1960 Chrysler Imperial Update, 4/18 Starting Over
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in WIP: Model Cars
They Didn't do two tone combos on the Imperials Amere. At least not in '60. But some models did come with the "cove" area on the roof painted a contrasting color rather than stainless steel. I thought about doing that area black along with a slightly darker shade of mauve & black interior ? Ivory might look a little too "washed out". If anything, I think a darker color would be a nicer contrast. Steve -

Finished up the color coats on my '60 Imperial today. I know this type of color is not everyone's cup of tea, but I love these unusual 50s-60s colors. This one is called "Dawn Mauve" & is a correct '60 Imperial color. A sort of pale purplish pink. Hard to get a good photo that shows the color well. Still have to clean the paint off of the "Imperial" scripts & then several days of clear coating, sanding & polishing. Still tossing around whether I want to use aluminum BMF or "Polished Aluminum" Alclad on the roof panels? Steve -

Thanks Rusty. I already have a '59 Imperial & a '59 Fury with the "tire cover" so I thought I'd try something a little more "unique" on this one. I got really lucky on this kit! I picked this up on ebay about a year ago for $75.00. It was a complete, pristine, in the box kit. All of the parts were still on the trees. So this is basically a "brand new" build. Steve -

Thanks Nick. But I think I'll leave it as is. Steve -
1960 Chrysler Imperial Update, 4/18 Starting Over

Well, the concensus seemed to be to go with the trunk moulding, so that's the direction I went. Still needs a little fine tuning, but I think it'll prove to be a good decision. It should make it somewhat unique anyway. This was all done with peices of sprue. The hole in the ornament wasn't planned, the sprue used just happened to be hollow. I may leave it. There's no way I'm going to recreate the tiny gold crown in the center anyway. Steve -

I don't have a '61 Peter, but I built my '59 with the tire cover & was thinking I'd do something a little different this time. So far the concensus seems to be without, but I'll still have to give it some consideration & maybe a little extra research. The "toilet seat" isn't 100% correct as is anyway. There should be a small chrome "handle" on the rear of it which isn't there & the cover needs to be molded into the trunk lid, unlike the '59 which had a chrome ring around the base. So there's work involved either way. Thank you everbody for your suggestions! Steve -
First Completed Build in Over 50 Years - 1961 Falcon Ranchero
StevenGuthmiller replied to Miatatom's topic in Model Cars
Very nice Tom! I would say for not building for 50+ years you did a terrific job! I took a 10 year hiatus at one point & it was a real struggle for me to get back into it also. Now that I'm back, I can't get enough! Keep up the great work! Steve -
1960 Chrysler Imperial Update, 4/18 Starting Over

Hey guys. I'm having a hard time making a decision on this one. 90% of the pics I see of 1960 Imperials have the "toilet seat" spare tire cover. I'm not hugely partial to them, although I did order the correct chrome cap for it. (the kit never had the correct cover, this is a re-pop of the promo peice). Only problem is, without the spare tire cover, the trunk lid should have a chrome spear & handle/ornament. So either I do the tire cover or replicate the standard trunk trim. What do you all think? Steve -
Thanks guys!! I really appreciate the great comments! Can't wait to get started on the next one! Steve

Another nice one Tulio! This one's a bit out of my "genre", (post 1950) but a beautiful build is a beautiful build! Great job!! Steve
-
You & I would get along great Tulio! I've been shying away lately from doing some nice old kits just because they have engines. ('62 Ford Sunliner, '61 Buick Invicta, etc.) I've been kind of enjoying the "instant gratification" that comes with building a curbside kit. I'll build them eventually, but it's kind of nice just concentrating on paint, foil & interior & exterior detailing. (the parts of the build that I really enjoy) I also don't like working with resin. I only go that route if it's impossible to find in styrene. Steve

Thanks guys! Tom, For some reason the convertibles are relatively easy to find, the hard tops are a little tougher. I finally found just a good body & used a convertible for a donor kit. Steve

That's beautiful Marcos!! I love the use of the "Keystone" wheels! You don't see those much anymore. Nice Job!! Steve

My original plan was to move on to a 1959 Mercury Parklane convertible, but I'm a little burnt out on the Fomoco projects after just finishing the '59 & '60 Edsels as well as a '60 Mercury. So I thought I'd give another Mopar the green flag. This kit should be a nice easy build. No restoration on this one. This is an original "pristine" '60 Imperial I picked up a while back & it definately "needs" to be built. Going with a "Dawn Mauve" paint job on this one. Not sure about interior color yet. Wish me luck! Steve -
Thanks guys! Christopher, actually the tires are not from a kit. These are a set of Modelhaus' "#530 late 50s- early 60s Johan promo wide whites". I love Modelhaus tires! I use a lot of them. Saves me from raiding other kits or painting white walls. Although it costs me a few bucks! Steve

Thanks guys. This was a fun build. Steve

No Amere. I use the old "foil before paint" method. I put on all of my primer & color coats, except for the last color coat. Then foil the scripts & other small parts like door & trunk locks, cutting al closely as possible. Then I apply the last color coat. After the paint cures enough to handle, I carefully clean off the paint from the script using the appropriate thinner & one of those small pointed "Q-tips" from Tamiya. I use the thinner very sparingly so as not the damage the paint around the script. Then I just clear coat over it. It's actually a very easy & satisfying technique that I wish I would have known years ago! Steve

Finally finished up the Edsel hardtop build. Pretty much my usual MO. Box stock with a few added scratch built items. This one has had the steering column rebuilt as well as an added horn ring, scratch built interior mirror & antenna. I added pieces of painted clear plastic to the tail & back-up lights to add a little more realism. The colors are not "correct" Edsel colors, but are reasonably close to "Bronze Rose" & "Sahara Beige". Not one of my favorite builds, & a far cry from one of my favorite cars, but I felt like it had historic value. Besides, I needed a '60 to finish the Edsel "trilogy" in my collection. Comments or criticisms are always welcome! Steve

Another beautiful one Tulio! I keep eye-balling my '64 Ford in hopes of building it someday! Unfortunately, there are a probably 30 other projects that take precedence over it. Fantastic Job!! Steve
-
I just love that shade of green Tulio! It just screams early 60s! That's a beautiful car, plain & simple!! Steve

'60 Edsel, Update 7/6 Finished!

Finished up the '60 Edsel Ranger today! When I get a chance to sit down tonight for a while, I'll post some pics "Under Glass". Thanks for all your comments & encouragement everybody! Can't wait to get started on the next one! Hope you all had a great 4th!! Steve -
What a fantastic idea! I never thought I'd see the day! Giving these kids the opportunity to do something with their hands rather than texting or playing video games is brilliant! Steve
-
Nice job Ron!! These Johan '59 Oldsmobiles are getting to be about as rare as they come! It's nice to see one brought back from the dead! The paint is just "glorious"!! Steve

'60 Edsel, Update 7/6 Finished!
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Getting pretty close to finishing up on this build. With any luck, I'll have her done within the next few days. Finished up the interior tonight. Box stock except for the steering column & levers which were scratch built as well as my usual "card stock" floor mats. For some reason, this kit had no horn ring on the steering wheel. I'm not sure if it ever had one but all the photos of the 1:1 I've seen have a horn ring, so I swiped one from an AMT '57 Ford kit. Steve
