing, I was mistaken. Even a photo of a build to show something as small as a paint color or a particular technique that was used to achieve a certain affect is always welcome to me. These forums are supposed to be about discussion & interaction, & as far as I'm concerned, a picture is worth a thousand words. It never even crossed my mind that anyone would be offended or feel that their "thunder" was being stolen by having a photo posted on their thread. So, in the future, I will refrain from posting anything on another persons thread without permission. I guess the PC society that we are living in today has infiltrated pretty much every aspect of our lives, why not here as well? Steve

Orange peel eegads
StevenGuthmiller replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Lacquer dries extremely quickly. So quickly that what you're seeing is the paint has dried in the air before it reached the surface of the model, hence the "graininess". Spray a little closer & it should eliminate the problem. Getting the correct distance down so that it becomes habit can be one of the most difficult aspects of painting. I've been painting for 40+ years & I still have issues on occasion. Steve -
Orange peel eegads
StevenGuthmiller replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Once the texture is sanded out, as long as you're using the same color, you can just shoot another coat or 2 over it. No need to re-prime. Steve -
I think that you're going to find the "pulse" is inconclusive. I'm guessing a good portion of us, (at least me) have never really thought about it. Being as your not likely to stop it from happening, maybe for those that it bothers, a "warning" of some sort at the original posting to "please refrain from posting your builds on this thread" might be in order. I guess if it bothers the OP, it should be his responsibility to try to stop it from taking place. As i said, it never bothered me, so if anyone wants to post something on one of my threads, fire away. Although, as some here have stated, a little relevance to the original post would be in order. I guess I can't think of a time when that was not the case for me. Steve

A/C while painting
StevenGuthmiller replied to CarLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In Minnesota it can be very hot & humid all summer. It can be either paint in the air conditioning, or not at all! I do it all of the time with no problems. Steve -
Orange peel eegads

Doesn't look like orange peel to me. Looks like the paint is "grainy". Most likely caused from holding the can too far away from the body. Steve -
Pontiac - 1965 2+2 - First build in 40 years
StevenGuthmiller replied to RestoModGuy's topic in Model Cars
Beautiful! Can't wait to see the transformation! These '65s are really beautiful cars! I just sent out chrome for re-plating on a '66 & a '67 Bonneville, & now after seeing your build, I can't wait to get started on one of them. Steve -
Pontiac - 1965 2+2 - First build in 40 years
StevenGuthmiller replied to RestoModGuy's topic in Model Cars
Fantastic work!! But oh how I loath that style of wheels! Just a personal opinion, but the 8 lugs would look so much nicer on this otherwise beautiful "mostly" stock build! Some period mags like a set of Cragar SS wheels would look nice as well. Steve -
Ron's '60 has never bothered me either, & I've seen it a lot! Ron & I have the same interests & build style, so it shows up quite frequently on my threads. I just figure, we're all individuals & have our own thing. Why should it bother me? I've always considered myself a pretty laid back person. Not many little things like this get under my skin. Steve

Thanks Thomas! Boy, you're really digging up the oldies! Steve

I think that they need to have "mom" replace the gorilla! Steve

You're right Harry. Now that I look at it, it looks a little narrow. Even though the Franklin Mint car is 1/24th, the Johan '61 is 1/25th scale. Looks narrow compared to that as well. Still looks awfully nice though! Steve

Is it me or is it my builds?
StevenGuthmiller replied to 72 Charger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think what most people are referring to when they say that they build for themselves Erik, is that they are not building to compete or to gain approval from anyone else. At least that's what I think of when I say it. For instance, when I'm building an old annual kit with a "slab" chassis or a 3 piece interior, a lot of guys would swap chassis or do something different with the interior, especially if they're going to enter it in a show, even though they may not prefer to do it. I generally build them as they are. I understand that many of us would do those things regardless, but I build "for myself" with the intention of them going directly from the bench to my shelf & really have no thought of what anyone thinks of them. Yes, I do enjoy the comradery & the back & forth of these forums, but it does not influence the way I build. I think it would be difficult for anyone who builds for competition to claim that they are "building for themselves" or are at least not influenced by that situation. Steve -
Very cool! I've always liked the look of the '60 over the '59. A little more subdued. You have to admit, the '59 was a bit on the "gaudy" side. Steve

