Ooh..thanks--I've never been to Jim's site...that's probably the first place I will start!
-
Looks like I was too late to the party on this kit. Does anybody have any leads online, etc. where I could find one?
-
Been working on my snap-GTO over the last few days. Cleaned up the paint job and have started in on the BMF. I've been learning a lot from the boards, and have been working on the headlights, dash and more. Long way to go, but still having fun! Really appreciate everyone's knowledge on this....it's been a super help!

Sounds great....I'll probably end up doing that....I had hesitated before in getting the Christine model because of the red and knowing I might have to take that route, but hard to turn down a $10 kit..... :D
-
Yeah, but I'm thinking that I probably shouldn't have rushed things....and put another coat of primer on....but being the type-A that I am

I always seem to putter away with two projects at once. In this shot, I've started in earnest on the infamous snap-GTO kit and the AMT Christine model, which I'm trying to turn into a plain '58 Belvedere. I used the same color paint for both, but as you can see the molded red of the AMT kit changed things just a bit. I'll try to post updates as I get time, but here's links to my reference (1:1) shots: GTO: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/358036239100312140/ Belvedere: http://www.classycars.org/Plymouth.1958.Belvedere.661.html

Box art and your decision?
Tony_B replied to Petetrucker07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Interesting topic....over on FB, I've just joined a box-art group-->lotta neat stuff I have to admit, and I'm a sucker for the "shiny, ohhh, new" stuff! (I'm a computer nerd after all...). Unfortunately, box art will always get me. I've been looking at some of the AMT reissues (late-60's box art) and it just turns me off from buying the kit....I can't help it... <shrug> -
How can one bend time?
Tony_B replied to The Creative Explorer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll echo most of what is said above, but my method is two things: 1. Get up 30 min. earlier in the am. 2. Try not to rush, but work in smaller bits. One day, I'll glue the motor together. Next, I'll sand it, and the third day I'll prime it/paint it. It's hard for me to be this way, because I really do want to work on the model, but it does give me something to look forward to.... -
What kits are you hunting for 2015
Tony_B replied to Twokidsnosleep's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The new AMT "Heavy Chevy" looks like something I'll be picking up..... -
Good stuff...thanks everyone! I'm heading out to do some errands and will stop by and pick up a can. I *did* get a bit better look by taking a soft cloth and rubbing out the pieces for a while however.....but I think for my next stuff, will try the spray can instead of a brush....

Thanks everyone--good tips! I will save for an airbrush...and in the meantime will try the techniques you mentioned....fingers crossed! If not, back into the oven cleaner for another bath! :D

Michael's - what's your opinion?
Tony_B replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wonder if it's on a per-store basis? I know I have access to two different stores, and I've picked up a few things, but like some of the other folks, the selection was really small and hit or miss. I do like the coupons...just picked up the AMT Christine model for $10 as the box was damaged and had a coupon. Mostly though I try to hit the local hobby shop here....they do RC racing, but have about a 30' shelving section of models. I went to Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago as well...but they didn't have too much either. I've been dreaming a lot over a modelroundup.....but with Christmas, the old funding situation is a bit sketchy! -
Morning everyone, OK...what am I doing wrong? I've got the AMT '51 Chevy kit and I sprung for the expensive Spaz paint (including the gloss black sealer). However, my chrome looks just plain old silver. Was it because I brushed it on? (don't have airbrush yet....) ?????

Nice details on the interior...that's what I am trying to learn about for myself...and the chassis is awesome!

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I'm pretty much having 1970 as my cut-off date. (Maybe it's because I can actually remember the early 70's cars). We had a fire-engine red Gremlin.....I've been tempted to try to recreate it, but the jury is still out!

Welcome from across the pond here in Ohio....I'm a new guy myself, but just wanted to say hello. Shed sounds neat...I'm stuck using the kitchen table!

