1979 Nissan Sunny pickup
Atmobil replied to Atmobil's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Thank you very much for the comments guys Yes, it is right hand drive. In my eyes a sad thing because I could have wanted a left hand drive version. Maybe Hasegawa will release a LHD version in the future. -

This looks fantastic! But I have to ask, the Forest Service logos, where did you get them from? -
I'm not sure as I just like to forget what I pay for a kit as soon as possible but I did buy the Italeri/Tamiya Subaru WRC team combo kit in 2001/2002 (Scania 143 Streamliner truck, raceteamtrailer and Subaru Impreza WRC car in the same kit) for about 1000 norwegian Kroner (about 140$US). I also bought an Airtrax resinkit Mercedes Benz W111 fintail for 1000kroner and I got a 1965 Dodge D100 from Modelhaus last year that is priced at a 100$. I have several kits that I have paid I have paid about 500 kroner (about 70$US) for like the AMT Subaru Brat, Esci 1984 Ford Transit, Revell 1:16 Peterbilt, Revell 1:16 Chevy pickup and probably a quite a few others aswell. But I like to remember the times when I have gotten something cheaper than normally, like when I back in 2005 managed to get the Heller 1:16 Citroen DS from Ebay seller in England for 17£ inluding shipping and the Union (ex Heller) 1:20 Renault 16 for 9$ plus 15$ shipping and one of the first kits that I bought was from a kid that lived on my street (I was about 12 and he was maybe 8), he had gotten a Monogram 40 Ford pickup from his uncle as a present but didn't like the fact that the car was in bits so he sold it to me for 20 kroner (wich today is about 3$). He was really happy because he could go of and buy candy and I was even more happy because I had just bought a kit at a very good price. Normal storeprice for a kit in Norway at the time was 150-200 kroner. I have several times bought kits cheaply on Ebay because the seller had miss spelled the name (Like Cevrolet) or put it under the wrong category (easy to spot if you search in All Categories for Revell 1957 Chevrolet and you get 1 result in Clothing).

In November 2012 I got a car from a fellow member in the Mercedes club in to my workshop. This was a 1979 Mercedes 450SL, in taxigelb (light yellow/beige) with brown interior. Imported from Indiana in 2009 and with 74 000 miles on the clock. I did only small jobs on it, replaced the steeringwheel, fixed a few details on the dash that had come loose and replaced some balljoints. But working on this car inspired me and I already had the old Monogram 450SL (the rallyversion molded in white) and in December 2013 I had time to start on this project. I was first planning on building it straight from the box but I soon changed my mind as the kit is far to incorrect and badly detailed for me to let it be. I had taken lots of pics of the 79 SL I had worked on so I used that as a reference but wanted to go for another color. The kit also depicts and earlier car. I wanted to have the steelwheels with fullcover hubcaps so I bought the standard Monogram 450SL (molded in silver) from a seller on Ebay. The interior need a lot of work, I scratchbuilt doorpockets and armrests/doorpull and dooropener. I also scratchbuilt sunvisors and modifed the arm/bracket for the rearviewmirror. Added instrumentdecals and tried to detailpaint the interior as best as I could. I also made sidewindows from clear plastic (the type that is used in packaging). The body also need quite a lot of work. The rear end under the rear bumper is straight and square like a box on the kit but on the 1:1 cars the body curves in and under. To make it look a bit like this I cut off the bodyparts from where the bumper is attached and down. I split it so that I had left and right sidepanels and rear apron and the I sanded and cut the panels at an angle so that when I fitted it back together the body narrows and curves a little in under the rearbumper. Not 100% correct as I had now way of making the radius that is there on the 1:1 cars but good enough for the model. I also sanded of the 450SL badge and filled in some bad sinkmarks on the trunklid. Also on the rear end but on the floorpan part I made my own exhausttips as the real cars have two pipes and the model only has one and that looked bad. The front end was also worked on. The frontbumper and grille is molded as one part. I sawed the parts away from eachother. The grille was sanded down on the backside to make it thinner as it is way to thick. I also cut out the plastic behind the headlights and made my own reflectors from thin aluminium. I also added a small chromestrip over the headlights like the realcars with chromefoil. The kit has no outside mirrors in it so I found some in my scrapbox. Think they are from a Tamiya rally car but not sure. Sadly I managed to loose the right one (this is the reason I put german plates on it as in Germany, right hand side mirrors where not compulsory by law before sometime in the 1980s) so only the lefthand mirror is there. The tires that come with the kit are far to small but the rims are ok. I did have to look around a bit to find tires that matched the size of the rim and what was need for the car but I found some from a AMT kit. They are Firestone Super Sports so not correct for a German 70s car but it looks much better. I painted the body in a correct for its time Mercedes color code 904 Dunkelblau Mitternachtsblau (Midnight Blue Dark Blue) and tried as best as I could to mix and match paint (and flocking) to the interior colors of the time. I also added chromefoil behind the taillights and on the bottom of the trunklid to simulate the small strip of chrome that is on the real cars. The bumpers also got foil on them as the chrome from the kit was not very good any more. The sidetrim is also foiled and painted with black in the center. The hubcaps are detailpainted and given a dark wash to give them some depth. The chassis was painted satinblack and I did only some simple detailpainting on the exhaust, engine and gearbox as the chassisdetails are not very good. Got no picture of that.

Stunning looking model you got there. I have some 1:16 early cars from Academy (1901 De Dion Button and 1886 Daimler), I don't know if they are related in any way but I think the kits I got need the same work you have done on this.

IMC model car promo poster!
Atmobil replied to 82coupe's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Really cool posters. I got the IMC Psychedelic Surf Buggy and that sure is psychedelic. Instructions are on a flower and the decalsheet with those strange posters are really cool. I guess it's a very good timecapsule of what things where like back then. My kit also has a little coupon in it that you can send back to get a kit of the new lunar lander that will soon land on the moon. So I guess this was before the small step -
I have just checked my kits, I got the 78 step side in 4x4 and the 2wd version and the later Ground Shaker version and the fenderflares in the groundshaker fit to that cab so they must have altered them aswell. I don't have the sodbuster so I don't know about that one.

Thank you very much guys I don't know how familiar you are with the Class 11 but this is one of the classes in the baja races. It is for beetles and they have to be almost stock. Only slightly raised suspension and bigger wheels as modifications are allowed. Must be with bumpers and stock engine. Here is an example of a 1:1 Class 11

VW Golf Pickup
Atmobil replied to dptydawg's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That's really cool. I guess thats about what a 1:1 version of the Caddy would look like if they had made one of the mkII golf. I think they only made a Caddy from the mk1. Great work -
Ford C900 JPS team truck
Atmobil replied to Atmobil's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thank you very much, yes I will post a thread on the trailer when I'm in the mood to start on that again. The trailer was part of a stash of models I bought from a guy that had stopped modelling. It was only the chassis and he had made new sides for it from balsa, problem was the balsa was 2mm thick. I decided to make a team trailer out of it by making closed sides, front and opening tailgate from sheet styrene. The last I did was start on the interior work, made some steps for a door that is going on the lefthand side. But lost the glow for it then, will pick it up sometime in the future. Will offcourse be black and gold with JPS logos on the side. Luckily JPS logos are readily available on Ebay in many scales. The ones I got are for 1:10 and 1:18 plus 1:20. -