I'm sure what Harry is referencing here is a left turn at an intersection where there are no left turn signals, (arrows). In that situation the left turn essentially becomes a "yield" situation. You may turn left when there is no more oncoming traffic. But a smart driver will move partially out into the intersection & wait there for either the oncoming traffic to clear, or for the light to turn yellow or even red to allow you to turn left. If you remain at the crosswalk & oncoming traffic is heavy, when the light changes, you're stuck there for another cycle of the light. And then possibly another, & another & another. As I stated, there are many intersections where I live with no designated left turn signal & heavy enough oncoming traffic during rush hour where you could possibly sit for many cycles of the light before being able to make your turn. In the mean time, if your not smart enough to get your butt out into the intersection, you're backing up traffic & creating all kinds of havoc behind you. It's not a traffic rule per-say, but it's just common sense to keep traffic moving & to keep from having the guy behind you jump out of his car & bludgeon you to death! Steve

I still amazes me that none of the kit producers have seen fit to do this generation of Ford truck since the originals. It just seems like a giant no brainer! Steve

Question about tape
StevenGuthmiller replied to Chris Evans's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Didn't even realize it was still available. I haven't used it in years because I thought it was long gone. If I recall correctly, it did work pretty well. Steve -
I agree. I've never intended to "hijack" anyone's thread. I guess we can't all know what may or may not "offend" someone else. I've always welcomed anything & everything that anybody cared to post on any of my threads. Whether it's posting their build of the same model to show me how they did it, reference photos or whatever. As far as I'm concerned, you don't learn anything by limiting information. So let me just end by saying, if it bothers people, I will refrain from doing it in the future. But I welcome all comers on any of my threads! Post to your hearts content! I want to see any information that you have to offer! Steve

Now we're talking! Amazing how a little foil can bring a build to life. I know what you mean about the interior! What color would be appropriate? I labored a little over that when I built mine. I finally went with a "multi-tone" look with lavenders & white. Not the best looking interior I ever did, but it looked ok. From what I've been able to find, (which is very limited) a common interior color for the "Lido Lavender" paint would have been a sort of gray, black & white combo. Steve

Question about tape
StevenGuthmiller replied to Chris Evans's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks Scott. I don't proclaim myself to be the "tape master". All I can do is share my experiences over many years of trial & error. Regular masking tape can do funny things, so I just use it very sparingly only when necessary. There are better options out there, & although they may be a bit more expensive, I personally think they are well worth it. Steve -
Is it me or is it my builds?
StevenGuthmiller replied to 72 Charger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Dave, you have to have a thicker skin my man. First of all, you have to remember, there's about a million "works in progress" going on here at any given time. I had to go back & look, but you haven't posted any progress on the Buick since March 7th! That's well over 2 months ago! Of course the interest has dried up, people have forgotten about it. As far as the Charger goes, I think you have a lot of people following that one. With well over 3,500 views, that is pretty evident. People are watching, they're just not necessarily responding every time you post an update. I posted the beginnings of a '65 Plymouth project on May first. Haven't had a response in almost 2 weeks. I also haven't updated anything in 2 weeks, so it only makes sense. It's just the nature of the beast. Steve -
Kind of the same way I've always thought about it. It never bothered me if someone posted on one of my threads, but I guess if some people take issue with it, I'll try to avoid it from now on. Although, just saying that does smack of political correctness. I think we may already have enough rules on what should or should not be done or said to avoid "offending" someone. Steve

Deaf as well as "dumb" & blind? I guess anyone can get a license to drive! Steve