Morning everyone! I meant to respond last night, but as usual over the holidays, been battling a cold! Neat YouTube stuff....I spent hours this morning on that...it's funny, lots of younger folks today take all this stuff for granted...I remember hoarding old Hot Rod magazines that I would find a flea markets, figuring I would never see them again....and now I can even find them on the net. Good stuff. Thanks for the welcome Ace, everyone. I've been trying to soak everything up that I can off these forums...appreciate it! Speaking of this, has anyone seen this: http://www.themodelcarmuseum.org/index.html. Looks like they are digitizing a bunch of magazines...maybe they will make these accessible...

It really is amazing...I just wish Google would digitize Car Life....I've been looking for that one for a looooonnnggg time....

Around the Columbus area.....I've found a good hobby shop in town that always has good kits: Tom Thumb Hobbies. I always try to buy local if possible...sometimes I can't, but I try... See ya....

Hi all, I wasn't sure whether to post a new thread or tag-along with someone else's....but here goes! -------------- Recently back into the hobby and given those @$@$# Michael's coupons that I keep stealing from the Sunday paper, I've been slowly building up my stash anew. Mostly late 50's and early 60's has the most interest for me, so I've been tackling the infamous AMT 62 Buick Electra and the '57 Ford. I know on the forums here there's lots of opinons on the Buick kit, but it's been good so far. On this one, I primed the body and tried to go with the early 60's tan (beige?) GM color. It orange-peeled up on me, so I've sanded it back down and just waiting for it to warm up here in Ohio before I try again. For the chrome trim on the back I used a silver sharpie and it came out well, but I'm not sure about the shadows in the trim itself...I'm thinking a black wash (if I can pull it off) to get that illusion of depth? I've still got to clean the trim up around the windshield as well.. The second one is the 57 Ford and I've tried to two-tone it. I'm still building my skills, but I'm hoping the planned-for BMF trim on the side can hide my mistakes! Hahahaha... I've got about 5 other kits I'm working on here and there (can you tell I'm type A?) but these are my current two I've been working with in the last week. For now, I'll just try to absorb everyone's knowledge and try to learn as much as possible. You guys are really good with your skills, so I'm taking notes as fast as I can. My fear is the dash(es) will be my downfall however.... --Tony

Morning all, Given I'm new to the forums, etc. maybe this has been discussed already, but being a librarian and nerd by trade, I'm always fascinated by the 1:1 information on the models I've started building. Google Books, given that they've digitized ALL of the Popular Mechanics magazines has now become my primary resource tool. Just ran across this a few moments ago: (apologies for the ugly url) https://books.google.com/books?id=g9QDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA202&dq=%22AMT%22%20model%20cars%20%22popular%20mechanics%22&pg=PA88#v=onepage&q=%22AMT%22%20model%20cars%20%22popular%20mechanics%22&f=false Now if I could just find a model and skills to be able to pull this off!!! By the way, if you check the article out, I thought it was interesting that AMT had a research division....but maybe that was just because of their involvement with the manufacturers back then? --Tony PS: For you Chevy fans, check this one out: http://images.google.com/hosted/life/70c055dab06086d6.html

Morning....thanks everyone! These are some great ideas! I'll give the side trim a whirl with the aluminum paint and BMF. Now my only problem is to try to finish one kit before I find another one! Hahaha! I've got some other works in progress...will post them in the other works in progress thread.... See ya....

Hello everyone! What a great forum. I've been lurking around for a few weeks. Computer nerd and librarian by trade, but needing a new hobby different from computers. Started back in with car stuff...looks like there's a renaissance of great stuff! Working on about 6 different ones now...I've started in on a snap GTO for tonight, a Christmas present....not a bad kit for me...easy stuff to start with. Going with SkyLine-like blue (I know it's a little lighter than stock) and the metallic blue interior. I'm hoping to use the same color for my '58 Christine model (Anybody know if I use blue for the body, should I use BMF for the side trim or just paint it white?) (I'm no purist...) Just thought I better join up and say Hi.... See ya.... --Tony
